Whimsical Before and After/Mashup Event at MO

Post by Cheynem »

Instead of writing a video game packet, I think I'm going to do this. I enjoy "before and after" type questions, so for the MO Sunday events, I am going to write between 1 and 100 before and after questions (final number to be determined by how much of a crunch both MO and this "dissertation" nonsense take up). These will be gently pyramidal (as pyramidal as these can get, which in some cases, is non-existent) of about three lines. Some of them, a lot of them probably, will not be the literal before or after format, but more of a mashup format which I think allows for more excitement (for example, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Blade Runner is not strictly speaking before or after, but is a fine mashup). In the best spirit of vanity events, some of the questions will be impossible to answer because they require you to read my mind. These will obviously be played shootout style at some point on Sunday.

I know people don't like paying for things, but I would appreciate people paying about fifty cents or so (assuming at least 20 of these can be written). Sometimes I get thirsty during quizbowl events and I would like to buy a soda, so this would help me to do that.

Hey, I'd like to play this in some form at the MD mirror. You know I will give you many quarters, Mike.

I will not pay more more than 49 cents for such tomfoolery.

Also, will these mashups be purely literature based, or will they be awesome and involve multiple subjects? I really want to hear that tossup on The Arnolfini Wedding at Cana.

They definitely will involve other things besides literature.

We're leaving pretty early on Sunday, since we lose an hour going back to Michigan. However, if anyone's interested in playing this Friday night, I'd hope we'd be in around 9 or 10 PM.

Mike wants either 50 cents or a dollar a head from the Maryland site. I take it people are willing to pay me to pay him, or pay him directly? Is someone/ones down to read? I am happy to read one of the side events like RPG

Exactly this. For anyone who's leaving early on Sunday, we'll hold an informal mirror starting around 10 PM on Friday.

EDIT: Cancelling this due to lack of interest/the likelihood that this will be held on Saturday, after all.

I have 20 of these done. Assuming a similar pace, there definitely will be 50, maybe even more.

I will be sending these to Mik and Dan this evening. There, as of now this minute, 60 of them, with the possibility of more if I can only finish some homework.

They tend to be more pop culture based than academic, but rest assured there are some exciting nuggets of academic fun. There are also some gentle meta questions, so I hope nobody is offended.

If possible, it might be conducive to play this on Saturday night before or after Wild Kingdom, as it should be short, it takes one event off Sunday, and some folks wanted to play this who wouldn't be around Sunday.

This was played as a shootout with something like 25-30 people. Mike Sorice got 15 of these, Rob Carson got second with some number, and Magin got third with some other, lower number, and most people got 1 or 0. Someone may have kept the scoresheet for this. Overall, I'd say this was a fun set questions.

EDIT: Once again, I failed to tell two certain MN players apart.

Dan Passner has my scoresheet, but if I recall correctly (I didn't keep track of negs), Matt W had 320 pts, Chris Ray 160 pts, Brick & Mehdi 30 pts and Kevin Koai (I think it was Kevin Koai) had 10pts. see Dan's blurb below.

I was keeping score on a the back of a scoresheet (I believe), which I'm pretty sure I left in the room.

I enjoyed these a lot, even though I only got one.

I literally just got back. These were indeed whimsical. 17 people played, which I quickly split into two rooms. One kept track of negs, one apparently did not.
