QUARK 9/29
QUARK 9/29
This is the announcement for the University of Michigan housewrite QUARK or Quizzing U About Real Knowledge. This tournament will be hosted at the University of Michigan on September 29, 2012. We are open to hosting this in other regions at different dates that are convenient for those regions.
Rounds: There will be a total of 14 rounds, two of which will be reserved for the finals. There will be powers at this tournament
Progress Thus Far: We are currently over 30% done with the tournament and are on track to finishing it by early September, leaving us about plenty of time to edit.
Distribution (per round):
4/4 Literature
4/4 History
4/4 Science
3/3 Art (1/1 Painting, 1/1 Music, 1/1 Other Arts)
3/3 RMP (1/1 each)
1/1 SS
1/1 Geo/CE/Academic Other (with at least 0/1 or 1/0 being Geo)
There will not be trash at this tournament. We might, however, write a trash tossup per round to be played for the amusement of the teams at the host's discretion.
Length: All tossups will be at least six full lines (in ten point TNR) and a max of eight full lines. I expect most tossups will end somewhere in the seventh line before powermarking. The majority of bonus parts will be two lines, though some will use part of the third line for clues.
Difficulty: We are aiming for slightly above regular difficulty. This means that all our bonuses will have truly easy parts expected from a regular tournament along with mostly reasonable middle parts. It is only in the third parts of bonuses and a minority of tossup answer lines that will be considered harder than regular. We expect top teams to get around 20 ppb.
Tournament Eligibility: Tournament directors will decide whether or not open teams / non-collegiate teams can play.
Mirrors:
Midwest: University of Michigan, September 29th
Missouri: Truman State University, September 29th
Texas:
Northwest: University of Washington, September 15th
South: University of Alabama, October 13th
Mid-Atlantic: George Washington University, November 10th
Northeast: Brown

Small update: We are now 77% done with writing this tournament, so we are well on our way to finishing this tournament. We will of course be using a lot of the remaining time on extensive editing/proofreading.

Hey, I (and possibly Bernadette) will be trying to attend this unless a closer/more accessible mirror pops up. Let me know if you're interested in playing.
(As requested, I'll actually email you, Michigan people, when I'm more sure.)

Re: QUARK 9/29
Unless we have a tournament that day, there should be some sort of DCC contingent here. Wether or not we go as a school or Something Ambiguous is yet to be determined.

I've talked with a few people. Thus far it seems GWU might host a delayed mirror of this. I'm not so certain about the Northeast. If anyone wants to host in that region, please contact me at zengl (at) umich (dot) edu as soon as you can.Ras superfamily wrote:Is there an east coast mirror for this?

Re: QUARK 9/29
I've updated the 2nd post with some more details about QUARK and the up to date field list.
If people could tell me more explicitly how many teams they are planning to bring that'd be helpful.
Also, this set is obviously done having been run at Washington already :)

Just in case it was skipped over in your update (sorry if it wasn't), do you have any further information or know when we'll get further info about the start time?Ringil wrote: The tournament will be held at Mason Hall. Hey if the field needs any adjusting, we only have 2 people on our team right now and could potentially combine with another team.

Re: QUARK 9/29
Who do mirror sites need to make the check out to, and where do we need to mail the checks to?
EDIT: I received Libo's email answering my question.

Re: QUARK 9/29
Here's some final information for QUARK:
The tournament will be held on the third floor of Mason Hall, as in all our past tournaments. Registration will begin at 9:20am. We'll try to get things started by 9:45, but it might not be possible to start until 10 because of how room reservations work. We'll probably have a later than usual lunch break because of the later start time. The tournament should end somewhere around 6-7.
We will have 16 teams at the tournament. The format will be a prelims brackets of 8 teams and a 7-round round robin followed by playoff brackets of 8 teams , where teams play teams that they have not already played already. Final will then happen as needed. That will give a total of 11 rounds+finals.
If there's any other questions anyone has, feel free to message me at the email provided above.

I hope everyone enjoyed the tournament and will try to bother some administrators to set up a private discussion forum shortly.
