Collegiate Novice 4 writer, host, outreach, and answer call

Hey. I'm looking for people who are interested in collaborating with me on Collegiate Novice 4.

Writer call

Here's how writing for Collegiate Novice works:

1. A group of quizbowlers helps me pick a tournament worth of tossup and bonus answers.
2. You tell me how many questions you want to write for each deadline (end of June, end of July) and in what categories.
3. Sometime in late May, I send you a list of answers to write by the end of June.
4. You turn in your questions to me at the end of June and I give you your answer lines for July.
5. You turn in your questions at the end of July.
6. You get paid for your contributions (that are used, though I only had to discard a handful last year because of previously unseen repeat issues) based on gate receipts (likely around $3 per question).

I'm soliciting open nominations (feel free to nominate yourself or any writer you think would be good for the project). I'm mainly looking for writers who haven't worked on a large tournament project before, but anyone is free to email me. Last year, everyone who wanted to write got to write in the categories and quantities they wanted. If for some reason you can only write for one of the deadlines, that's no problem. This is a great chance to get some feedback on your writing.

Please email me at [email protected] to nominate yourself or others (and include the nominee's school affiliation). If I don't get back to you immediately, expect something by May 25.

Host call

Collegiate Novice 4 is available for mirroring on the following weekends:

September 7
September 14
September 21
September 28
October 5
October 12

In regions that do not start until later, I will be working to find hosts for early October, but I strongly prefer hosts to run the tournament in September.

The tournament specifications will be the same as last year. There will be ten packets of strictly difficulty-controlled questions. I will be attempting to find many host sites to keep travel times down. The tournament should start a little later (around 10am unless there are exigent circumstances) and end by early afternoon.

Mirror fees are a flat $5 per player. I'll provide more info about what you can charge and what you owe the writers in the hosting guide that I'll send to interested teams.

Outreach call

I'm looking for people interested in helping me with out reach for this tournament. Send me an email if interested. We'll figure out payment based on what you're interested in doing.

Call to people to help me pick answers

If you're interested in helping me pick answers for the tournament, please let me know. Every year, I create a Google spreadsheet and fill it in, with the help of a bunch generous people, with answers. This helps me make sure that the tossups and bonuses that the writers create are appropriate for the difficulty.

Hey, I am the representing Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau and we would like to host a mirror of your tournament. I do not yet know what day we would like to host yet. I will let you know in the future what day we would like to host this.

Thanks,

Brandon Daake

Virginia Tech is interested in hosting Collegiate Novice again. We're looking over the logistics of everything before we confirm a date, but we're eyeing the end of September timeframe.

I'd like to remind people to send me writer nominations (either self nominations or other people) for Collegiate Novice. There haven't been as many so far this year as in years past, at least so far.

Any update on the question writing situation? I sent an email and PM offering to write for this tournament, but have seen no reply.

I've been setting up some logistical stuff; sorry for the delay. Everyone who emailed me is on my radar and I'll be sending out assignment emails by Monday at the latest.

Anyone who sent me an email about being a writer should have gotten a mass email from me just now. If you didn't, wait a little bit to make sure, then please let me know by emailing me at [email protected].

I just sent out the first Collegiate Novice assignments. If you didn't receive one and you wanted to, send me an email in the next few days and I'll send some answer lines your way.

Andrew,

I think you ment the weekends of October 5 and October 12.

Florida Gateway is definitely interested in hosting 10/12/13. (9/28 would be workable but not prefered).

Thank You,

I did! Thanks for catching that (and fixed). I'll be in touch via email shortly about the hosting.
