Delta Burke Mirror @ Jefferson CC - Louisville (11/10/12)

Post by prodski »

Jefferson Community & Technical College in Louisville Kentucky is pleased to announce we will be hosting a mirror of the Delta Burke tournament on Saturday, November 10th. Last year’s set can be found here: http://collegiate.quizbowlpackets.com/78/
Special thanks to Chris and the folks at Valencia for allowing us to do this.

Eligibility
Since the Delta Burke is written primarily for Community Colleges, any Community College is automatically eligible to attend. With the lack of competing CC’s here in the Midwest, we will open this up to any team consisting of Freshman/Sophomores only. If you have an upperclassmen who is a novice, please contact us concerning eligibility. No “seasoned” upperclassmen will be permitted – we want this to be an enjoyable tournament for everyone - not a bloodbath.

Fees
Base fee: $120
Buzzer discount: -$5 per functional system
Staffer discount: -$10 per functional moderator
Travel discount: -$10 per 200 miles one-way (from Google Maps)
-$10 for second team ($110)
-$20 for third team ($100)
Minimum team fee: $80

Registration
If you plan on attending this tournament, please e-mail me at peter.rodski AT kctcs.edu. In the e-mail include a phone number at which a member of your team can be contacted on the day of the tournament. Posting in this thread is NOT sufficient for signing up. I will send you a confirmation email and further info if requested (hotel info, ect).

Logistics
The tournament will take place on the SW Campus of Jefferson Community & Technical College, in the Social Science Building. Parking will be ample and free. Lunch WILL be provided (as well as morning refreshments – coffee, juice, doughnuts, ect). Registration will begin at 8AM ET, with the tournament to start (hopefully) at 9AM. Email me and we will talk. I will add that the lunch we provide and being able to watch me run around like a madman all day are both well worth the price of admission.

Could you elaborate upon the format of the matches themselves i.e. powers, negs, and possibly even set distribution?

Delta Burke is a tournament aimed at college novices with very little QB experience, though its difficulty sometimes gets a little harder than that. Packets are ACF style: 20 TUs and bonuses, no powers, negs are -5 as usual. Distribution is nearly identical to ACF, but there is a tad more American lit and history. Also, some bonus lead-ins make jokes, especially at the expense of Republicans, that are immature and terrible and inappropriate and thus make it so no one should really subject themselves to the set ever under any circumstances.

Congrats to Kentucky B and Kentucky A who finished tied for first at 7-2. Head to head record (1-1) against each other couldn't decide it, so we went to the 2nd tie-breaker: PPG (as agreed to before the tournament started) and KY B (304.4) edged out KY A (295.0). Centre (3rd) and Jefferson A (4th) also made the top bracket. Congrats to Scott Z (Jefferson A) who took top scorer (74.17 ppg). Grant (Ky B) took the 2nd place medal (48.33 ppg). Special thanks to Centre for the GREAT moderator they brought. And more thanks to the good folks at Valencia for allowing us to do this, tournament went smooth without any issues.
