See the most recent post.

This is an announcement for the EFT mirror held at UIUC on October 2, 2010. We will be mirroring the merged EFT/MCMNT set, so see here for further information.

Location
This tournament will be held in the English Building which is located on Wright Street, just east of the Illini Union Bookstore. The full address is:
608 S Wright Street
Urbana, IL 61801
A map of the location can be found here. The English Building is the middle building on the west side of the Quad.
Tournament central will be in Room 160 (first floor, big lecture room). This is where you should start and end the day. It is also where you can go to have questions answered.

There is ample parking in the area, including lot E-3, which is right next to the main library and less than 5 minutes from the English Building. Parking is free in this lot on Saturdays.

Who can play this tournament?
Since we have merged this set with Brown's EFT, you can play this tournament if you an undergraduate student. High school teams can play this tournament. You should contact me if you have any questions about your eligibility or if you want to play on a mixed team.

What kind of difficulty can I expect?
This set will be in line with other novice tournaments, such as recent incarnations of ACF Fall.

Costs and other discounts
Base fee: $100
Buzzer discount: -$5 each
Moderator: -$10 each
Travel: -$10 if over 200 miles one-way as determined by Mapquest

Contact Information
If you wish to attend this tournament, or if you have any questions about it, you can e-mail the Tournament Director, me, at [email protected]. Michigan is expressing interest in this, so put us down as for a possible 2-3 teams

I think I said something to this effect in another thread, but Western Kentucky is interested in coming to this with 2 teams. When I know for sure that we'll be there, I'll e-mail you and let you know.

Depending on funding, U of L is interested in possibly sending two teams.

Funding is a little up in the air for my team, but at the very least, I'll play this solo.

Put WUSTL down for one team, with another exhibiting interest.

Yeah, NIU's moving from interested to confirmed. It's entirely possible a crush of new recruits all end up coming, in which case we'd have a B team.

A quick update on our end:

The room request paperwork has been submitted for this tournament so I will update that in the main announcement when I receive that information. I'm glad to see that teams are confirming their interest in attending this tournament and I hope to see many more teams do the same. Based on the information I have obtained, we are looking at between 20 and 30 teams based solely on those schools that have indicated interest in attending this tournament, which is fantastic. This means that we will need moderators; so please, if you can, bring a moderator and take advantage of that moderator discount.

As more and more teams sign up for this tournament I must once again reiterate that we will need moderators. Since we are running at between 23 and 37 teams attending this tournament, I wanted to inform everyone that I may have to forcibly reduce the size of the field should we not have enough moderators. I will give preference to those teams that notified me the earliest that they wanted to play this tournament and will limit each school to its A team. Once I have enough moderators to have each A team play, I will start allowing for the B teams of the school's that notified me earliest that they wanted to attend. So on with the C and D teams. I am also going to set a deadline of September 22, 2010 to sign up for this tournament.

I have also contacted Dallas Simons about mirroring his Julius Civilis Classics Tournament as a side event. I will update the main announcement once I have more information on that, but I did want to let everyone know that all persons who agree to moderate (that are not from UIUC) will be allowed to play this side event free of charge.

EDIT: I will only be looking at the list of teams considered "Attending" this tournament should I have to forcibly reduce the size of the field. Thus, if you aren't listed as "Attending," you should email me or post here.

Having side events at tournaments aimed at novices seems like a pretty poor idea to me - in my experience, the length of tournaments is already considered a downside to quizbowl by most novices. Of course, I'm also biased since I was hoping this tournament would be played at Minnesota Open.

I'm somewhat torn on this. I'm generally of the "restrain one's self on side events" mindset, but with ACF Novice and ACF Fall occurring around this time, one mild side event doesn't seem that like that bad of an idea.

I'd kinda rather run it at MO myself, but I guess I'd be amenable to whatever?

Mike Cheyne just claimed he was of the "restrain one's self on side events" mindset.

I should clarify "restrain one's self on running them during the regular season." I'm all for as many side events as possible at certain tournaments, and I have some kooky ideas for next summer.

Have you considered allowing another mirror to reduce the burden on your staff?

I leave the mirroring decisions up to the head editor, Ike Jose, and any other people he talks to about mirroring decisions. Thus far I have not been included in any decision on whether or not to allow a mirror.

I wanted to remind everyone that the deadline to sign up for this tournament is this Wednesday, September 22, 2010. I still need to hear back from the following schools that have yet to confirm their attendance:

Minnesota
Lawrence
Eureka
Ohio Wesleyan
Drake

EDIT: Since more people keep signing up, I thought I'd add a further reminder for what you should send me when you register teams.

1 - The definite number of teams you will be bringing
2 - The number of buzzers you will be bringing
3 - The number of moderators you will be bringing
4 - Your school address (for the travel discount)
5 - If you are sending one team, the number of players on that team (for the solo discount)

If you are already listed as attending, I should already have this information from you. If I don't, I will contact you at some future date.

Now that many teams have committed to attending this tournament, I wanted to provide a quick update with some of the logistics. I hope to start this tournament at 9:00 AM, which means teams should arrive by 8:30 AM so I can use that half hour to collect fees, go over the schedule, and go over some of the rules. I would like to have all moderators arrive by 8:15 AM so I can distribute packets before all of the other teams begin to arrive. I would prefer to have this tournament run paperless, so I ask that all moderators bring a laptop if at all possible. If you can't bring a laptop, let me know so I can have paper packets ready ahead of time.

As it stands now, we will need between 1 and 4 more moderators to run this tournament with 30 teams. I am working on finding those people. I would encourage one of the teams still listed as interested to register for this tournament as having an even number of teams is vastly preferable to figuring out some schedule with bye rounds. If anyone has questions, concerns, seine they know that can moderate, etc. feel free to contact me.

Before it was edited to add the two extra teams, that post contained a note that two more teams would be allowed in if they a) registered at the same time and b) could produce a moderator between them. So it's very likely that there are still enough mods.

Not any two teams in particular... I'm not sure at all who teams 31 and 32 are.

Teams 31 and 32 were Moraine Valley CC and WUSTL C (which I am going to assume will attend at this point in time). Should WUSTL C fail to attend, then there might be a Michigan D team.

If there are any undermanned teams (other than Malis/Winkler), Michigan could help fill the team with a freshman. We'd pay for our person, etc. Contact us at [email protected] if you're interested.

All of our teams are understaffed, but I thought that EFT didn't allow open teams?

I can explain this further on the tournament date or after I've gotten some sleep. I'll see if I have the time to do the latter between now and the tournament.

Due to a last minute cancellation, I am letting a hybrid Michigan/Chicago team play this tournament so there are 32 teams and I don't have to devise some sort of 31 team tournament.

I have also just received the Julius Civilis Classics Tournament set from Dallas Simons for use as a side event following this tournament  . The fee will be $5 for any person interested in playing this set. Just let me know the day of the tournament if you are interested. I intend for this to be a singles tournament, but will change that to a doubles tournament depending on the size of the field. As I stated before, outside moderators will be able to play this set for free.
