Wright State University Rowdy Raider Invitational (12/5/09)

Wright State University would like to invite you to participate in the 4th Annual Rowdy Raider Invitational. This event will be held on the campus of Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio on Saturday, December 5th. We will use NAQT questions, and have been assigned IS-88.

All teams will be guaranteed 10 games. Depending upon field size, we will either do preliminary round robins, with re-seedings for playoff round robins, or morning swiss pairs, with re-seeding into an afternoon round robin.

We will likely cap the field at 32 due to restrictions on the number of rooms that I can get, therefore, we are initially limiting registration to 2 teams per school. We may open this up later based upon availability, but given that this event has had a waiting list the last two years, that may not happen.

Cost:
First Team: $60
Second Team: $50
Discount for a WORKING buzzer system: $10, limit the number of buzzers that you have teams

We will have on-line registration up within a week, but if you are interested in fielding a team, please post here or email me at david.jones AT wright DOT edu. We generally draw some of the best teams from Ohio and Kentucky, so this should be a solid field.

On-line registration is now available. We already have a very good field building, and would love to have additional out of state schools attend to complement our strong field from Ohio.

You may register by going to: http://www.wright.edu/cupa/rri/

Grayson (KY) is planning on sending two teams to this, but will need to go through our district's long list of procedures before registering.
When is the deadline for registration?

We are currently up to 19 teams, and I just sent my email blast out to our local teams. I have to put a cap at 32 given space and reader constraints, so I would say that if you enter in the next week or so, you should be OK. You might be OK after that, but I can't make any promises.

Bump with a field update- this is quickly developing into one of the better fields for a midwest event. I expect it to fill within a week, so if anyone is interested, please let me know ASAP.

Well, right now it looks like I'll be going to help coach Grayson Co., and I'm excited to head to Dayton in December. I've never been to Ohio (except for 10 minutes in the ghetto of Cincy trying to find the road back to N. Kentucky) and we're all looking forward to the trip. Anyway, I was wondering about what time are you expecting teams to be there, and also when you are hoping to be done?

We usually do registration from 8-8:45, with a short team meeting at 8:45 so that we can start play by 9.

We will do 5 rounds, then lunch, then a guaranteed 3 more rounds in the afternoon. That should take us to about 2:30 or 3. Then, the top 4 teams play for the championship, which should conclude no later than 4 or 4:15. So, depending upon performance in the afternoon playoffs, either 3 or 4:15 to be safe.

I am sorry to say that Grayson will not be able to attend this year.
Our coaches have decided that it is in our best interests to not go.
I am thoroughly disappointed, but look forward to the possibility going to next year.

Edit: Please do not remove us from the list, as of now.

It looks like me might be able to go after all.
We are trying to convince a member of our coaching staff that does not typically travel with us to go.
Please go ahead and hold our two spots.
I should know for sure within a week.

Edit: Grayson will be attending with two teams.

The final field is set for Rowdy Raider IV, and we now have a waiting list. I am holding firm at 32 teams, since we will use the NAQT nationals format of a card system for the prelims, which works best for me when I have 32 teams. The field is:

Adair County (KY)
Anthony Wayne (OH)
Copley (OH)
Danville (KY) (x2)
Dunbar (KY) (x2)
Fisher Catholic (OH)
Fleming County (KY)
Grayson County (KY) (x2)
Lousiville Eastern (KY)
MVCTC (OH)
Northmont (OH)
Olmsted Falls (OH) (x2)
St. Charles (OH) (x2)
Sidney (OH)
Simon Kenton (KY)
Solon (OH)
South Range (OH)
Sycamore (OH) (x2)
Tecumseh (OH) (x2)
Tippecanoe (OH) (x2)
Urbana (OH)
Walnut Hills (OH)
Whetstone (OH)(x2)

Waitlist:
Benjamin Logan (OH)
Northmont B (OH)
Greeneview (OH)
Russell A (KY)
Russell B (KY)

If you are no longer coming (or not bringing multiple teams), please let me know ASAP so I can get a waitlisted team in. Not showing up the day of the event will royally screw up the entire tournament, so don't do it!!!

