MUT over Skype (5/10)
MUT over Skype (5/10)
The Quizbowl Team at University of Washington in conjunction with Boise State will host a Skype mirror of the Minnesota Undergrad Tournament on Saturday, May 10th.
For East Coast teams, the tournament will start a little later than usual--namely 11:00 AM EDT. I expect the tournament to go until around 8 or 9 PM EDT.
The tournament is open to all undergrads and to all high school players. I am willing to let otherwise eligible players who don't attend the same school to combine within reason. Teams can have players playing from up to 3 locations. In other words, you could have a team of 4 people all playing on one computer, or you could have 2 people playing on one computer, 1 player on another, and 1 player on a 3rd computer. Teams in the same location are preferred, if only to reduce the possibility of technical problems.
The fee for this tournament will be $80 per team.
We will play at least 8 rounds and ideally around 10 rounds.
To register, e-mail Colin McNamara at [email protected].
We'll post more details on how the tournament will actually work. In short, you'll need a Skype account and a microphone to play.

Re: MUT over Skype (5/10)
Due to a conflict with the Berkeley MUT mirror the week before, I would like to play this one. I'd enjoy having new teammates, especially as I anticipate that most of my current teammates will play on the 3rd.

I should be able to moderate for this if necessary.

This is still happening, right? Just haven't heard about logistics yet.
Re: MUT over Skype (5/10)
I sent out an e-mail to everybody. I think your teammates got the e-mail, but I didn't send it to you because I didn't have your address. I'll forward you a copy of it now.

Two teams just dropped today, and one who recently expressed interest decided not to play.

We will be withdrawing if a fourth team doesn't register within the next several hours.

Re: MUT over Skype (5/10)
Why did these teams drop out the day before the tournament? How are they not playing a tournament that they could literally play in their pajamas in bed? And I understand that it's a Skype tournament, so it's not necessarily as big of a deal as a real tournament, but I did block off a large part of my day for this.

In the case of Cinco Rancho, they'll be playing it over the summer at TQBA camp.

Re: MUT over Skype (postponed to 5/17)
This tournament has been postponed to next Saturday, 5/17.
There is still room for more teams, if people are interested.

Tanay can't play because he is graduating. There will be a spot on that team for an interested player.

Please make sure you are not competing for teams or moderators with the CHB mirror already announced for this date.tiwonge wrote:This tournament has been postponed to next Saturday, 5/17.

Re: MUT over Skype (5/10)
I might be interested in getting my team to compete in these Skype mirrors in the future. How exactly are they conducted?

Re: MUT over Skype (5/10)
Your team, your opponent's team, and a moderator set up a conference call (audio, not video) using Skype.
The moderator starts reading a question. When you know the answer, you type into Skype chat: "buzz" (or, preferably, "buzz 3" for question number 3, etc.) If two teams buzz at the same time, the moderator sees whose buzz shows up first in chat.
The moderator stops reading and you give your answer. Bonus, etc. (It's helpful for the other team to mute the mic on the bonus, but remember to turn it back on before answering the next tossup.)
Other than that, it's pretty much the same. Does this help?

Re: MUT over Skype (5/10)
Yale cleared the field.
The chimera team finished second.
(The two high school teams left after round 6, so the last 4 rounds were just played over packets 7 and 8.)
Jacob was the top scorer at 140 ppg, and Joelle was second.

A big thanks to Robert for reading, which allowed me to enter stats over the last two rounds, and for Michael and UW for recruiting and hosting the high school teams.
