2020 ACF Fall at U. of South Carolina (10/17/2020)

Post by Ethnic history of the Vilnius region »

I am pleased to announce that the Southeast site of 2020 ACF Fall will be held at the University of South Carolina on Saturday, October 17, 2020.

The tournament will take place virtually on Discord. The opening meeting will begin at 8:30 EDT and gameplay will begin at 9:00 EDT. I,
Eric Douglass, will be the tournament director. Please direct any questions about this site to ericd25 at hotmail.com.

Eligibility
In general, teams where players are all attending the same school and all taking at least one class for credit during the 2020–2021 school year are eligible to play 2020 ACF Fall. ACF’s full eligibility rules are available here. Questions about eligibility should be directed to [email protected].

Rules
This tournament will follow ACF’s official gameplay rules. There will be some modifications to the standard ruleset to account for the differences between online and in-person gameplay which will be published at a later date.

Registration
Fill out the central 2020 ACF Fall registration form with all relevant information. The form is here. The field for each site can be found here.

If possible, teams should register for the site that is geographically closest to them and/or is in the region they would normally attend. The field cap for all sites is 18, after which teams will be placed on a waitlist or potentially assigned to another site. Please register by October 12, 2020.
Fees
  • Base fee: $120
  • New to quizbowl discount: –$80
  • Shorthanded discount (1–2 players): –$60
  • Staffers: –$25 per staffer with a functional laptop. Staffers must register with ACF in advance by filling out this form.
The new to quizbowl discount is intended for schools that did not send a team to any regular collegiate academic tournament (exclusively Novice tournaments do not count) since September 2019, and have no one on the team(s) claiming this discount who played those tournaments for another school.

Packet Submission
Unlike past iterations of the set, no teams are required to submit questions in order to play the tournament. However, ACF still needs high-quality, half-packet submissions from teams to complete the set.

Below is the submission schedule for ACF Fall. All deadlines are at 11:59 p.m. PDT. The maximum packet discounts have increased since last year; furthermore, all submitting teams are eligible for an additional −$20 quality discount if their questions are particularly polished and usable, up to a maximum discount of −$60. Teams may submit a maximum of one half-packet.
  • August 23, 2020: –$50
  • August 30, 2020: –$40
  • September 6, 2020: –$30
  • September 13, 2020: -$20
  • September 20, 2020: -$10
If you would like to submit a half-packet, fill out this form. ACF will respond with a half-packet template specifying which categories you are assigned to write.

Each submission consists of 12 tossups and 12 bonuses. Before writing, please review ACF's packet submission guidelines and stick to the format provided. Answers should generally emphasize playability over creativity – aim for creative and interesting clues with straightforward answerlines. These 5 model tossups reflect the difficulty and style to aim for. When finished, submit your half-packet by emailing it to [email protected].

In another change from last year, your assigned half-packet will ask for questions from more specific categories within the distribution. For instance, instead of being assigned an “American Literature” tossup, you might be asked to write a question on a 20th-century American poem, or an Economics bonus instead of “Social Science/Philosophy.” This should reduce redundancy in submissions and maximize the number of submitted questions we can use, without being too constraining. The submission form offers space to indicate your writing interests in each category, which we will do our best to accommodate.

Congratulations to Vanderbilt A (Aidan Fein, Gideon Kburubu, Liam Thompson, and Keegan Fong) for winning ACF Fall Southeast. Florida A (Anthony Delgado, Mateo Javier Acosta, Leah Honsiger, and John Nienajadlo) finished second. Vanderbilt won 2 straight games in an advantaged final to take the overall title, and the DII title as well.

I had a blast directing the tournament and would like to thank the competitors for their patience and recognize them all for a high level of play. I would also like to thank our fantastic staff. Jonathen Settle in particular was a tremendous help. Dr. Eric Mukherjee also helped a lot in the control room and is a great reader. And all of our other readers and scorekeepers were excellent. In no particular order, Bryn Douglass, Ben Ingram, Patrick Cleary, Glenna Barlow, Atifah Jatoi, Michael Ponce, Casey Bindas, Cal Relish, Lexi Anunson, Shash Comandur, Kavya Patchipulusu, Louis Tedeschi, Justin Kennedy, Ren Steneman, Taylor Harvey, Jonathan Caldwell, and Nytavious Bennett. You all were great.

Finally, thanks to the question writers, Karan Gurazada for the really helpful Discord bot, and ACF. Margaret Tebbe in particular was a huge help throughout the whole process. I played in the very first ACF Fall in 2001, and it was really cool to direct a small corner of the 20th iteration of this great tournament.

I hope everyone had a good time. Here are the prelim stats. Playoff stats will be ready soon and will be posted directly.