Format:
Prelims- 5 matches. Using the card system, teams will play a team with the same record as them, leading to 16 teams with winning records and 16 teams with losing records

Round Robin Playoffs- Teams will be seeded 1-16 (and 17-32 for the consolation playoffs) based upon record and points per game, and will them be bracketed into 4 groups (1,8,9,16, etc.) where they will play a round robin (3 games). The 4 winners of the round robins will play either a single elimination tournament or a championship round robin (I haven't decided yet) to crown the tournament champion. (The same thing will happen in the consolation bracket).

Therefore, all teams will play 8 games, some will play 10-11.

Details with times and other info will be emailed to coaches this week.

So, is anyone else excited to see how this tournament will turn out?
It will be interesting to see how top level teams from Kentucky and Ohio compare.

If any teams are staying in the Homewood Suites would be interested in scrimmaging Friday night, Grayson would definitely be up for it.

Statistically speaking, Dunbar won't be at full strength
Edit: In fact, Harvard Fall was the first tournament this semester (and probably the only tournament this semester) where Dunbar was (will be) at full strength

I do think it'll be interesting to see how teams from the two states compare, but there are some big abscences from both states that leads me to believe that it won't be a true read on how each state stacks up against the other. But for fun comparisons, this tournament will be great.

Who will be missing?

Also, Scott, we're staying at the Red Roof Inn, if it's close enough, I'm sure I'd at least be up for a scrimmage.

That sounds good Jarret.
It will be nice to see what we are up against from the Ohio teams.

I know Sandy is not going, but I'm not sure who else.
It will be interesting to see how Grayson, Adair, Solon, Walnut Hills and Northmont will be able to handle a shorthanded Dunbar.
I know that they beat us by around 100 earlier this year without Brian and Victor.
Dunbar will no doubt still have a solid shot at winning the tournament even if a starter or two is missing.

As far as I know, all of the good Ohio teams (other than Ottawa Hills) are attending. At least the ones that play TU/B on a regular basis.

Your B team is pretty good at TU/B as well, but other than that, I agree with you. I assume that Nick was referring to a lack of Manual and a depleted Dunbar for Kentucky's end of things.
EDIT: changed the name of the guy from Grayson County

ANNOUNCEMENT: The Joe Wells Ghetto Open

What is it? Joe Wells, an assistant at Danville and former player at Garfield Heights, will be running an open scrimmage tournament at the Dayton Red Roof Inn on Friday Night, December the 4th.

Field: Seeing as we have two rooms with the possibility of a third, the field for this event will be capped at SIX teams.

Questions: TBD

Contact: If you are interested, post here and then hit me with an email or PM or something with a cell number for contact on Friday night.

Anything I miss?

You have no idea how honored I am to know that my event has spawned a Joe Wells Ghetto Open tournament. I am so proud!!!

We have an awesome field of teams and readers assembled for Saturday, so as long as teams don't lose their cards / take the wrong card, it should be a really good event. Luckily, Joe Wells is the only person there with a Garfield Heights education, so everyone should be able to count to 32.

If a third room can't be used at the Red Roof, the place where Grayson County is staying is just across the parking lot.

We could definitely use a room at Homewood; the rooms are very nice and roomy.
However, seeing that we are in South Central KY, we have a four hour drive.
I hope this will not keep us from competing; we would love the scrimmaging.

Can you tell us the "Field" so far?
I am guessing Grayson, Danville, and South Range for sure.

We also have a four hour drive. How many rooms are you guys getting at your hotel? If you we can use three, could we just hold the scrimmage tournament there?

So far the field is those three teams, with the possibility of Olmstead Falls. If we can't get enough "full" teams I'm sure we could play smaller teams. Doubles or triples or something.

We also have to jump forward an hour because of time zones (fun fact: my home in NE Grayson Co. is close enough to the line that my cell phone tells me it's an hour ahead of what time it is occasionally) so we probably won't be getting to the area until after 8 PM Dayton time. Seeing as Ohio is a big state and others have long drives too, we still shouldn't be much later than many of the others others.

That is nice to know.
We may be able to head out to Olive Garden and B-dubs before the scrimmage.

