Great news! For the first time in several years, Tulane will be hosting a tournament that is not just intended for high schoolers in the form of Missouri Open. It will take place on 11/21/2015 and registration is open to all who wish to attend! To register, shoot me an email at [email protected] detailing your team (or your desire to find a team) and any buzzer systems you can/will bring.

Pricing:
$70 for an open team
$50 for a complete college or high school team
Discounts:
$5 for every working buzzer system
$5 for every 100 miles driven according to google maps

More information to come later!

The tournament will be taking place in Newcomb Hall right off of Broadway. We will start registering teams at 8:30 and will (ideally) start matches at 9. There will be an hour for lunch after whatever match ends closest to 12

I have no idea what time Tulane has the rooms reserved until, but would people be interested in some sort of mini-tournament afterwards? There's a couple possibilities that spring to mind:

SHAWARMA I (visual movies)

Delta Burke (novice academic tournament) - perhaps just tossups in a shootout style?

I wouldn't be opposed to some additional quizbowl.

We only have the rooms reserved until 4 so I don't think we can pull off the side tourneys. Sorry friends!

I'm not sure if a college tournament has ever ended before 4pm, so is there a backup plan in case we're in the middle of round 8 and campus security comes and kicks us out?

I mean, Tulane is not crazy strict, and no one is scheduled after us so I would not be concerned about security kicking us out

Unofficial tournament results:

Billy Beyer/Kevin Marshall led after 10 rounds at 9-1
ULL + Dargan Ware was at 8-2
Tulane 7-3
LA Tech 6-4

The tournament was called because it was after 7 and I think Tulane didn't want to stay any longer. Mr. Sundberg plans to force Billy and Kevin into a Skype final of some sort.

Yes, yes! After both games came down to one tossup, it is only fitting!

That was fun. Thanks again to Tulane for hosting and to everyone who made the trip to New Orleans to play.

Oh Nick beat me to it. Yes that is how the results played out. Thank you for everyone who came out and made the tournament rad. Stats will be up as soon as I get my meaty claws on them (they are saved don't worry)

Why exactly did you guys not finish the tournament? New Orleans sounds like a fun place to visit, but why should teams who might consider attending tournaments at Tulane in the future do so with the prospect of not getting everything you pay for?

I'm glad you asked! Because we're a blast to be around!

The tournament ended when it should have, as I said nothing about there being an advantaged final. We played all the games we were scheduled to and by that schedule, Billy and Kevin won, as they swept the playoffs. I made no mention of there being an advantaged final. I am sorry to those who think there should have been one but it's untrue to say the tournament was called early.

It is pretty standard for college quizbowl tournaments to include an advantaged final when nobody clears the field by two games. Unless you explicitly said you weren't having one then I think it makes a lot of sense why the people playing the tournament felt you had ended before the tournament was finished.

That being said, if you're going to run a tournament you should make plans to include a final (even advantaged finals) when it's necessary. It's a standard practice.

At any rate, can you post the stats? I hate to be that guy, but you have posted here three times today so I figured I would ask just in case you forgot.

They are still out of reach of my big meaty claws but they should be up by tomorrow. I will post them as soon as I get them, which may not be until tomorrow. My apologies for the wait and my continued unorthodoxy. My momma says it all adds to my charm

Stats are up. Sorry for the delay. A quick note on them: Although there is a link to prelims, we do not actually have those saved. Something got lost in confusion and the file that I thought was the prelims was actually just the finals. So only the combined stats can be accessed. Also, While Florida appears above Tech in the standings, Tech took 4th while Florida won the bottom four playoff division.

Again, thank you to everyone who came out and made this tournament great. It was a lot of fun to play with people from all over. We hope to do this again soon :bees:

You can generate a report containing only some of the games (e.g., the prelims) from the combined stats file fairly easily:
  • Open up the combined SQBS file and fill in the "Round" box for each game (labeled "Rnd" in the lower-left corner of the game entry screen).
  • Go to Settings -> General, and then under "Rounds Included in Reports" click the "Rounds __ to __" radio button, and fill in your desired values (e.g., 1 to 5).
If the games are entered into the SQBS file in chronological order, I can't imagine this taking more than 10 minutes.

It looks like one of Florida's games, 3 of Alabama's games, and 2 of the 19ers games and Tulane Closed games are missing from the combined stats file.

I think one or two of the bottom-bracket teams decided to leave early, so not all of those games were played.

I've spiffied up the stats for this tournament. They can be found here. The report also includes forfeits where necessary. As checking forfeit for both teams was not an option for one match, I just noted it as a 0-0 draw with 0 tossups heard. I'll do a little additional maintenance once the tournament concludes in the (hopefully) near future.

Thank you so much Jake! And yes, those missing matches are the result of teams leaving early
