ICCS ("Collegiate Novice") @ Ohio State 9/20/14

Post by tintinnabulation »

I am pleased to announce that Ohio State will be hosting a mirror of the Introductory Collaborative Collegiate Set, (a replacement for the annual Collegiate Novice Tournament) on September 20th, 2014.

The tournament will take place in Enarson Classrooms Building starting at 10AM, with registration starting at 9:30. Final format will depend on the number of teams, but all teams are guaranteed seven games.

Eligibility Rules:
1. All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below.
2. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.
3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.
4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor for special permission to play:
i. If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits). Time in a post-secondary high school program does not count.
ii. If you were ever on a playoff or top-bracket team at NAQT HSNCT or PACE NSC.
iii. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.
iv. If you have ever won any college tournament.
5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.

Procedure for applying for special permission to play: 1) Email Fred Morlan at fredmorlan[at]gmail[dot]com; 2) state which of the Rule 4 points would render you otherwise ineligible; 3) list when and how you came to achieve any of the accomplishments that lead to your being otherwise ineligible; 4) state succinctly why you want to play.

Entry fees:
$15 base fee per person ($60 for a team of 4)
-$5 per team per working buzzer system
-$5 per team if your college played zero events in the 2013-2014 school year
-$5 per team per 100 miles traveled (one way)
Minimum fee: $5 per person ($20 for a team of 4)

Registration:
To sign up, email me at ohiostatequizbowl[at]gmail[dot]com and let me know how many teams and buzzers you will be bringing.

We hope to see you in Columbus!

We will have a field cap of 14 teams, contingent on getting more staffers.

OSU A beat Case Western in a very close 2-game advantaged final to win the tournament. Thanks to everyone who came out; we hope you had a great time!

These stats make no sense. Are rounds missing? Because it looks like you were doing a round robin, stopped after round seven with one team at 6-1, another at 5-1, and another at 5-2 and had a "two game advantaged final" between the first two teams?

We could only play seven games (ten packets, 2 for finals, one for ties) and had ten teams. One team dropped at the last minute, so we had to use an uneven number of byes. We went by losses and since the 6-1 team had beaten the 5-1 team earlier in the tournament (5-1 team had a bye and the 6-1 team didn't), we decided to use advantaged finals after consulting ACF rules and deliberating.

The situation was definitely less than ideal, and I'm interested to hear if there was a better format we could have used or if there is a precedent for this sort of situation.

Wait so what was the plan when it was 10 teams and still 10 packets?

Everyone played 7 games in one pool; not all teams got to play each other. This was also sub-optimal and was what resulted in the uneven number of byes.

That absolutely defeats the purpose of having a pool in the first place. A team that would normally be fourth could have missed the three statistically best teams and still be undefeated. In this event I would have sacrificed your house team and ran a full round robin.

Running a logistically-sound tournament is definitely a high priority (especially for our future planned tournaments; I would have sacrificed a house team in a regular-season tournament) but still comes after the main purpose of Collegiate Novice/ICCS: getting players to play on questions and against competition appropriate for newcomers to college quizbowl. Ten packets is not overly condusive to small fields that are larger than 8 teams; however, we wanted to provide a introduction to college quizbowl in a tournament setting for as many new players as possible, including our own, and hope today's players had a positive experience that will motivate them to continue participating in college quizbowl.
