That's fine. Again, the only tournament conflict is VCU and that's not really going to draw many/any of the teams away from Charter. I'll met my kids know to plan for this day as my youngins are looking forward to it; it'll likely be the first tournament for quite a few people. We might bring 5 teams!!

Oh, and, yeah, i liked this. Do this again.

EDIT: Gah, another thing...

We're going to have V/JV fields again, right? I definitely have quite a few sophomores and freshmen who will feel better playing against teams of similar grades/abilities.

Yes, there will be JV bracket. The whole point of this tournament is to have a JV bracket, and I wish more tournaments (esp. in the beginning of the year) would do so.

Note that I had to change my date (again!). Hopefully this is the "final answer".

Sorry you changed your date to the 12th---we would have enjoyed the opportunity to compete on the 5th, but we have league responsibilities on the 12th. Nevertheless, we understand that you have to do what is best for the DFO, and we hope it is a great success. Perhaps we can come to the Blue Hen invitational in the late winter or early spring of 2010.

What packet were you looking at for this? An A set? IS-89A? Or a regular one? IS-90?

I asked for 89A. I hope to send my freshmen to Bel Air so I needed something different. And this tournament is designed with newer teams and the locals in mind. Since the median team at the DE state championship last January went 112.5 PPG on a regular strength set, I think this is probably the best choice.

Sorry we can't do the 5th. Our 8th admissions test is now again on that date and the building will be quite booked.

Barring any more unwelcome surprises from any level of our bureaucracy, this invitation should be complete and accurate. A paper version is available should anyone need one.

Please send us email to have your team(s) added to the list.

I hope you can make it. You surely have a good shot at taking this award home in its inaugural year. For all creative minds out there, the name is temporary until we debate the moniker further. I wanted something better than "trophy of champions" or "endurance award". Your suggestions (actual or humorous) are welcome.

We have now reached 48 teams. I will continue to admit teams if I think I can find moderators. As a courtesy, if there are any teams still interested please contact me in the next few days.

Also, buzzers seem a little on the low side. (The retirement of the Concord coach may have ramifications here.) If teams have buzzers they can bring not already listed, I would appreciate knowing about them.

Bill,

I am sorry that I have not been in touch - I will explain later. I would love to bring 2 varsity and 2 jv teams. I will be glad to read for the day and bring 2 or 3 buzzers as well. I am away until Monday, but I will e-mail you at that time. Let me know if you still have openings.

There seems to be a strong chance we will only have 4 teams now. Even though i've advertised this date for many weeks, two juniors just told me they have a swimming competition that they think is more important. But now i'm not sure if we're going to have 2V/2JV or 3V/1JV set now. We'll figure it out.

I think we've decided on 2 varsity and 2 junior varsity teams.

Couple questions for you:

~Do we plan on skipping math calculation questions at this tournament? This was done at RM earlier in the year to much fanfare.

~Do we plan on using a card system for prelims, or a bracket?

~Do we plan on still using a form of single elimination for the playoffs, or some sort of bracketing?

Do i really count like 55-56 teams attending this thing? This is awesome! We can't wait. Thanks again for having a JV field so the younger kids can have more meaningful games. This is why my kids love this tournament so much.

Let me know if you need any help, Bill, about scheduling or bracketing or anything.

Also, there should be a great competition for first at this tournament. I really don't know who might win it.

I agree on both counts. I can't wait to see how our JV team does. And I'm really excited to see who will win. It'll definitely be really close and really and competitive near the top. I'm really looking forward to this.

This is an offer I will gladly accept.

I am slightly concerned about the buzzer and reader counts, but am working on both. We've never gone above 48 so this is new territory. I am excited that JV has more than twenty. The UD team will hopefully alleviate some of my concerns.

Could I get someone from Bergen to let me know if all of those teams are varsity or not?
Dr. Isaac Yankem, DDS wrote:Do we plan on skipping math calculation questions at this tournament? This was done at RM earlier in the year to much fanfare.
An informal poll among the Charter upperclassmen indicated broad support for skipping the computation.

I'm thinking brackets on both counts. I want to do five rounds in the morning, have lunch, and rebracket a top sixteen (4x4) a la this year's Blue Hen. If either division ends up having a team count not close to a multiple of six, there may be some groups of eight in which you will only play five of the other seven in your group (aka a partial round robin).

No problem at all. I'm used to changes up to and including the morning of the event. It just helps with the planning.

I'm hoping JV stays right at 24, that would fit into the intended schedule well.

On another note, the Delaware ACC promises about ten people coming to help with the event. So I think we'll be clear with moderators. A few more buzzers might help.

Due to All-State band auditions and financial matters it looks like we'll be bringing two teams (one V, one JV) to this event. Sorry if this throws something off, I did not have a chance to meet with the team for a final head count until today.

No problem at all. I just found a voicemail from the Ranney coach, so we are back at 30 in varsity.

Does anyone have a buzzer we don't know about that they can bring to the tournament? Our estimate today left us about two short.

This is probably over; when we left, the final was between Bergen A and RM A.
Overall, a well-run tournament, as always. The questions are a whole different breed of dog; they seem like an enormous leap backward for NAQT, and I know that they can do A sets well, as 87A at Bel Air was pretty good. This wasn't. The distribution was wonky at times and I'll probably send a list of complaints to Jeff.

Personally, i just don't see much of a point of complaining about these A sets. They were agitating, like every other A set we've played on. But my novice teams liked them a lot and did very well and i'm proud of them. Our top team should have done better, but we were within one tossup of being an undefeated RM team, so, yeah.

I see a reason to complain about them if they are given to tournaments as sets to use where non-novices play. I like this tournament and want to keep coming back; one thing I really like about 87A was the fact that it accommodated both novices and more experienced players. This one did not.

Didn't see 87A.

Next year, as i've already mentioned to a few people, i would like to see this tournament use a regular set for Varsity, and an A set for Junior Varsity. That would appear to be fair. About a dozen or so teams in this tournament really had no business playing on these sets at all.

Everything about this tournament within Charter's control seemed to run excellently, while a few moderators were EXTREMELY slow and held up the games.
Can't wait for stats to be posted.

We're happy to adopt this solution.

I'm sorry to hear that so many people were disappointed with the set, and look forward to seeing specific criticisms in my email.

Until stats are posted, I recall the top 4 being RM, Bergen A, and the semifinalists B. Reed Henderson and Ranney. Whitman and CR were both in the top 8(I think, although this could be wrong) and my best guess is that Blake was too.

With the caveat that these will be tweaked in the days ahead to fix errors and reflect the playoff brackets, here's what I have. I may not be able to get to the fixing until next weekend due to looming deadlines.

I'm sorry that we were stretched to the max in terms of both readers and buzzers. I think I'll be more firm about sticking to 48 teams next year.

I am amenable into looking for separate sets for varsity and jv next year. I think it will be a challenge, but we can collectively see what we can do about finding a set that the majority of varsity has not yet heard.

Thank you everyone that helped with the tournament yesterday.
