Early Autumn Collegiate Novice Tournament at Duke (9/18)

Post by azngod1992 »

Duke is hosting ACF Novice on 9/18.

Logistics:

Location: Biological Science Building, a map of Duke's campus is here: http://map.duke.edu/?x=530&y=-351&z=2&w ... &new.y=448

Time: 10:00AM, please arrive by 9:45AM for registration. If you want a decent parking spot, I would advise showing up as early as possible, since the Alabama-Duke game is sure to bring a high demand for the few visitor parking spots we have on campus.

Parking: Usually, parking is not strictly enforced for weekends, and assuming such a situation, the best parking location would be the parking lot right behind the Bryant Center, or the parking deck (assuming there is no one at the collection station); however, due to the Alabama-Duke football game at 3:30pm, we're not sure how strictly parking will be enforced this Saturday. Should there be a person supervising parking at the lot behind the Bryant Center, the parking fee (according to our parking website) is a very reasonable $4/day. If you are feeling particularly adventurous, parking on Towerview is also possible.

Pricing:
Base fee: $15/player [$60 for a 4 person team]
$5 off the base fee for schools per working buzzer system provided
$10 off the base fee for schools for each 100 miles traveled
Minimum fee: $5/player

Eligibility:
1. All ACF eligibility rules apply, except when they contradict the rules below.
2. This is a tournament for introducing collegiate novices to quizbowl. Consequently, no high school teams or players are eligible.
3. Anyone (who does not break Rules 1 or 2) who has never played quizbowl before is automatically eligible. Other academic competition does not count as quizbowl for this rule.
4. Players meeting one or more of the following criteria must apply to the head editor for special permission to play:
i. If you have already completed your second year of college (calculated from time in college, not credits).
ii. If you were ever on a playoff team at NAQT HSNCT or PACE NSC.
iii. If you have ever scored at least 30 points per game at any college tournament.
iv. If you have ever won any college tournament.
5. Anyone who does not fall into any of the four categories listed in Rule 4 is automatically eligible to play.

Format:
The field is listed several posts below. Since we only have 10 packets, we will be doing a full round Robin with the 10 teams, and saving the last packet for the potential of a tie-break at the end of the RR.

Also, PLEASE BRING AS MANY BUZZERS AS POSSIBLE.

Registration:
[email protected], or post here.

EDIT: Sorry about the quick date change.
EDIT 2: Time Change
EDIT 3: Parking and Format updates.

We just started our QB team last year with a bunch of people who hadn't played QB before. The names of people I would think fall below the threshold of "quizbowl success" necessary to play but who do not meet the "time in college" requirement are (so you can look at stats):

Jacqie Flynn
Jacob Strickland
Chandra Martin

We played at NAQT sectionals at Maryland (run by GMU), ACF Fall at VCU, and a few other VCU tourneys last year. Will these three players be acceptable? The only returning player I definitely know couldn't play is Adam Nyborg, who has scored too many points presumably.

If they're eligible, we'll definitely register a team!

Let me know. Message me or email at [email protected]

We've gotten eligibility for the relevant players; NC Wesleyan is bringing a 3-4 person team.

Price update: just clarifying, the the discounts are factored in per team, not per person. For example, if you bring a buzzer and 4 players, you have to pay 55 dollars; if you bring a buzzer and 3 players, you pay 40 dollars, ect...

Field Update, as of 9/12:
UNC: 3 teams
Wake Forest: 1 team
Liberty : 1 team
NC Wesleyan: 1 team
NC State: 1 team
William and Mary: 1 team
Duke: 2

Total teams: 10

If the field increases anymore, we might do a 2 RRs (prelim + playoffs). However, I think a 10 or 11 team RR is feasible.

Hey can I get an estimate for when this thing will be over? I've got a player who has to miss from about 12:15-4:45, and he wants to know if he should come or not.

So, right now, we're looking at about 8 or 9 rounds, so 4-5 hours + 1 hour for lunch if we begin exactly on time. I'm not going to make any promises, especially since most of our readers are rather inexperienced, but it should end around 4:30pm.

Hey William & Mary should be there with one team, two buzzers, and an experienced moderator if there's a discount for one (is there?). Also we qualify for over 100 miles traveled. There's an outside chance of a second team but I'll keep you posted.

Sweet. Although I don't have any power over budgeting, I think a $10 discount would be reasonable for an experienced moderator? I will bring this up at our team meeting tomorrow night.

Stats: http://results.scobo.net/SQBS.aspx?org= ... =standings

I like to thank everyone for coming to our tournament. I'm really sorry that the top 3 spots had to be decided by ppg and ppb due to a screw up in packet reading order by me. Hopefully, you guys still had a great time regardless. Also, I'm terribly sorry about the parking and the fact that the tournament was held in two separate buildings; however, since we only ended an hour later than I originally thought, it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Great tournament that was well run (and got done reasonably soon) and I'm sorry we showed up late! The packet error probably didn't matter since a three way tie can't really be broken fairly with one packet. This was a lot of fun for all involved it seemed.

Agreed. Tournament was well run despite a few hiccups here and there (stupid football game). I can say that everyone from NC State had a great time on Saturday.