I think we could host the event.
I will have to check with our coaches.
We reserved 6 rooms, so coming up with three should not be a problem at all.
All of them are suites with tables and seating areas. (Don't you just love Hilton. )

It will be a nice miniature tournament; should be pretty even competition.
I know that South Range beat Danville (without Rachel) earlier this year at Tipp.
Danville narrowly beat our U of L team of two A and two B starters.
I will talk to Susan to see if Dunbar is interested; they probably will be since they are in the same hotel as us.
Our B team can play if we need a sixth team; they may not be as competitive, but it will be practice nonetheless.

As for the actual tournament field, it looks quite impressive.
I can already see around 14 teams that could make the top eight, although my knowledge of lesser known Ohio teams is limited.
It will definitely require a good day from Grayson, if we want to qualify.
Nonetheless, it will be a lot of fun and great practice, even if we do not.

Susan said that Dunbar would want to attend the scrimmage tournament if it was at our hotel.
We could actually accommodate more than six teams if there is interested.
Homewood has a few conference rooms that we could use in addition to the guest rooms.
Someone ask Joe to make sure he is okay with this.
Also, is around 9:30 Eastern a good starting time?

For info on the results, and tournament stats, check out this thread on the Ohio Quizbowl Forum.

Edit: Also, somebody forgot a dark colored zip-up jacket with yellowish markings on it in (I think) Room 399. I also believe it was a Blizzard brand. If this belongs to you or someone on your team then get ahold of David Jones and I'm sure he'll work something out with you.

A few observations from this tournament:

1) I thought the event was very well organized, and the hosts did an excellent job of making sure everything went smoothly. All of the moderators we came across were pretty good, and we really didn't have much problem throughout the day.

2) Dunbar B is fast. Very fast. Don't get me wrong, they're very knowledgable and good at quizbowl in general. But the biggest thing I noticed from them is that their reaction time to a clue they know is very quick. It seemed like every question saw one of our kids buzz just a split second after they did. Overall, I'm impressed with Dunbar's program from top to bottom, and whenever their A team shows up intact they will be scary good.

3) Luke Maupin is extremely good. He put up 130 points on our team yesterday, and that was the best performance I have ever seen. Adair County is a threat in Kentucky this year, and may very well be the best KY team not named Dunbar or Manual.

4) Grayson County has made a lot of improvement, but we have a long, long way to go. Part of this is my fault, because I didn't put my foot down hard enough in practice last year and make sure they would improve once I wasn't playing anymore. But I'm going to continue working with the players and coaches so we can get the program to the next level.

Overall, I thought it was a very good tournament and our team seemed to enjoy it. Some of them may only care to remember seeing Giant Jesus on 1-75, but for the most part I feel that our team learned a lot about where they are as a quizbowl team over the weekend, and I expect them to take the neccessary steps to improve to where they want to be.

Not to say that we weren't lucky a lot of the time, but the set itself was somewhat prone to buzzer races.

I did notice that. It didn't seem like it came down to who was more knowledgeable at certain points in a few packets. For the most part, it wasn't the case, but it wasn't what I expected from a NAQT set. Also, it seemed a bit heavy on trash, especially towards the end of packets. Overall though, it was a pretty enjoyable tournament. Definitely made me realize I need to study a lot more personally.

The questions were extremely Eiffel. Not many questions were gettable until the middle clues at best, IMO. I was kind of disappointed in the set.

I personally didn't notice a huge amount of buzzer races, not compared to other NAQT tournaments I've been to. I mean, NAQT tend to have more buzzer races than HSAPQ or house-written tournaments due to its shorter toss-ups.

The tournament felt like a miniature HSNCT to me (in a good way.)
The format was exactly what was needed for the amount of teams that were there.
However, it seems funny to see South Range and Danville in the consolation bracket.

As for the questions, I have never been fond of NAQT IS.
Against Dunbar B it seemed like every lit question was a buzzer race between Idrees, Helen, and I on the second or third line.
The were a very excellent group of sophomores nonetheless.
There also seemed to be an over-distribution of trash and current events.
The questions were definitely not the worst I have heard, though.

Edit: Changed name of Dunbar player.

Oh, that makes the loss a little less daunting.
She and Idrees were good players nonetheless.

I was not especially pleased with our performance as a whole, but was with our PPB.
I am happy to go from having one of the lowest ppb at U of L to having the 5th highest at Wright State.
