Texas Quizbowl Camp Tournament mirror at UMN (09.13.14)

Post by Auks Ran Ova »

Hello Minnesota-area quizbowl fans:

We will be running a small mirror of the TQBA tournament and, pending approval, DUST, on September 13 and 14 (respectively) at the University of Minnesota. Due to the small expected field size, the TQBA tournament will likely be a two- or four-team event with some drafting and redrafting; DUST may be the same, but might also be a shootout. The TQBA tournament will cost $10/person. This thread will be updated with further logistical information when I get it. Please let me know if you're interested in attending (the email address on my profile is fine).

Isn't DUST just a handful (ha-ha-hee-ho) of all tossup packets? Why does that need its own day?

Primarily because Foster has work conflicts Saturday nights and I'm assuming he wants to show up and get owned on the Pokemon questions again (plus it lets us start later on Saturday without creating as many TIME CONFLICTS!!!). I'm sure we can gin up some other stuff to do by September 14--maybe I'll write a second MCMBR packet, or some sort of other novelty event.

I might show up for the DUST thing, although I find it frustrating to play trash questions on things that happened before the question author was born but which are right in my college-years wheelhouse.

Are you planning on the TQBA thing being open? This is another way of me asking if I can play despite the fact that I'm old enough to be a grandparent of the target audience. Since this is a non-home-football Saturday I may have some free time.

On reflection, the grandparent thing is probably hyperbole.

I have no power or affiliation with UMN anymore (but hell, neither does Rob!), but I'm pretty sure this is an open.

Actually, the name of the set is DISCO, which stands for Demanding Intense Summer Camp Open, so I think it's safe to say this is an open tournament.

The ragtag group of mostly trash players currently known as This Is All Ben's Fault should be in for DUST. Possibly the TQBA tourney as well, though I'm far less certain of that.

How many people is this? It may be worth looking into doing DUST in teams. I'll set up actual sign-up sheets for the two weekends tonight.

There are dozens 4 of us. If it's shaping up to be smaller teams, that's fine too.

I may also have other folks wanting to play DUST. I'll get an email circulating and see if there's any interest.

If people interested in playing this weekend's events could sign up here, I'd appreciate it, especially because it'll give me an idea of what sort of staff I'll have have to rustle up.

Bumping in search of a logistics/timing update.

It may be relevant that the 14th is a Vikings home game. Impacts on campus traffic and parking will not be non-trivial, even on the West Bank.

Seconding the request for more info on logistics. We're just a few days away now - anything new to report?

Sorry about the delay, guys. It's looking very unlikely that we'll be able to get rooms on Sunday at the U, so we'll probably have to combine the two events into one day. DUST is just eight rounds of tossups, so it should go by quickly; my idea right now is that we can start pretty early Saturday and run DUST first, in case people have to leave later. My apologies if this significantly impacts anyone's DUST-attendance plans--I'd been waiting to hear back from the people with room-reservation power on the U's team.

If you are still planning on coming, please sign up on the Google doc if you haven't already. Erik, if your offer to staff DISCO still stands, it'd be appreciated!

EDIT: I should include that anyone who comes out to staff DISCO will have their lunch covered.

My offer definitely still stands, though I have a ticket to The Replacements show that night. Assuming things wrap up by mid-afternoon, I should be able to make that work.

I am all in favor of a Saturday-only event and running DUST first, but I'm not sure what your idea of 'pretty early' is. Can you provide more specificity? I'll probably have to rearrange stuff for that morning. Thx

Probably around 8:30. I'll have more information soon, hopefully tonight.

Just sent out an email about logistics. The most important part is:
Please meet in Blegen Hall room 210 at or by 8:30 am.
If you didn't get the email and should've, it's because I don't have your email address! Hit me up at the address on my profile and I'll forward it to you.

The post-lunch steamroller that was SEALMANIA!! won this tournament, being able to avoid my demand for a face-saving final by the margin of Andrew Hart's clutch knowledge of Mexican juices. Stats are here.

We actually played DUST first, starting with one free-for-all seeding round and then doing three two-packet rounds in two rooms with promotion and relegation. Here are the standings, ranked by total points in the top room:

Rob Carson: 180 + 175 + 230 = 585
Erik Nelson: 75 + 105 + 85 = 265
Tim Varecka: 85 + 75 + 70 = 230
Carsten Gehring: 40 + -- + 55 = 95
Brian Weikle: 60 + -- + 30 = 90
Sam Ross: -- + 65 + -- = 65
Bryan Berend: -- + 10 + -- = 10

Thanks to everyone, staffers and players, for coming out, and thanks to Drew Scheeler and TQBA for some fun tournaments.
