Re: ACF Fall New England: Brandeis (6 November 2010)
Pardon the delay, but stats are finally up: http://people.brandeis.edu/~valiant/acf ... 010-stats/
I made a mistake and put them all the same file (assuming that SBQS could somehow take rebracketing into account)--playoffs and prelims stats will be separated by the middle of the day. My apologies again.

I have to say, Needham High School, a team that apparently is pretty new to high school quiz bowl(?), putting up 12.38 ppb with their A team at Fall is pretty impressive.

In fact they have never missed an HFT (until next week?), going all the way back to the first in 2006.Crazy Andy Watkins wrote:They are often an HFT attendee; I don't know how many other tournaments they play.Ronnie the Bear wrote:I have to say, Needham High School, a team that apparently is pretty new to high school quiz bowl(?), putting up 12.38 ppb with their A team at Fall is pretty impressive.

I applaud Brandeis for their speedy posting of stats!
Two sorta strange things I noticed;
In Yale B vs. Brown, we got 306 points?
And in Yale B vs. Yale A, we got total negs of -2? Is that a thing?

Gah, you people with your "facts" and your "analyzing information on what actually happened".
Still, this is the first time I've heard of this particular school going to a more difficult tournament; that's not a bad performance at all.

Brandeis C forfeited because both Ariel and I were sent to speed up the reading elsewhere, a decision that, judging by your disappointment with the inadequate reading, you should support. Once again, the problem could have been avoided altogether had more readers been sent.

I still think Neil is doing it; just an unfortunate conflict came up the same weekend.

Is it the case that Harvard offered to bring readers but was told they weren't needed? If so, why?PrinceOfPersia wrote:Once again, the problem could have been avoided altogether had more readers been sent.

As Neil (Gurram) said above, I'm definitely not dropping out of quiz bowl just yet; just busy this weekend. Plus, we would have had to write a packet, which I neglected to do this summer.Frater Taciturnus wrote:Playing Tiddlywinks with Neil Fitzgerald.TheKingInYellow wrote:Where's Anurag?

If you think you would have needed to because you played a collegiate tournament in high school, then I believe that's untrue?nafitzgerald wrote:As Neil (Gurram) said above, I'm definitely not dropping out of quiz bowl just yet; just busy this weekend. As I recall, I competed in Fall and Winter (and also MUT) for the past two years with EPHS, so I thought I would have to. Maybe that's not the case, though?

I played Regionals '09, and was told that my team would not have to write a packet as a result. I believe the implicit reason was because I was in high school when I played Regionals. If that is the case, then you (and I) do not have to write packets until we begin junior year, I believe?nafitzgerald wrote:As I recall, I competed in Fall and Winter (and also MUT) for the past two years with EPHS, so I thought I would have to. Re: ACF Fall New England: Brandeis (6 November 2010)
Approximately. Before our work schedule for HFT was looking the way it is, I offered more readers (essentially, Dennis--who was there--plus me, Dallas, and Sam). More recently, I said that we could send two teams and Dennis--I was stupid to assume that Vu would feel like he had the status-cojones to say "fuck you, we need more readers" and never explicitly said--after that second offer of one reader--that we could bring more if things were really trying. That's definitely on me.grapesmoker wrote:Is it the case that Harvard offered to bring readers but was told they weren't needed? Re: ACF Fall New England: Brandeis (6 November 2010)
Given that similar confusion continues to accompany the announcement of the SCT locations, it seems like this is a good time to repeat my suggestion that Harvard, Yale, Brown, and MIT get together at the beginning of the school year to work out who is going to host what in New England. Particularly the big tournaments that only some schools can possibly staff (like the SCT and probably also ACF Fall) should probably be on a set year-by-year rotation. If you don't work it out now, then we're going to reprise this thread in February. Alternatively, you can all book your plane tickets now for the only Region 1 SCT site with its act together; we would be happy to have you.

Yeah, and Guy and I have tried to do the same but with more limited success (for Fall, at least); we're going to collaborate on SCT (last I checked, at least).grapesmoker wrote:I did that last year. http://people.brandeis.edu/~valiant/acf ... 010-stats/ Full stats are now up, with any wonkiness (mostly) ironed out. The standings for the playoffs are really whacked out, because so many teams left early and I didn't feel comfortable recording a bunch of forfeits for (what has been made resolutely clear to be) my own errors.
