2011-2012 Collegiate Preseason Podcast

Post by Smuttynose Island »

Here's the link to the 2011-2012 Preseason podcast. Some points of highlight are UVA's unanimous selection as ACF Nats winner, while Brown garnered most of the preseason ICT no. 1 votes.

I wasn't actually picking teams in any order for Nats or ICT.

I had long suspected we were the best. Now, I have absolute validation. It's a wonderful feeling.

I will say I come from the school of thought that you should try to say things that are interesting, even if controversial, in these kinds of predictions, rather than the typical chorus of "good teams are good."

They typical chorus is "I hear he's good at quizbowl."

Yeah, that was groundbreaking humor years ago and has only sustained itself to the present day because ____.

I'm quite flattered that these more prominent members of the community actually know my name, so thanks for the shout-out. (Especially since the last podcast I saw just said "we're not talking about ASU" :) I did find it interesting, though, that my name was mentioned while ASU's recent 25th-place national finishes were not, especially since those finishes came from a team that didn't even exist two years before and whose members had zero experience with good quizbowl until the year preceding that 25th place D1 finish. Not that my ASU teammates aren't happy being anonymous (I didn't mind it either, while it lasted), but if you're going to recognize me, I'd give my teammates some credit too.
Unfortunately, the only thing the podcasters got right about me was my name. I do appreciate your recognition of the massive logistical feats I've accomplished in my time, but many members of the large teams whose trips I coordinated, being new players back then, are no longer new players and thus may decide not to play ACF Fall anymore. This together with the departures of a few members means that ASU will likely have no more than 12 members attend novice tournaments this semester. In addition, I am no longer an officer of ASU Quizbowl, so it would not be me sending the teams to tournaments anymore, but one of our current officers. I will also not be continuing to request predictions of my team's PPB (surprise!) since the expert opinion given to me was that no such prediction could be made accurately. Sorry to make your predictions about me wrong. :)
Just fyi for the record. Nice podcast, and I hope I'll be able to make it to both Nationals again this year to see how your other predictions turn out :)

This is true only if Jamie plays. Toronto is losing Jordan Palmer and Jay Misuk from their Div. I ICT team last year, and Western's Will Nediger is going to UMichigan.

If Jamie plays, Waterloo will be heads above the competition. If not, I think we might have a great leveling of Canadian quiz bowl.

Is Eric Monkman still at Toronto? Even without Jordan and Jay, they've got a good team, and some strong younger players as well.

As for Waterloo, James is certainly back this year and will hopefully be a regular part of our lineup. If I may say so, our supporting cast doesn't look too shabby, either. : )

The best high school players of last year who didn't go south went either to UToronto, UWaterloo, UOttawa, or Western, but only UWaterloo is keeping most of its top-scoring members from last year from those four.

As it seems we're not having a preseason poll, is it ok if those who participated in this podcast posted their Top 25s? It'd be easier than having to cobble one together from what was said on the podcast.

I think top 25 posting would be cool and I'd share mine along with my criteria/weighting if anyone makes a list.
