Imaginary Landscape no. 2 at VCU Open

Post by magin »

I'm pleased to announce that Imaginary Landscape no. 2 will be held Saturday, August 2 after VCU Open. This edition was written by me, Dave Letzler, Jacob Reed, and Rebecca Maxfield, and it's a good tournament. You should play it.

The tournament format will depend on the number of people who sign up; we have 8 packets of 20 tossups, like last time, but I don't want to choose a format until I have a better idea who's playing.

Each packet consists of 20 pyramidal audio tossups, like last time. Each audio tossup lasts about a minute, and consists of 5 or 6 clips arranged from hardest to easiest. Before each tossup, the moderator will say "name the composer" or "name the work" or "name the type of piece" or "name the album" or "name the type of piece AND the composer." Players can then interrupt the audio tossup and buzz whenever they think they know the answer.

The distribution is similar to last year, but will include 1 more pop music question per packet. I'm still crunching the exact numbers, but each packet will include tossups on composers, orchestral music, operas, piano music, chamber and choral music, jazz, movie music, musicals, a country, and pop music. If you'd like to sign up for this tournament, or if you have any questions, please post in this thread or email me at [email protected].

If you'd like to mirror this tournament, please email me at the above address. Looking forward to seeing you all there!

Is there a place where we can find Imaginary Landscape 1/is it even available for public consumption?

This was utterly fantastic. Obviously, I have been waiting a long time to play such an event, and it was worth the wait. Most of the minor flaws of execution from the first one seem to have been ironed out. I hope that many more of these are produced in future.

Aaron was keeping the official score. I also kept score in my notebook, but I think I missed a couple of buzzes, so, I won't post the numbers I've got unless the official scoresheet has been lost.

Here are the stats. Because this was a shoot-out, we decided it would be more fun to play with no negs. We also had a few late arrivals.

People who heard all the packets
John - 930
Matt J. - 150
Jordan Beckenstein - 80
Aaron - 220
Max - 70

People who heard 2 (maybe 3?) of the packets
Evan A. - 10
Chris R. - 30
Matt Bo - 20

Why do you picture John of Gaunt as a rather emaciated grandee?
