OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Hip-hop Doubles Tournament

Post by ryandillon »

This is the official announcement for a hip-hop themed doubles event. It will be played at some point during the HSNCT. The date/time will be determined as we get closer to the HSNCT and people start making up schedules for the various side events that are going on.

The tournament is composed solely of tossups, and the tossups are 9-11 lines each. Each tossup will feature a 25-point super power markings that will usually encompass only the first one or two clues, as well as 15-point power markings.

The distribution is as follows:

2 pre-1990
5 1990-1999
5 2000-2010
3 2010-present
5 Mixed (From any time period listed above)

As for tournament format, I'm going to set a field cap at 16 teams of 2. There are 8 packets, and I would like to run 2 divisions of 8 with a round robin followed by a crossover game to determine placing. Tiebreakers will be determined by PPG. To sign up, please do so here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc ... 2R3c#gid=0

The entry fee will be $5 per person, and each member of the top 3 teams will receive a prize of a hip-hop vinyl of a classic album. If you have any questions, please email me at [email protected]

I'm interested but a note to any potential teammate: it may take a nation of millions to hold us back but it will only take one Drew to keep you from winning.

So as long as this doesn't conflict with Schindler's Lit (and if Ryan is amenable towards high schoolers playing this), I'm down for playing this and am looking for a teammate. Pick me!!

If this is a different time than Schindler's Lit I would be willing to ride somebody's coattails to this and supplement them with my small knowledge of 2000-present rap.

What time is Schindler's Lit event going to take place Saturday night? I'll schedule it either before or after depending on what the general consensus decides is best.

I just talked to Morgan, and the lit side event being held at the HSNCT on Saturday night is supposed to end around 10:15, so I'm going to tentatively say that we'll start hip-hop at 10:30. I hope that isn't too late for everyone, but it should be done pretty close to midnight.

I don't know what geo monstrosity's plans are, but is it possible to run this on Friday? It just seems like a poor idea to plan to end at midnight IF the previous large side event at a high school nationals that's almost certainly going to be somewhat unorganized ends on time AND nothing goes wrong with this.

Hey everybody,

The tournament is going to be held Saturday night at 10:30pm. I realize that it being so late isn't the greatest, so in the interest of time, we're going to shorten the tournament to 6 rounds. The format will consist of a preliminary round robin in 4 groups of 4 teams each. Any necessary tiebreakers (record) will be broken by PPG. After that, teams will be rebracketed into another 4 groups of 4 teams each and play another round robin. The winning team from each preliminary group will go to the top flight, second to the second flight, etc. If there is a tie for first or a tie for third (each person on the top 3 teams gets some wax), ties will be played out on a 10 question half packet, otherwise, all ties will be broken by PPG.

Also, we are currently at 15 teams and are 1 team away from reaching our field cap of 16 teams. If anybody is interested and hasn't signed up yet, please do so quickly! And if anybody knows somebody who would want to play it, it would be awesome if you could hook that up because otherwise, one of the groups in both the prelims and the playoffs will only have 3 teams, and that would kind of stink.

Also, somebody mentioned that I should post a sample question, so here is one.

The singer of this song took a jab at Bay-area rock group No Doctors by having David Feldman appear as a dancing white hipster in this song’s video. It contains a reference to Chaka Demus and Pliers’ dancehall hit “Murder She Wrote,” and the lyrics “Runnin’ her hands on my fade/Bouncin’ on the 24s wit spinnin’ blades” appear in Twista’s verse on a remix of this song. This song’s original version shares the lyrics “Girl we off in this Jeep/Foggin’ windows up” with a more famous version, both of which appear on the album Chocolate Factory. This song was the artist’s second number one hit in the UK, following his song “I Believe I Can Fly,” and its hook repeats the phrase “bounce” ten times. For 10 points, name this 2003 hit for the headlining act of this year’s Pitchfork Festival, R. Kelly.

Definitely a lot of fun with a couple of really cool answers to boot. Some 20s were generous, and a few leadins here or there had some buzzer races, but that sort of thing happens at niche tournaments like this.

Are there going to be more mirrors, or will this set be released and posted some time?
