SHEIKH and VICO Online (August 29th)

Post by naan/steak-holding toll »

Hey guys,

Since a lot of people aren't going to get to play any of the main VCU Open sites, Jordan and I figured that it would make sense to organize an online mirror of our set (details here) to give even more strong players an opportunity to play it. We'll run this as a standard Skype tournament - it shouldn't take too long, since there will be 10 packets and they're all tossup only.

Update 8/11: We've decided to pair this with an online mirror of VICO so people can set aside one day to play both sets. The signup sheet for SHEIKH is now official, though you should email me a few days before the actual tournament to confirm that you're playing.

The size of teams will be determined by how many staff we can get. For now, assume it's doubles - we may change this later.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

We'll charge a small fee for this (probably $5) payable whenever we run into you later during the year.

I'm going to start making plans for this soon and round up some willing staffers. I think interest will be low enough that we can stick with doubles as the plan.

There will be an online mirror of VICO in tandem with this. You can sign up for it in the second tab of the SHEIKH spreadsheet. It'll be $5/player, and team size will depend on staffing availability.

I think I'll aim to start at 11AM Eastern so that people on the West Coast don't have to get up super early.

I don't have the ability to get on Google Drive right now, so you can count this as my official registration for this event (both SHEIKH and VICO). Anyone interested in teaming up with me for either is welcome to email me at [email protected]

If you're still on the free agents list on the spreadsheet by next Thursday evening, I'll assume you are playing and assign you a random teammate.

I'm capping the field at eight teams. To make eight teams happen, I will need two more staff (I only have myself and Chip so far).

I'm soliciting staffers individually but I would still really appreciate any volunteers, since I don't want to have to create triples teams or anything like that.

Also, apparently Jacob and Will aren't able to staff VICO Online. I haven't heard anything from them, so assuming that I'm running the event, I'm looking for staffers for that as well.

I'm assuming this is still happening this weekend? Looking forward to play VICO.

How are VICO-only participants being notified of the start of the event?

I'll make a post about it here and in the chat room I'll have set up all day. Jacob said he'll try to round up staff - the people I asked didn't seem to want to commit to too much time, though I could be wrong.

EDIT: The field cap is still 8 for SHEIKH online because I only have myself and three staffers. I'm giving people an extension until tomorrow to form teams. I'm going to allow triples, but I'm going to ask that no triples be formed until all 8 doubles slots are filled up.

I'm creating a contact information table on the signup spreadsheet. Please put your name and contact info (Skype and email) there; this will be used to send out logistics tomorrow. I plan on starting SHEIKH at 11:30 AM Eastern Time and VICO at 4 PM Eastern Time.

I have also formed teams out of the free agents. Laurence, Ryan, and Trent are now a team. Dan is playing with Joe and Saul. This will be the field; if you still wish to play, contact an existing team to join.

Are you planning on randomly assigning people to teams for VICO as well?

Since it appears that people aren't forming teams and that Jacob won't be involved with anything, I'll do that as well tomorrow before I email and post the schedule plans. I should have clarified, thanks.

I have formed random VICO teams in the same way that I formed random SHEIKH teams. The field for VICO is now capped at six teams; people wishing to play should seek to join one of those.

People who still have not posted their skype contact info and email should do so now. Things will be run out of the IRC room #sheikhvico - I'll sign in around 11:00 to get things going.

The moderators for the tournaments will be as follows unless something funny happens:

SHEIKH: Will Alston, Tejas Raje, Patrick Liao, Andrew Wang
VICO: Will Alston, Jason Golfinos, Richard Yu

The schedules for both tournaments have been posted on new tabs in the signup spreadsheet for everyone's convenience. SHEIKH will be seven rounds of round-robin prelims plus an NAQT-style advantaged final, with second place ties broken on packet 8. SHEIKH will start at 11:30 AM Eastern Time. VICO will be five rounds of round-robin prelims plus a NAQT-style advantaged final, with second place ties broken on packet 6. I plan to start VICO at 4:00 PM Eastern Time assuming SHEIKH goes smoothly; I won't start it any earlier than that, just so nobody is caught off-guard.

Moderators will be instructed to start reading ten minutes after the tournament officially starts if a person's entire team listed on the spreadsheet is not present AND the missing person has put their contact info on the spreadsheet. If the late person hasn't put their contact info on the spreadsheet, then moderators will start as soon as possible.

I will be emailing people who have provided me with contact info giving them this information and a link to this forums post.

Is there any chance Sebastian Drake, Sam Baker and myself could play tomorrow from the same computer? (I'm aware that would require a bit of team shuffling - sorry about the late expression of interest but all of us have only just arrived in Montreal.)

If you can work that out yourself, it's fine. I'm not taking any additional teams but if a reshuffling is arranged by the tournament time tomorrow then I will be fine with it. People have had ample time to arrange teams so I am not going to work to make arrangements for people myself.

Eric and Mik cleared the field to win SHEIKH. Ankit, Richard, and Will defeated Charles, Jeff, and Kirk to take second place in a playoff, since both teams were tied at 5-2 after the round robin.

VICO will be starting at 4 PM. Live stats will be kept here:

I'm flattered for the extra points, but I'd like to point out that it was probably Corry that went an amazing 4/2/2 against the Eric-Mik team, not me. The stats have that mixed up, I think.

Anyway, thanks for running these events! It was a solid 6 hours of enjoyment, aside from having to wake up early on a _weekend_.
