Ottawa Hybrid Tournament

Post by bsmith »

There are 2 spots available for the Ottawa Hybrid Tournament on March 19, held at the University of Ottawa. It is a half-academic/half-trash open tournament, with several packets written by participating teams (packet submission is not necessary for admission). It is untimed, and lames and powers will be used.

Sorry if this is a late call, but I'm hoping to fill up the last 2 spots. Most eastern Canadian teams are attending, so this can be an opportunity to see the somewhat-revived circuit.

The tournament website is at: http://ca.geocities.com/uotrivia/OHT05.html

-Base fee: $60
-2nd or more teams, with players all attending the same school: $50
-Minimum fee: $5

-Buzzer discount: -$10
-Full-time staff: -$10
-Rotating moderating: -$5 per subbed-out player
-Travelling from outside a circle available on the website (mostly outside NY & VT, west of Toronto, east of Quebec City): -$10
-packet discounts have nearly expired

Teams attending:
-Brock
-Carleton (University)
-McGill (2)
-U of O
-Ottawa-area players
-Rochester (4)
-Toronto (2)
-Western Ontario (2)

If you are interested in sending a team (or two), let me know soon at uotrivia -at- yahoo.ca

To add:

If any schools are interested in hosting a mirror (or partial mirror) of this hybrid tournament at a later date (probably any time in April, May, or June), please let me know. There will be at least 13 packets available (possibly up to 16 if the expected latecomers trickle in), and I am very cheap for swapping (perhaps in exchange for another tournament set that would be available for the writing teams).

UBC is holding a mirror on the 26th, but it appears to have become the butt of some jokes...

The first Ottawa Hybrid Tournament was held this past Saturday at the University of Ottawa. 14 teams competed in a tournament featuring a mix of "trash" and academic questions.

2 pools of 7 teams played a round-robin, followed by a bracketed split of upper 4/lower 3. Final standings:

Upper bracket:
1: "11-2" (Toronto) 10-0
2: "What Would Brian Boitano Do for a Klondike Bar?" (Rochester) 8-2
3: Team triviahalloffame.com 7-3
4t: "Dick Pound's All-Stars" (McGill) 6-4
4t: "Plastered Stuffed Animals" (Brock + UWO) 6-4
6: "African Swallows" (Toronto) 5-5
7t: McGill B 4-6
7t: "Rock, Paper, Scissors" (McGill) 4-6

Supporting bracket:
1: "Vexillologists Anonymous" (Rochester) 5-4
2t: "LegoMan's Fan Club" (Ottawa) 3-6
2t: "The A-Team" (Carleton) 3-6
4t: "Brad Andrews Fan Club" (Rochester) 2-7
4t: "Michelle Kwan's Heimlich Maneuver Rescue Squad" (Rochester) 2-7
4t: "Catastrophic Blood Loss" (UWO) 2-7

Statistics are available here, excusing the Geocities pop-up for Windows users:
http://ca.geocities.com/uotrivia/oht05/ ... dings.html

Top individuals were Gordon Arsenoff (What Would Brian Boitano Do...) at 58.5 ppg, Bobby Hsu (11-2) at 56 ppg, and Paul Paquet (triviahalloffame.com) at 44 ppg. The top rookie was Dave of Rock, Paper, Scissors at 39.5 ppg

Thanks to all the teams that wrote packets, all the players that helped out during byes, and all the people that made the trip to Ottawa, whether near or far.

Please note that UBC is holding a mirror of this tournament next week, and some questions may be used at an upcoming hybrid tournament in May, so please don't publicly discuss questions on the various boards.

Once again, thanks, and we may see you again if we get around to hosting OHT2 next year.
