Feats of Weakness 2 - World Edition - 12/22/13

Post by Auroni »

So since the first incarnation of this event seemed to go over pretty well, I've decided to bring it back this year. I was initially going to just have a Feats of Weakness-like event very similar in distribution to last year and write this idea as a separate side tournament, but I don't think that's the best usage of my quizbowl leisure time, so I'll combine them.

The idea here is that every answer in this tournament is a country. The questions will come from every area of the ACF distribution (including trash), roughly distributed in the same manner, but with a lower weight for science. The reason for this is that I don't want this event to just be "one ______ from ______ did ________" ad infinitum, but to genuinely try to explore movements/trends/phenomena in different countries, and I'm not completely sure how to do that for different kinds of science questions quite yet. If I figure out a satisfactory way, I might reconsider the distribution.

There will be 126 questions, apportioned out into six rounds of 21 questions each. (1 tb per packet) I plan to read all of it at once at 5 PM PST on the IRC on the 22nd of December (one day before Festivus). Last year it was on Christmas Eve, which I thought might have diluted the audience. I have decided to apportion it out into rounds because I know that several people gathered to play it informally in person after I posted the packet on hsqb, so I wanted to encourage its use as a typical side event for those who want to play it that way or those who can't make it to the irc reading. If you're interested in running this as a side tournament, feel free to contact me; I don't care about money.

I forgot to mention, but I'm obviously not going to ask for a different country in every question, because that would be insane. Countries will be repeated across categories, maybe even more than once.

Damn, I was really hoping to hear that question on the music of Kiribati.

Some more details, in case anyone cares:

Per packet, the following distribution will be used. 5 lit, 5 history, 3 arts, 3 RM+thought, 2 trash, 2 science, 1 non-boring geography. There will be powers and superpowers. Mainly I'm writing about things that interest me, so expect these questions to be pretty long and pretty hard. Also don't expect a polished set of questions at all, since this is just an experimental fun thing.

Fictional countries will be presumably excluded, right?

I'm going to reduce this by a packet, so there will be 105 questions instead.

This is going to take place in #featsofweakness on Slashnet at 5 PM PST tomorrow. If enough people show up, I'll see if we can form two or three large teams.
