Penn Bowl Mirror (Athens GA) March 10, 2012

Post by CSQuizJags »

The Cedar Shoals HS Academic Team will be hosting a mirror of Penn Bowl on March 10, 2012, in Athens, GA. At this time, we are placing an initial field cap of twelve teams. When we get a clearer view of how many readers we'll have, this may go up. This tournament is open to anyone (colleges, alums, high schools, etc.). Email us if you have a question about whether or not your group fits.

This will be the academic half of our Penn Bowl Weekend in Athens, as we will be mirroring Penn Bowl Trash as Tournament by the Sea IX on Sunday March 11th. Details for that are in the Trash section of the board.

Entry fee
Team 1: $125
Team 2: $115
Team 3 and subsequent teams thereafter: $ 100 each
Discounts
Buzzer discount: -$10 per working buzzer set Limit: 1
Distance discount: -$15 per 150 miles traveled one-way (determined by Mapquest)
Moderator discount: -$15 Limit: 2
High School discount: -$55 (only discount they can apply for)
Solo player discount: -$60 (only discount they can apply for)

Minimum fee per team: $95

Format: At the least a 1xRR with advantaged final. (Whatever I can do with 12 rounds)

Here is the link on the board for Penn Bowl in terms of distribution, etc. (http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewto ... =8&t=12330)

If you have any questions or want to reserve a spot, feel free to email us or post your intent on this thread. (cedarquizjags @ yahoo . com)

Thanks and we look forward to hosting you in Athens.

Your minimum fee does not make sense given the discounts offered. A solo player should be able to pay only $65, while a full team should be able to pay only $75 if they bring 1 buzzer, 2 moderators, and travel over 200 miles.

I think Alabama is going to the WKU Mirror of Penn Bowl, or at least I was informed they were. I won't be able to make that one, but you can consider a contingent from UA-Huntsville interested at this point. The number of people comprising this team is uncertain. For all I know I may come by myself or as a free agent or something.

Tentatively, a team from Alabama is interested in going as well. I don't know if Mark wants to combine teams, or what, but as of now we're not attending WKU Penn Bowl.

Of course if you guys end up sending a team I'll play with y'all. I'm just putting that there in the event Alabama doesn't go.

It's not looking like UAH will be able to field a team at this and I'm unsure of Alabama's status. Put me as a free agent I guess for now, I'd really prefer to not play this tournament solo.

Assuming he's up for it I'd be more than happy to team up with Mr. Rountree. The chances are looking like I'll be able to go, but I won't be able to 100% confirm until the tell me I've been given that day off from work.

So after much debate, I dare say Sean Platzer and I will be attending at least the Penn Bowl Mirror portion of this.

EDIT: It looks like we'll have surprise guest Billy Beyer in tow, as well!

It's looking less likely that an Alabama team will attend as such, but I'm still interested in attending this -- put me down as a free agent. Anyone interested in me as an addition to their team should PM me.

Yeah, Robin --- I'm waiting to hear back from Borglum definitively. We discussed it Wednesday night, and he said he's thinking about it (particularly if Seth Kendall can be joyously thwarted).

But as Billy rightfully alludes: his wife is the true decision maker in that household.

OK Robin --- so Borglum is out. His compassion to give us a chance to answer questions was what convinced him to stay home. He is a generous and humble man like that.

But: We'll likely have either Valencia's Virginia Ruiz or Orlando's own Luke Rego depending on scheduling logistics and such. Needless to say, it's not looking like we'll have a need for a free agent at this time.

See ya' in a couple weeks.

Now that this has been settled, can we stop it with the email bombings when posts come up? :)

Anyways, it's looking like we'll have 9-11 teams. As i'll be losing 1-3 people for Spring Break, if there's anyone in the greater ATL area who would love to come read, let me know. You would be paid with lunch of some sort (or dinner if you want to do so after the tournament). I'm not talking anything on a Provino's scale, but food nonetheless.

Also, if those who are attending would email me (cedarquizjags at yahoo dot com) soon, that would be great. This way, I can mass send the info email in due time (probably March 4th or 5th). Thanks!

This will be emailed and PMed to as many people as I have contacts for, but figured it also good to post here as well.

At this time, it looks like we'll have 8-10 teams at this event.

The tournament will start PROMPTLY at 9am. Teams can start arriving around 8am. Registration will be in the Grand Commons area of the school just off the main lobby. We'll be using the A200 hallway for competition (If you came to UGA's BARGE mirror, you've played in these rooms). There won't be a formal team meeting, per se, as we'd like to get the tournament started quickly to allow long distance drivers some daylight to drive home by.

At this time, the format looks like a 1xRR with an advantaged final. SQBS will be used for stats. Any other tiebreakers and such outside the advantaged final will be handled at the end IF they come up.

Lunch will be sometime after Round 4 or 5 and will be off campus. There are plenty of options near the high school and lunch will run about an hour. If you need suggestions, please let me know.

If you have any questions about hotels, etc., feel free to email us cedarquizjags at yahoo dot com.

ADD ON: If you're bringing a reader, please let me know. If not, and we have bye rounds, teams may be asked to help read a round.

I don't think my team is going to be very willing to pay such a high entry fee for only at a maximum 9 guaranteed rounds. Is there any way where we could be guaranteed at least 9 rounds, hopefully more?

Got an idea, Joey? I'm willing to hear ideas. Message me.
Keep in mind the field *may* go to 12 teams which then means 11 games. I'm waiting on two schools to get back in touch with me.

If we have fewer than 10 teams, do a round-robin then split into smaller fields, as is fairly standard? I guess if there are precisely 9 teams that could be an issue (since you'd have to split into 3 divisions of 3), but I for one would be happy to play solo or be otherwise re-jiggered to form an extra team assuming I don't bear additional financial burden because of it.

A bracket of 5 and a bracket of 4 could work, but then hey we have two bye rounds in the tournament and that sucks. I don't think you should play solo here at any point, especially in bracket play.

I have 14 rounds to play with (might as well say 13 in order to have a reserve packet). If we keep 12 teams, that's easy , but having an advantaged final would be tough if someone messes a packet up. If it's 9, it would involve two bye rounds, which would suck. If it's 10, it's a bit easier. I'll figure it out today.

Also, I'm changing the distance discount to reflect the rise in gas. It's now $15 for every 150 miles driven, not 200. I'll adjust everyone's fee accordingly.

EDIT: $15 not $20

At this time, I still have yet to hear from UGA (so close yet so far, even when you email them), so I have no clue what the format still is. However, with the possible add on of a second Seth Kendall-advised team, we should be now around 10-12 teams.

With that said, we'll still start at 9am on the dot (or close to it) and figure out which format right beforehand. I have schedules for 10-12 teams on standby.

Georgia is in with 2 teams. We're up to 11. At this point an 11 round 1xRR (10 games) with weighted finals (if needed) is looking to be the best remedy. If 2 GT teams come, then we have 11 rounds with weighted final (if needed).

Top four after 9 round prelim:
1- Georgia Tech (9-0)
2- Vitello/Beyer/Platzer/Brown (8-1) AKA Borglum's Basterdz
3- Adam Silverman/Brady Weiler (7-2)
4- Alabama (6-3)

1 and 2 are playing an advantaged final and 3 and 4 are playing for 3rd as we speak.
