McMaster University is pleased to announce that we are hosting a mirror of Terrapin XXIX on Saturday, November 26th, 2016. The tournament will likely be held in the McMaster University Student Centre (MUSC). We are planning to start at 9:00am so try to arrive for 8:30am so we can start in a timely fashion.

Terrapin is a set written by members of the University of Maryland quizbowl team; more details about the set can be found here.

Cost
$120 per team (Minimum Fee: $50/team)

Discounts
-$5 per set of working buzzers
-$10 per moderator
-$10 per 321.87 km (or 200 miles) traveled one way from your school to McMaster University
-$20 shorthand discount (per player)

Please register by emailing us at [email protected] with pertinent information such as number of buzzer sets / staff members you (at least tentatively) plan to bring - you can let us know if things change later.

Thanks, and we hope to see you here!

I'll be there, likely playing with the UofT squad. Hopefully we get a good turnout for this!

Currently, even though we have received some informal interest, no school has officially signed up as of today.

Terrapin is a closed tournament.
Terrapin is a closed tournament, but (with approval from those at the University of Maryland) we plan to allow some exceptions. These exceptions will include (but are not limited to): individuals in a post-secondary institution who are interested in attending but unable to field a team may play with their closest competing school; those who are not currently enrolled but plan to be in the near future (i.e. by the next school year) can play with their previous / expected institution. If you have any questions regarding your eligibility, please contact us and we will try to give you an answer as soon as possible.

EDIT: Just talked to a University of Maryland representative. The exception system is now confirmed.

Any other interest in this? Or is it going to be a 3-team death spiral quadruple round robin?

Ya, most likely a 4-team quadruple round robin (unless teams prefer a triple instead).

Copy of the email I sent out to participating teams.
Hello everyone, and thanks for participating in Terrapin XXIX @ McMaster this year! Below are just a few housekeeping notes about what to expect. If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected].

Our headquarters for Saturday will be in the McMaster University Student Centre, Rooms 206/207. Please try to arrive to the campus by 8:45AM (8:30AM if you are bringing buzzers). We are planning to start at 9:00AM, so try and budget your time with that in mind.

Terrapin is a regular-difficulty tournament (i.e. designed to be around as hard as Penn Bowl or ACF Regionals). You can search for previous tournaments in the hsquizbowl database to find examples of questions from previous sets.

Also, since we only have four teams currently registered, we are likely going to do a quadruple round robin. I have added a tentative schedule that teams should be able to access / print out before the tournament commences. If you would like to change this format to a triple round robin (i.e. you would like to leave early), please contact me regarding this. I might change this if two or more teams are interested.

Lastly, remember to respond to this email as confirmation that you are coming. If anything comes up last minute, please contact me ([email protected]) or this email and I will respond as soong as possible.

Thanks,
Peter Cordeiro

Thanks again to everyone to came to Terrapin this Saturday at McMaster. A big thanks to all the McMaster members who graciously helped to staff this weekend. Another thanks is needed for teams coming to play to make this tournament possible (A special thanks to Ming-Ho for coming all the way from Boston to solo heroically against the other teams).

Congratulations to Toronto A (surprise, surprise) who won won the tournament 12-0. The top scorer was Faheem from Toronto B with almost 56 PPG, but special mentions go out to Erik (from Waterloo) and Aayush and Rein (both Toronto A).
