QUARK Mirror at UW - 9/15/12

Post by Mike Bentley »

The University of Washington will be hosting a mirror of QUARK on Saturday, 9/15/12. This will be an open tournament with no eligibility restrictions. The tournament will be $15 per person to play. To register, e-mail me at [email protected]. I'm not aware of any other west coast mirrors of this tournament, so it would be great if a California team or two made the trek to Seattle to play this. September is still summer in Seattle, making it a great place to visit.

We will be hosting a mirror of Bayou a Drank the following day.

Registration will be from 9:00-9:30 AM in Denny Hall. You can park in Lot N1 or N5 for $5 on Saturday.

Field update (as of 9/10/12):

Me
Brittany
Alejandro
Chris
Steven
Angelo
Jessica
Joelle
Greyson
Carolyn
Evan
Nate?
Sally?
Joel?

I'm hoping there are a few other last-minute sign-ups. We'll probably break up into 4 teams and do a triple round robin.

We had a couple of drops at the last minute, so I'm going to try to increase the field with one or two Skype teams. If you're in a region that won't have a real mirror of this tournament and want to deal with playing quizbowl remotely, shoot me an e-mail at [email protected].

You'll need to pay your share of the mirror fee if you choose this option.

We ended up doing a fully local affair. We ran what I'm calling a "Seattle doubles" format (mainly because this is the second time we've done it), where we have 4 teams, but they all play in the same room, teaming up with one other team for the round. We vary teams each round. Thus, Round 1 is AB vs. CD, with both A and B getting a victory if they win. In order to make the stats work out, I've added a "teammates" player to each team, which can be disregarded in the individual stats.

Anyway, my team (me and Carolyn) ended up tied with the team of Chris, Evan and Nate. We played a final tossups only round which my team won.

Stats are here: http://www.hsquizbowl.org/db/tournament ... nal_stats/

If anyone from Washington has any criticisms of particular questions (or general feedback, even), feel free to let us know by emailing Kurtis, Libo, Bryan or me, so that we can make improvements before it gets played in two weeks. Thanks!

I sent all of the comments I wrote down to Libo last night.
