ANNOUNCEMENT: VCU OPEN TRASH (8/14)

Posted: Wed May 18, 2011 7:28 pm
by Frater Taciturnus
The 2011 incarnation of VCU Open Sunday will be held on Sunday, August 14th. It will be a trash tournament written by Mike Cheyne and George Berry. We have commenced writing the set, and expect no issues with on-time completion or question quality. There is no packet-submission requirement or discount for this event.

As the main site of VCU Open will be at the University of Maryland, so will this tournament.

The target difficulty of VCU Open Sunday: Trash Tournament Edition is probably around SCT difficulty.

We have arranged a mirror in Michigan (8/7) and would especially like to see mirrors in Texas, California and Florida. We would also be interested in mirrors in other areas. If you would like to mirror VCU Open, please e-mail Cody Voight at [email protected].

The registration fee for this tournament is $120. There is a buzzer discount of $5. If you staff one tournament and play the other, you will get a -$10 discount for the tournament you play in, e.g. if you staff VCU Open, you will be given a -$10 discount if you play this tournament.

If you would like to register a team, please contact me at [email protected]

This set is the set Mike Cheyne previously announced last year--

I'll talk a little bit about what to expect from this set now that it's no longer its stand-alone thing.

I'll rank the difficulty as about "enjoyably vanity." A lot of you know me and know what I like, and you can expect a fair portion of that. That doesn't mean I'm going to ask about super obscure stuff, especially in the tossups, but it also means you might not see a ton of things in the stuff I don't like (like, say, rap, the NBA, video games after 1995)--of course, George will help fill the gaps there to some extent. I think it will be its own sort of unique experience which I think will be enjoyable.

There will be fourteen packets. There isn't really a sub-distro inside the categories, but I'll try to keep it reasonable. One thing that I have a tendency to write are cross distro bonuses, so that might result in an overflow of some categories on a packet by packet basis.

Currently, Donald Taylor has written some questions as well, and if anyone else wishes to fire off some questions, contact me or George. I'd like to limit the number of collaborators just to keep it simple.

I'm really looking forward to having this mirrored, especially in Michigan.

If you are looking for a team/teammate you should probably fill it in.

The Donald himself, Donald Taylor, will be writing some questions for this. He has especially been helpful in writing on non big three sports.

This may come as a surprise, but not really.

I'm going to throw myself out there for free agency. I'm worth at least 20 points a game and 2 amusing negs per tournament.

I would like to be a free agent for this. My strengths consist of being overshadowed by Neeraj Vijay at every trash tournament I've played to date.

I may be able to go to this and the main event now, PM or e-mail me if you have a spot and or an interest in forming a team. I've been known to contribute to good trash teams or something.

I believe, with the exception of tiebreakers, every question is now written for this and editing has commenced. I would be interested in playtesting categories, especially those in areas I'm not the best at writing at (music + sports). I can't set up any schedule (and I actually would find it most convenient in the afternoon, as opposed to most people), but if you're in the IRC when I'm around, check out #trash.

Hey, I'm on a team looking for two more players, ideally ones that know old TV, movies, 80s music, and comic books. Email me at [email protected] if you want to join up.

I played on this set yesterday at WUSTL and I must say I really really liked it. I told Mike about some of my quibbles but overall I thought it was well written, the breadth of the questions was appropriate, and that it was very tasteful. He and the others who wrote it deserve high kudos and if you have an opportunity to play on it and like trash, you'll enjoy it.

I played this set at UTC yesterday and also think it was quite enjoyable. Props to Mike, George and the rest of the contributors for producing a nice set which made for a very enjoyable tournament.

This tournament is now two weeks away-- If the team you have been putting together is not registered, please do so soon.

Also, for people who are still free agents: there are teams that still have holes, some of which have posted in this thread. I can also give you an email address for some of the shorthanded teams if you email me.

NC Wesleyan needs a teammate, yo. We were half-decent enough to be middle-of-the-pack at CULT nationals, and this is the same team. We are nice people!

EDIT: This at least refers to Jacqie and Chandra.

Right now these teams are registered. Given our current staff limitations I am going to put a cap of 11 registrations unless extra staff materializes in the next few days.

I sent an email to Cody a day or two ago registering two Maryland teams for this (and one Maryland team for VCU Open proper).

Maryland has registered two teams, so the field is closed unless we find more staff.

With 11 teams we will run a full RR plus finals as necessary.

Hey, is there any way this set could be power marked before Sunday? I understand if there's not time when people are racing to get more important things done, but everybody loves trash powers.

I powermarked the set. If anyone complains about powermarking, I will kill them and frame Chris Ray.

I'm asking for the time and place for the trash tournament. Will registration be at 8am Sunday in either Jimenez or the Armory?

Unless I hear otherwise from Maryland, I am going to say this will be the same as VCU Open which Cody says is:
SirT wrote: We'll be meeting in Jimenez 0105. Games will start an 9 am, so registration will be from 8:15 to 8:45 am. I'll be sending out an e-mail with final details tonight or tomorrow.

For some reason, pushing "refresh" may be the answer. They didn't show up when I first went there, but I hit refresh and they appeared.
