Penn-ance: MIT mirror (10/20)

Post by reindeer »

MIT will be running the Northeast mirror of Penn-ance on October 20, 2012. Details about the set can be found here.

To register, email me at omurton at mit dot edu. Posting in the thread to express interest is fine, but I can only accept registrations via email. Also, please note that open teams are not allowed.

We will be using the same fee structure as the main site:
Base fee: $120 per team
Working buzzer discount: $10 each
Approved moderator discount: $15 each
Travel discount: $15 (more than 200 miles one way according to Google maps)

We’ll start with a field cap of 16 for now, but will be open to expanding that if enough teams bring buzzers and readers. MIT doesn’t have any buzzers of our own, so we need all the working sets we can get.

I’ll post more details about logistics as the tournament approaches, but for now everyone should be aware that, while MIT is easily accessible by public transit, parking on campus is extremely limited. There is a small parking lot at 139 Massachusetts Ave (on the corner of Massachusetts Ave and Vassar St) that several teams have used in the past; other information about parking is available here.
On public transportation, take the Red Line to the Kendall/MIT stop. Games will be held in buildings 2 and 4, which are marked along with the T stop on this map.

Register soon!

Field (12):
Brown (2 teams)
Dartmouth (3 teams)
Harvard (3 teams, 4 buzzers)
MIT (1 team)
University of Alberta (1 team)
Yale (2 teams, 2 buzzers)

Dartmouth should be sending two teams but we'll get back to you with details in the next few weeks.

We'll be there with at least 1 team. I'll try to get a second as well.

This tournament is just two weeks away and we only have one confirmed team. RPI? Brown? Cornell? Yale? UConn? Stony Brook? Williams? It's looking like this will be the only regular-difficulty tournament in New England this fall--you should take advantage of it!

Yale will attend with at least one team and perhaps a second. I strongly suggest emailing other teams in the region relentlessly if more don't sign up.

EDIT: We've now actually emailed you and are thus hoping that more than 1 team will be in the field list soon.

Just you and Alberta so far. Dartmouth and Harvard have expressed interest so I'm hoping to hear from them soon, as well as the other schools we've emailed. We may also be able to field a team of our own, if that turns out to make sense.

Put us down for 2 teams. We may add a third if I get more interest. We'll can bring 4 buzzer sets, and more if necessary.

Also, if the field gets big enough, would MIT mind if we ran a mirror of Ike Jose's myth tournament after Penn-ance? I've been wanting to play it and I'd imagine others in our region do too. Ike hasn't posted the questions yet at my request, so I want it to be run pretty soon. I'd be willing to organize it if some people volunteer to read, and I believe there isn't any cost to play.

Sinan and I played the myth at KABO, so we aren't interested.

Edit: and I think we plan on sight-seeing in Boston, so we probably won't be available to read.

That's fine with me, and I imagine that at least a couple of the MIT staffers would be willing to read. We technically only have the rooms reserved until 7, but I don't think that's likely to be a real problem.

I am especially in favour of this if it avoids teams having bye rounds

And we're up to two. Any idea what time we're starting and what room to gather in?

(Oh, and I've also already played ANFORTAS, so I'm out for that.)

With 10 teams signed up, we're going to try to get two house teams together so that we can do a 12-team round robin plus finals. Registration will start at 8:45 in room 2-190 (building 2 is marked in the map linked in the first post); please try to arrive by 9.

Is there someone at MIT not planning to play the myth tournament that Ike could send the set to?

We ran Ike's ANFORTAS myth tournament after Penn-ance. Stats are here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... dividuals/. It was a 4-person shootout, Anderson left after 4 rounds, and after that the rest of us traded off reading. So you should ignore all the head-to-head stuff and the team ppg, which I messed up somewhere because bonus points are nonzero. I really enjoyed the set and want to thank Ike for writing, and also want to thank Stephen Eltinge for reading the first 4 rounds.

Quizbowl history people, has there ever been anyone else who routinely put up stat lines like that? I don't think I've ever even seen anyone toward the top of a regular-difficulty tournament have more 15s than 10s.

Having more powers than tens while still being near the top of the field is not all that unusual, actually. (It happens more to specialists than generalists: in matches against crappy teams, the generalist usually picks a lot more questions at the end, which boosts his stats overall, but dilutes his power-to-ten ratio. Matt Bollinger's performance at last year's Sectionals is a notable exception to this.) But this is usually just slightly more powers than tens, or, at best, 2-to-1. Having more than six times as many powers as tens, while being near the top of the field and barely negging is definitely extraordinary.

2012 SCT: 22/8/0 over 226 tossups
2012 ICT: 35/10/0 over 288 tossups
Penn-ance: 31/5/2 over 220 tossups
I, in the player poll last year, wrote:Josh Alman is really really good
I hope you will all agree with me now.

(Aside: by ICT, it seems that Josh will have a power/ten ratio of 8.5. I know this must be true because I did a linear regression on the three existing data points and found that r = 1. Science!)

When you consider that he's playing next to Neil, a highly accomplished generalist, the entire time, it makes a lot of sense.
(Not just against crappy teams though.)

I'd just say that it's the rare case of a specialist and generalist actually having what results "should" theoretically look like, more or less. With an increase in level of difficulty, it becomes much more noticeable.
