Let's Remember Some Guys II: Let's Remember Some More Guys (HSNCT)

Post by theMoMA »

Let's remember some more guys.

What is a "guy"?

Each tossup will be on a single athlete. The key is that the athletes must be in the vein of Deadspin's "guys": somewhat memorable, but not particularly dominant or otherwise notable. The main criterion is whether, after hearing the tossup, the players will go "oh, yeah, I remember that guy." (It might help to pick guys you actually remember.) Anyone too obscure for that isn't a guy. Anyone whose existence you don't need to be reminded of isn't a guy. Some examples of guys: Rick Ankiel, Smush Parker, Jason Campbell, and Anthony Kim. Examples of not guys: Derek Jeter, Kobe Bryant, Tom Brady, and Roger Federer.

Check out last year's packets for examples of how this tournament looks.

When did "guys" play?

Because we're actually trying to remember guys, try not to pick players whose careers ended before 1998 or so, or players whose careers are still in progress, although there is some leeway here. If you want to include some historical guys in your "other" category, that's fine, but the main MLB/NBA/NFL tossups should be on guys who retired sometime between 1998 and 2019 (or who are functionally retired).

How should tossups look?

The tossups should be no shorter than 4.5 lines and no longer than 6 (1" margins, 10-point Times New Roman). Clues should focus on memorable career events or off-the-field incidents. Particularly helpful clues--for instance, clues about interactions with teammates, trades, etc.--will provide useful context about the teams a player was on or the years in which they played. Try to keep the clues interesting and not almanacky.

What's the distribution?

Same as ever:

3 MLB
3 NBA
3 NFL
3 "other" (NHL, college sports, tennis, golf, soccer, Olympics, WNBA, historical guys, etc.)

Note that some of your guys can, in fact, be ladies.

Is there any cost to this?

No, but the true cost is in not remembering. So if you're planning to play, you should try to write a packet. Writing longer or multiple packets is encouraged.

When should I be done with my many excellent packets?

We will again be remembering guys at HSNCT, but we'll make the packets available (no charge) to people who want to play at NSC or elsewhere. If you won't be at HSNCT but are still planning to write a packet, email packets to [email protected] when you're done. If you'll be there, you can read your packet off your own device and send it to me after so I can make sure all of the guys are in the archive where they can be remembered.

Is this tournament an official function of NAQT or the NAQT national championship, or is it sponsored, endorsed, or organized by NAQT?

No.

Scott enjoys hunting and is a firearms enthusiast. He is a supporter of greater personal responsibility and smaller government.[21]

If last year is any indication, *very late at night*. And then randomly on Sunday.

The event will probably take place later on Saturday night. How late will depend upon the other side events, the people playing them, and whether those people are also planning to play this. If you're interested in remembering guys, please fill out the survey linked below:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... sp=sf_link

If you've written a packet, please also fill out the survey (which has a question on that subject) so that I know roughly how many people are going to want to read.

It looks like we'll have about 9 packets, some of which might be a little longer than 12 questions. Several people are playing META, and a couple are playing Landscape/GOLBEZ, which all appear to be scheduled to begin at ~8:30pm Saturday. I'm guessing 11:30 is an optimistic start time and midnight is a little more realistic.

If you're interested in playing but haven't filled out the form yet, please do so today: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIp ... sp=sf_link

I'll use the form responses to email participants about the room and start time, in addition to posting them in this thread.

Please start heading to M105 beginning at 11:15 and we'll start reading shortly after. If you can't make it until later, come when you can.

Just 1-2 short days ago, we convened in a small conference room and heard 180 questions on guys. Most of the guys were remembered. It is fitting that on this day, Memorial Day, we continue to remember. We should all be proud.

Scoring by PPG (points per guy):

1.76: Tejas
1.55: Naveed
1.08: Andrew
0.78: Mike S.
0.72: Mike C.
0.65: Gabe
0.44: Neil
0.44: Dylan
0.33: Harris
0.30: Jacob
0.30: Sam
0.22: Delano
0.22: Rohin
0.20: Matt B.
0.20: Aidan
0.17: Carsten
0.15: Zach
0.15: Eric C.
0.08: Blake
0.06: Eric D.

Tejas remained the consummate guy rememberer, with 30 of 170 guys remembered. This year's packet set was a bit harder than last year's, with conversion of only 152 of 180 possible guys. No doubt we must all strive to do better in the years to come.

Hey everyone,

As soon as I get all the packets together, I'm going to send them out so the set can be played at Purdue's trash event this summer. (Anyone else who wants to host a mirror or informal reading this summer is welcome to do so free of charge.) I'm not going to create a discussion forum for this event, because that seems excessive, so possible players should be honorable and not read further in this thread in case there is any discussion of the questions.

If anyone who's not planning to play the set would like it, just send me an email. (I haven't gotten all of the packets yet, so it might be a few days before I get back to you.) I ask that anyone who receives the set and wants to forward it to someone else confirm that the person is not going to be playing at Purdue before doing so. I'll upload the packets after mirrors conclude.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, I think events like this in some way are some of the purest form of quizbowl. No buzzers, no sleep, people sitting around a room from midnight to 1 AM, trying to answer increasingly harder and more obscure questions.

I'd like to echo this statement. This set was a lot of fun to play and I hope this set can continue in future years.

I'd be happy to read for this at PACE if there is significant interest. Last year, we sat around in a common area of the hotel and had a casual reading. Depending on how many are interested, we could easily do something like that again.

I sent the set to Harris in case anyone wants to play at NSC. I'm glad people like the event and definitely plan to keep organizing it in the future.

So I'd prefer this to be Friday night after the Toronto/Golden State game. I'm going to try to go watch it at a local bar or restaurant and it'd be great if other sports fans also took this chance to watch the game. Optimistically, this could start at 11:30 or midnight on Friday at the hotel (location TBD.) Please email me if interested. I'm committed to running this even if it's only a handful of people, but I need to know there is an audience.

Alternatively, it could be ran Saturday night, but I am not sure what exactly is the side event schedule and people's availability is up in the air.

I hope to see some people at PACE who want to play this! It's a lot of fun.

I have yet to hear back from anyone on this, so at this time, the PACE reading will not take place. Contact me ASAP if you are still interested in playing.
