IKEA Discord Open Mirrors (9/19 and 9/27) - SIGNUPS OPEN

Post by naan/steak-holding toll »

This is an official announcement for the IKEA Open Discord mirrors. These are not "playtest" mirrors - we will be providing a full tournament which is completely edited and proofread, and which has had questions playtested by experienced outsiders.

This tournament is roughly comparable in difficulty to Terrapin 2016 and DRAGOON 2013, roughly between traditional iterations of EFT and more recent iterations of ACF Regionals in difficulty. For more details about the IKEA set, please visit the original post of this thread.

All players who are not currently enrolled in a degree-granting university program (as defined by ACF) may play this tournament, with whoever they choose. High schoolers wishing to play this question set on a chimera team should play this tournament; if they play a college regional mirror, they must play with their school team. Active collegiate players may petition for an exception to this policy by PMing me on this forum or emailing me (william dot t dot alston at gmail dot com).

As with the planned regional mirrors, the fee for the open tournaments will be $80 per team. There will be no exceptions to this amount for open teams. Staff will be provided in-house. All payments for these open tournaments must be made electronically prior to the tournament; options for PayPal and Venmo will be provided in the pre-tournament email, along with our tournament's Code of Conduct, which all teams will be required to sign.

There will be two online open mirrors of this event.
  • The version of this tournament WITH BOUNCEBACKS will be played on 9/19 and will start at 10AM EST, to accommodate the anticipated increased length of the tournament.
  • The version of this tournament WITHOUT BOUNCEBACKS will be played on 9/27 and will start at 11:30AM EST, to better accommodate West Coast players who prefer a later start time.
You can sign up for either of these tournaments using this spreadsheet. You may mark yourself as a free agent for both, but do not put yourself on a finalized team for a tournament on more than one day, for obvious reasons. Registration will be confirmed via email.

The final field cap for each of these tournaments is 16 teams. A separate British open mirror of this tournament will be planned, which will use British staff and pay them. British players are more than welcome to play either of these mirrors as well.

A note that this is not a "playtest" mirror has been added to the initial post. This tournament will have 14 complete packets which are fully edited, powermarked, and proofread, and which have undergone initial playtesting with experienced outsiders. Jordan Brownstein and Eric Mukherjee in particular are playtesting questions and providing feedback and I owe them much gratitude.

Just want to confirm that the 9/27 date is intentionally on a Sunday.

Correct. It had higher poll response numbers than the Saturday for that weekend.

Hi folks - this tournament is four days away!

We're planning on capping the field for the first mirror at 12 teams. If there are 10 teams, we will offer a 9 game round robin. If there are 12 teams, we will split into two brackets of 6, followed by a split of 3-3 into round-robin playoffs (prelims games will not be counted towards playoffs record in this scenario.

If you are a free agent without a team, you will be assigned. If you would like to be assigned to a team, please put information about your specialties in the sign-up sheet so I can pair people up with appropriate teammates.

We're really excited about the tournament and look forward to presenting it to this excellent field!

Aayush, Alex Li, and I are still looking for a fourth for our team. Not looking for subjects to cover in particular.

Any additional details about how you're going to handle bouncebacks online?

In an in-person tournament you can confer with your teammates while the other team is answering. This is hard to do online without using a separate channel for your team. I'd personally be in favor of having that go on, but that does mean you're having people typing during live questions.

At the very least I'd encourage players to have their guesses already typed out for the bounceback. It's a very inefficient use of time to sit there for 8 seconds with a guess before writing that guess out.

Otherwise I'm guessing you're going to need to give at least 5 seconds for accepting bounceback answers.

This is a fair point. I will send out information regarding bouncebacks in the tournament email.

Also, we are looking for a 12th team to play this event, so we don't have to give any byes and can run 10 rounds instead of 11.

The bouncebacks were fun to implement for once, but perhaps predictably ended up making this tournament take too long. We will not be using them at mirrors with large fields; we may consider them for small fields as player feedback suggests that it helped people stay engage during online events. We'll also be adjusting the set difficulty down slightly to better hit the target difficulty level.

Stats are up! Find them here. The Carlson/Hothem/Droge/Rao-Pothraju team won the tournament in a thrilling two-game finals series against the Bentley/Magin/Nussbaum/Lasker team which came down to the last tossup.

Registered teams have been invited to the Discord; free agents have been assigned to teams and will be shortly invited as well.

With 8 teams currently in the field, I'm going to close the field barring enough sign-ups to get us to 10 teams. We'll plan on a round-robin prelims, followed by a 4/4 split into playoffs, with prelims records carrying over into playoffs.

We found that 8 second bonus timing and good moderation, with no bouncebacks, allowed us to finish finals games in 30-40 minutes last week, so we'll be going with that.

Congrats to all the teams who played today's IKEA Open!

Bollinger/Carson/Wang/Thompson defeated Raje/Keyal/Nguyen/Chen in the first game of an advantaged final 490-175 to win the tournament.

Stats are here: https://hsquizbowl.org/db/tournaments/6601/

Thanks to all of our staffers for making this possible!
