TJIAT (10/17/09)

This is an official announcement for Thomas Jefferson’s fall tournament, the TJIAT, on Saturday, October 17 2009. We will be ordering an HSAPQ set in ACF format and are hoping for 32 teams. TJIAT will also be a PACE NSC qualifier. The price will be $60 per team, with discounts for buzzers and moderators.

The format is probably going to involve bracketed round robins in the morning, lunch, and then some sort of playoff for the top sixteen teams as well as consolation rounds for the remaining ones.

Please keep in mind that the format and field size may be subject to change; more information will be available as we get closer to the tournament.

Any questions can be posted or emailed to [email protected]. Please register at http://activities.tjhsst.edu/quizbowl/tjiatreg.php.

So this means no opportunity for timed NAQT rounds in any Mid-Atlantic tournament during all of 2009-2010?

I assume somebody somewhere will host an NAQT tournament in the area. It just won't be TJ...

No, i specifically said "timed" rounds. These were the only ones we used all year that had 9 minute halves... in fact last year's posting about the competition specifically advertised that it was usually the only opportunity to play on the clock in these parts.

I was just wondering if anyone else was going to do it.

Regardless of there not being timed rounds, CR is still of course interested in this tournament, pending some date checks when the time gets closer.

RM had timed rounds last year, but we will not be hosting an NAQT tournament this season either.

I know that GDS is interested in hosting an NAQT tournament this fall. I'm not in charge anymore, but Matt Jackson and the rest of next year's team may be amicable to the idea of using clocks if they can find competent moderators.

Quote fixed to increase truth levels - our plans to hold a fall tournament didn't come through.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and we're expressing interest in this.

Out of curiosity, who's on TJ's A-team next year? And Seoup, are you the captain?

Not speaking for the team, I believe that A team next year is slated to be Stephen, Seoup, Diana, and Olivia, with Stephen as captain (though admittedly they've started adopting the "TJ B" moniker).

The A team for next year is not decided yet, but it will be some combination of Diana Gerr, Stephen Eltinge, Olivia Murton, Greyson Lewis, and myself. Captains have not been officially decided yet either.

I'll also express interest--it's earlier than we usually get started, but I think it would be good for us to go to.

Cool. I'll get around to that eventually, but certainly we'll be there with one team, hopefully two if i can get a parent to help us drive another 4 kids out here.

While specific information will have to come later, I will be sure to get a nonzero number of Whitman teams to this.

The more i talk to my kids about this, the more i realize that the probability of taking two teams is extremely low.

Apparently my kids have lives and want to enjoy Homecoming! Meh, go figure. Well, i'll see if i can scrounge up 4 random ones to go to this, but i'm not really feeling too optimistic.

"Fake" High School's attendance is dependent on the kindness of other teams- is there any team that will give me a lift down and back? I have a ride that can take me to where you are meeting, just not to Fairfax. [This is presuming you aren't meeting in Jersey or something.] Anyone out there who has an extra spot? [this means I will be playing alone even on the slim chance this works out]

With this tournament now about two weeks away, it'd be great if we could hear some more specific stuff from people who have only expressed interest. We have a decent field number as it is right now, and although we love it when local schools with smaller programs come to our tournaments, it would be really awesome if some of the stronger teams in the area (GDS, Gov, State College, Walter Johnson, etc) could come too.

EDIT: I didn't see the updated registration list

Haha some how we seem really really out of place on that list. But yes, we are interested, and our coach says we can most likely make it.

With two weeks to go, we're at 17 teams. Sign up at http://activities.tjhsst.edu/quizbowl/tjiatreg.php!

An update on the buzzer/moderator discounts: -$5 for the first buzzer set, and -$10 for each subsequent one. Moderators discounts will work the same way. The base price per team is still $60.

It's filling up nicely. A good field, like i expected.

Anyway, in case it wasn't clear before, we have buzzers to bring and myself to moderate, as always. I'd be very happy to help; i enjoyed it a lot last year at TJ (both times).

I may be speaking out of turn here, but Parkersburg High School may be bringing one team. Is it a problem if I grab a spot in the field for them and then let you know if they aren't going ASAP?

That's fine; just let us know when you know for sure.

With four slots still open, then, some more information: Registration will start at 8, and the tournament at 9. For format, we're planning on dividing the 32 teams into four brackets of 8, with each bracket playing a 7-game round robin. The top 2 teams from each bracket will be in the playoffs, divided into brackets of 4. A 3-game round robin and then a cross-bracket match will determine final rankings, though we may run semifinal and final games instead of the cross-bracket one if there's time. This format will be mirrored on each successive set of 8 teams, so all teams get to play 11 rounds.

Some combination of Maggie Walker students does intend to come. Dr. B. has been hesitant to register because people are being noncommittal, but I'm 99% certain at least 4 of us have confirmed that we can go. I'm emailing him about registering now; would you mind holding a spot?

Eeeek! I didn't realize that the field cap was approaching so fast. Only four, maybe three spots left?

GDS is definitely going to be sending at least 1 team to this tournament, with 2 teams being likely and 3 being a plausibility if the field isn't too full for that situation. Perhaps a raised field cap of 36 or 42 is workable if enough teams rush in trying to register late?

I don't know if it's possible to expand the field at this point, but we currently have 28 teams registered (possibly 30 if "Blake" and Parkersburg register), so we still have two more slots for GDS, WJ, or any other team(s) that wants to register. We'll probably set up a waiting list in case some people drop.
