Geography Monstrosity IX — May 26, Atlanta
Geography Monstrosity IX — May 26, Atlanta
The all-geography HSNCT side event will be returning for a ninth consecutive year, in its usual timeslot (10 p.m. to midnight, Friday, May 26, after the conclusion of HSNCT scrimmages). Raynell Cooper and I will be editing this year's set jointly. Would anybody planning to attend HSNCT be interested in directing the tournament? Shoot me a PM! I'll be chaperoning a high school team and think it best to keep my schedule free.
1) Packet submission is optional (but encouraged). Please let me and Raynell know if you would like to write questions for this event (partial packets and even isolated questions are OK). Please submit all questions to us by 5 p.m. EST on Wednesday, the 24th so we have time to edit and power-mark them and compile the packets. Send inquiries and question submissions to both g.brisontrezise at gmail and rchammer586 at gmail.
2) This year's edition of GM will again feature bonuses; each packet will be 10/10.
Distribution:
2/2 North America
1/1 Latin America and the Caribbean
2/2 Europe
1/1 Asia
1/1 Africa
3/3 your choice (including: Australia/Oceania/Antarctica, minor islands, common links, fictional geography, exo- and astro-geography, and/or real social science that actual geographers study)
Once I confirm a TD, location, and registration procedure, I'll share those details here. I'd like to continue running GM as a team tournament, so while we'll do our best to accommodate free agents, it'd be helpful if you registered as a three- or foursome.

Hello everyone! I will be the tournament director for this event! :) Details concerning schedules and meeting places will be forthcoming, but for now feel free to figure out teams using this Google spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing. You can also use this spreadsheet to tell everyone you're a free agent and that you want to help staff (and please feel free :) We can always use staff as quizbowl people know :| ) Thanks so much and remember: Geography rules! :)

Thanks to Jeff for volunteering to TD! A few notes:
-- This tournament is free to play
-- You may still play if you contribute questions, though you'll obviously be expected to refrain from answering any questions you wrote
-- Please submit questions! Full packets preferred; partial packets welcome

A little over a week now until this happens! Please consider signing up to play or staff! We really need staff to make this work because, well, I can't read for two rooms at once obviously (I wish ).

While I'd like to play this, if there's a need for staffers (as it currently seems) I'll gladly do so.

Re: Geography Monstrosity IX — May 26, Atlanta
Hi everyone,
With just 2 days until the tournament (!!!!!), here are some reminders:
1. Because of the number of packets that Gabe told me he's planning to have, I will cut the team limit off at 4. Therefore, free agents feel free to contact people on one of the existing 4 teams to join their team.
2. At around 9:50 PM or so (in other words, right after scrimmages end), we will meet in front of the Imperial Ballroom Registration Desk (in other words, where scrimmages are being organized). From there, we'll find two nearby rooms to use for the tournament. Make sure to get there on time so we can start shortly and you can get a good night's sleep hopefully for the tournament tomorrow!
Enjoy!

I'm not one to complain about free packets, but I think that it would be better for everyone in the future if this were announced a little bit farther in advance so that people had more time to contribute questions and so that we got more than thirty tossups to play.

I am pleased to report that the team of The Fast and the Furious: Longshore Drift (Jake Sundberg, Jakob Myers, Pranav Sivakumar, Beck Duggleby, Charles Hang, Luke Tierney, Nick Rommel) won the tournament with a 3-0 record! Congratulations to everyone who competed and thanks once again to Gabe and Raynell for editing what sure was a very entertaining if not hard set. Stats will be forthcoming shortly (as in at least by tomorrow afternoon and most likely this evening).

Aside from the obvious repeat issues (and there were, like, two), this was a very challenging and very fun set. Thanks to the editors for putting this together!
I also agree that this should be announced further in advance in future in order to perhaps induce more participants to submit questions.

Re: Geography Monstrosity IX — May 26, Atlanta
Hi all,
I wanted to publicly thank Jeff X. for directing this event, and Vasa, Jeff H., Jasper and Raynell for contributing questions. I hope all who played it found the experience fun and worthwhile; big ups to Longshore Drift! Raynell and I had a tight window in which to edit the questions, which may have been apparent from the repeats. In reviewing the packets, I see McMurdo Station was thrice an answerline. My bad!
I posted the announcement late — rather than never — because I think GM is a valuable HSNCT tradition, one worth sustaining. Jeff H. has, quite reasonably, not had as much time to devote to the event in recent years, so I took up the torch. If anyone reading this has an abiding interest in geography and would be interested in stewarding GM10, let me know :)
