IO 2011 3/5 - 3/6
IO 2011 3/5 - 3/6
Quick overview: This year's incarnation will be written by me and a people who know science. Your science writers insofar are Jeremy Eaton on Physics and a lot of the other science, as well as Surya Sabhapathy for biology. I still need a chemistry editor. Cotact me if interested. It will be played on Saturday, March 5th. This will not be a packet submission tournament and our target difficulty is ACF Regs++ / ACF Nats Prelims. There will be a bevy of side events at the main site, so I encourage everyone to play those as well, - I will post the schedule of side events when I figure out what that is so that people buying plane tickets can make sure they won't have to Lully out of them.
Key differences from last year:
This will be an open tournament. It is designed to give competition to those preparing for Nats and to have a bunch of quizbowl luminaries congregate for an event more grand than Scriabin's Mysterium while at the same time not completely overwhelming those who know the regular difficulty canon.
Miscellanea:
I still need a chemistry editor.
I will want some mirror sites for those poor souls that can't come to this tournament.
The side event slate is in a state of flux. If you have one you would like to run, I'll see what I can do.
Location: Some building at UIUC. I really want to get one of those ultra-nice ones engineering ones instead of the poor liberal arts one, but that's nearly impossible.
Elgibility: As long as your body is made up of organic components, you can play.
Costs and other discounts
Base fee: $120
Buzzer discount: -$5 each
Moderator: -$10 each
Travel: -$5 for every 100 miles.
Running Field:

I've updated the post with more tentative information. I'll also keep a running list of teams in the first thread.
Also we have one side even lined up already. See the side event announcement for it.

Hey guys,
Since some people wanted an update with regards to this and the other tournament:
I have written exactly 58/ 55 for IO, and 2/0 have been written for the associated side event.
Naturally, I and Craig will be knocking out a bunch of this over break.
Also, for the record:
Jeremy Eaton will be doing Physics and most of the other science categories
I will be doing the CS.
Surya of Michigan will be doing the biology.
Michael Hausinger will be doing the chemistry.

Sorry I just saw this.Morraine Man wrote:Any mirrors or rumors of mirrors?
I haven't had anyone approach me for mirrors, but I highly encourage institutions (particularly on the west coast) that do want to mirror this to contact me. That said, I hear that there's going to be a lot of competition at the main site, so if you're one of those people who gets a lot of utility from playing intense gameplay I recommend you to come.

I haven't heard of one. I'll probably be emailing / contacting a bunch of pepole over break in search of mirrors.

Re: IO 2011 3/5 - 3/6
I have created a logistics thread for the main site. See here for further information.
On a side note, I would be quite happy if a moderator decided to move all posts related to the UIUC field from this thread over to the one I created.

What kind of side event is this? Would it be Saturday evening, Sunday morning, or Sunday afternoon?
