On behalf of the North Carolina Academic Team Association, I am proud to officially announce the NCOAST (North Carolina Open Academic State Tournament)--although the tournament has been unofficial for some time. The tournament will be held on March 13th, 2010 on the campus of Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina, and will serve as the North Carolina State Championship. More information regarding the tournament is as follows:
Eligibility:
A. Schools are welcome to register as many as two teams for this competition, although further teams may be allowed by the tournament director.
B. There will be no JV division. Varsity players must come from grades 9-12.
Schedule:
The tournament will be held on March 13, 2010, on the Guilford College campus in Greensboro.
The competition consists of 11 rounds of questions, and we expect each round to last approximately 35 minutes.
7:30 to 8:30 am On-site registration
8:45 to 9:05 am Team meeting
9:05-2:00 Preliminary Rounds (it is planned that the 7 preliminary rounds will last until 1:00 PM, with lunch afterwords, but this is subject to change)
2:00-4:00 Playoff Rounds
Questions will be produced by the National Association of Quiz Tournaments (NAQT), and as such we will adopt their rules and format. Rounds will consist of 20 10-point tossup questions, each with a 30-point, multipart bonus question. Questions: The questions will be provided by NAQT, with set IS-95.
The ideal format for the tournament will be Round Robin. If the number of teams exceeds 8, division play will be used, and cross-bracket games will be employed when necessary. If division play is used, the top teams from each division, based on win-loss record (ties broken by average points per game), will advance to the playoff rounds. The number of teams that advance will be determined by the number of teams registered. A 16 team playoff is anticipated, but if registration is less than 16, only the top 8 will advance.
In addition to the team championship, individual awards will be given as well as naming the 2010 North Carolina Quiz Bowl All-Star team.
Location: This year’s tournament will be held at Early College at Guilford. Paul Smith is the coach there and as such will act as the on-site tournament director. Eric Grunden will be handling pre-tournament registration. As we approach tournament time a supplemental packet of information for the day of the tournament will be sent out (including local food options, directions/parking, etc).
Eric Grunden’s contact information: [email protected] (please direct any inquiries about registration to Mr. Grunden)
Paul Smith's contact information: [email protected] (information regarding directions and other on-site will be coming through him)
First Team: $60
Additional teams: $50
Buzzer discount: $10 per working buzzer, limit 2
Please make any registration checks out to the North Carolina Academic Team Association.
Thank you for your interest, and we look forward to seeing you at the upcoming tournament!

Re: North Carolina Open Academic State Tournament (NCOAST)--3/13
Complete stats are now available.
They aren't quite in final form yet; I need to fix an issue affecting the individual stats for one team, but I should be able to fix it soon.

Edit:
1. Update: An error was brought to my attention that about 8 games had improper bonus heard values. I've fixed them and uploaded the revised stats. (3/14/2010 10:50pm)
2. Update: The last outstanding issue that I am aware of has been fixed. Please let me know if there any further outstanding issues. (3/14/2010 11:22pm)

Congratulations to RCHS A on the win. I think I speak for everyone who faced them at NCOAST...Peter's depth of knowledge is astounding. They will be serious contenders at HSNCT for sure.
Many thanks to Eric and Paul for co-directing an excellent state tournament.
