The following is an announcement and call for interest for The Illinois Open 2004: The Philosophy of Spite, which will take place at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign on November 13, 2004. Once again, I am in charge of this tournament. Anyone interested in attending this latest in a series of fine events should e-mail me at [email protected] at his or her earliest convenience.

As it always has, The Illinois Open 2004 will be an ACF style, packet submission, open eligibility tournament. This year’s target difficulty is, once again, somewhere close to that of ACF Regionals. In particular, I would like to make this tournament somewhat, though not greatly, less difficult than it was last year. An acceptable packet is required of each participating team without exception, unless granted a dispensation by me. Anyone wishing to apply for a dispensation, for whatever reason, must request one of me by e- mail at [email protected] before the packet due date, which date is October 16, 2004. No set of circumstances gives an ironclad guarantee of a dispensation so, if you intend to request one, I urge you to contact me at once.

Distribution and Packet Guidelines:

(#TU/#Bonuses Category)
5/5 Literature
5/5 Science
5/5 History
3/3 Religion, Mythology, and Philosophy
3/3 Fine Arts
2/2 Social Science
1/1 Geography
1/1 Your Choice (trash, current events, anything above, or anything else. I.e. your choice)

Beyond that, please follow these three simple guidelines:
(I) Please write questions with unambiguous, well-defined answers and without "filler," i.e. sequences of information or non-information that do not directly imply a single answer or set of equivalent, explicitly acceptable answers.
(II) Please vary your questions in each discipline over sub discipline, time period, and region where applicable.
(III) Please write questions of reasonable length. Tossups of more than eight lines or less than three are unacceptable; bonus parts of more than four lines are unacceptable; bonuses requiring six prompts under any circumstances (e.g. 10-5; 15-10-5) are unacceptable, and bonuses requiring five prompts should be used very sparingly, if at all.

It is my fondest hope that guidelines more specific than these are not required, as they were not last year. As always, if you find these requirements too vague to operate upon or do not understand them, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at [email protected]. I reserve the right to reject as unacceptable any and all packets that I feel blatantly disregard these guidelines.

Formatting:

I prefer to receive packets as Microsoft Word files containing text as 10 points Times New Roman and attached to e-mail to [email protected]. https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/msorice/www/i ... xample.doc is an exemplar of the formatting I’m looking for (if, most certainly, not the content.) The rules followed therein are as follows:
1. The first two lines ought to be the tournament title (“The Illinois Open 2004: The Philosophy of Spiteâ€

Hey,
The Illinois Open 2004: The Philosophy of Spite is less than a month away. The no-penalty packet deadline in today, and nobody has asked for a packet exemption, so I'll hope to see some more packets and/or registrations soon. I have granted several extensions, so, if you've got one, don't panic; just get your packet in at the agreed-upon time. We currently have a field of 10 teams registered, which consists of:
  • Iowa State
  • Texas and Texas A&M (packet submitted)
  • Drake (packet submitted)
  • Chris Goheen et al.
  • Kentucky
  • Wesley Matthews et al. (packet submitted)
  • Michigan (packet submitted)
  • Illinois Chicago (packet submitted)
  • Chicago, twice
I have received at least tentative interest from several other parties, so the field should grow in the next several days. I'd like to invite anyone who's interested to please register by e-mailing me at [email protected] as soon as possible. Ideally, I'd like to get 3 more teams.

"Chicago" A (Litvak, Maddipoti, Teitler, Yaphe) defeated Michigan (Kemezis, Lafer, Berdichevsky, Westbrook), topping a field of 9 teams to win the Illinois Open 2004: The Philosophy of Spite. The full stats are now available at http://netfiles.uiuc.edu/msorice/www/io ... teams.html. These include the results of the initial 9-team full round robin, the two 4-team playoff round robins, and the single final game that was required to decide the tournament in "Chicago" A's favor. The various "Unknown" players in these stats result from two rounds in which a room was short a scorekeeper during the playoffs and didn't keep individual stats; I am sorry about these. Anyone with any other questions about these stats or the tournament results can raise them here, and I will do my best to answer them.

That dispensed with, I'd like to offer my sincerest thanks to everyone who made this tournament possible, particularly: to Greg Lindsay, for taking an interest in our little backwater of a tournament; to all the teams that came out, for having faith in us, for being polite and gracious about the errors that were made, for warm complements and honest feedback, and for writing a number of outstanding packets; to the members of the ABT who came out to staff the event and/or play on our house team, Adam Janzen, Tom Phillips, Andrew Ullsperger, Brian Ingrassi, Kelly Tourdot, Matt Riebel, Micah Hodosh, and Steve Canning; to our stats people, Tom Phillips and Kelly Tourdot; to our moderating staff, Dom Ricci, Dave Kiang, Matt Cvijanovich, and Sudheer Potru; to Chris Romero of Texas A&M and Juliana Froggatt, Jeff Hoppes, Ray Luo, Paul Reverdy, and Larry Wang of California Berkeley for writing freelance packets (your packets are in the mail;) to the ABT members who wrote a huge number of quality questions, Kelly Tourdot, Dave Kiang, Matt Cvijanovich, Dom Ricci, and Sudheer Potru; and especially to Sudheer Potru, to whose willingness to do what it took the tournament entirely owes its existence and success. I thank you all very much for making this event a success, and I can only hope that next year's event knows such good fortune and friends, whoever's running it.

The questions from the Illinois Open 2004: The Philosophy of Spite are now available for sale or trade. Please e-mail me at [email protected] if you are interested in purchasing or trading for this set.
