2020 ACF Fall at Stony Brook University (10/17/2020)

Post by JA01 »

I am pleased to announce that the Northeast overflow Mid-Atlantic and Northeast site of 2020 ACF Fall will be held at Discord on Saturday, October 17, 2020.

The tournament will take place virtually on Discord. The opening meeting will begin at 9:45 am ET and gameplay will begin at 10 am ET. I, Jade Anderson, and Michael Kearney will be the tournament directors. Please direct any questions about this site to jade [dot] anderson [at] stonybrook [dot] edu

Eligibility
In general, teams where players are all attending the same school and all taking at least one class for credit during the 2020–2021 school year are eligible to play 2020 ACF Fall. ACF’s full eligibility rules are available here. Questions about eligibility should be directed to [email protected].

Rules
This tournament will follow ACF’s official gameplay rules. There will be some modifications to the standard ruleset to account for the differences between online and in-person gameplay which will be published at a later date.

Registration
Fill out the central 2020 ACF Fall registration form with all relevant information. The form is here. The field for each site can be found here.

If possible, teams should register for the site that is geographically closest to them and/or is in the region they would normally attend. The field cap for all sites is 18, after which teams will be placed on a waitlist or potentially assigned to another site. Please register by October 12, 2020.
Fees
  • Base fee: $120
  • New to quizbowl discount: –$80
  • Shorthanded discount (1–2 players): –$60
  • Staffers: –$25 per staffer with a functional laptop. Staffers must register with ACF in advance by filling out this form .

The new to quizbowl discount is intended for schools that did not send a team to any regular collegiate academic tournament (exclusively Novice tournaments do not count) since September 2019, and have no one on the team(s) claiming this discount who played those tournaments for another school.

    Packet Submission
Unlike past iterations of the set, no teams are required to submit questions in order to play the tournament. However, ACF still needs high-quality, half-packet submissions from teams to complete the set.

Below is the submission schedule for ACF Fall. All deadlines are at 11:59 p.m. PDT. The maximum packet discounts have increased since last year; furthermore, all submitting teams are eligible for an additional −$20 quality discount if their questions are particularly polished and usable, up to a maximum discount of −$60. Teams may submit a maximum of one half-packet.
    • August 23, 2020: –$50
    • August 30, 2020: –$40
    • September 6, 2020: –$30
    • September 13, 2020: -$20
    • September 20, 2020: -$10
If you would like to submit a half-packet, fill out this form. ACF will respond with a half-packet template specifying which categories you are assigned to write.

Each submission consists of 12 tossups and 12 bonuses. Before writing, please review ACF's packet submission guidelines and stick to the format provided. Answers should generally emphasize playability over creativity – aim for creative and interesting clues with straightforward answerlines. These 5 model tossups reflect the difficulty and style to aim for. When finished, submit your half-packet by emailing it to [email protected].

In another change from last year, your assigned half-packet will ask for questions from more specific categories within the distribution. For instance, instead of being assigned an “American Literature” tossup, you might be asked to write a question on a 20th-century American poem, or an Economics bonus instead of “Social Science/Philosophy.” This should reduce redundancy in submissions and maximize the number of submitted questions we can use, without being too constraining. The submission form offers space to indicate your writing interests in each category, which we will do our best to accommodate.

Since the UNC site is already at 19 teams, does that mean one of those teams and any additional teams from the Lower Mid-Atlantic that want to play ACF Fall will be moved to play at this site? How are you going to decide who plays at which site?

Sorry for the late reply. At this time, I am not exactly sure how this will be decided, but I will update with any information from ACF

I'm pleased to be working with Jade and Stony Brook to host their first ACF Fall. My role will be to provide an experienced eye on matters of scheduling and policy, especially as online quizbowl is concerned. I'll be co-TDing on the day and you may feel free to "cc" me ([email protected]) on emails to Jade.

I apologize for the slow response. I'm going to reassign teams on a voluntary basis if at all possible--I just asked Victor to email all of the teams currently signed up for the UNC site to see if anyone is willing to move. Depending on the number of teams being fielded by whichever school is willing to move, they'll either be reassigned to either the USC or Stony Brook site. Any additional Lower Mid-Atlantic teams can choose to be placed on a waitlist for the UNC site or register for the Stony Brook site.

Thank you to all who participated in this tournament! We hope you all enjoyed! Thank you to all the staffers who put on a great tournament! Also special thanks to Michael Kearney for co-TDing and making sure everything ran smoothly.

Congratulations to Brandeis A for coming in 1st place! Also congratulations to Williams A and UNC A who came in 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Stats can be found here https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/6569/

It would also be greatly appreciated if participants could complete this quick survey so we can gauge the general consensus on how the tournament went. https://forms.gle/eKpHpD4ABXvn35gY8

Again, thank you so much to everyone who took part!
