There's no way this thing is going to happen. Let's officially start the contingency plans.

Hello, Everybody -- This is Fr. Ken Meehan at Gonzaga on Thursday afternoon -- I am contacting all of you individually, but saying now also, that we've postponed the Zigzag Tournament, and that we would like to re-schedule it for one of these three SUNDAYS where my Facilities-Reserver here now tells me all is clear for our use: February 21, March 7, March 28. All of these dates share a weekend with a tournament going on elsewhere on the Saturday. I would personally prefer February 21, since it shares the weekend with TJ's re-scheduled tournament on Saturday which, to my understanding, has a small enrollment of teams and would lose some schools that are taping the TV show then, plus TJ might want to come to ours since they won't be playing in their own. But Aidan and I will be looking at your responses here to see if the majority would prefer one of the Sundays in March. We will try to make a decision and announce it next week. Thanks for the ongoing interest and willingness to adjust from so many of you out there!

Since I'm sure the world rotates around what Wilson SHS thinks, we would prefer March 28. We would probably not be able to make the other 2 (although that would depend on other factors.)

February 21 would be the best for RM, but really any of the others would work too.

GDS would prefer the 21st (as I posted upthread) or the 7th.

The tournament is most definitely postponed, as Fr. Meehan said upthread, but we probably won't decide on a new date for a few days, just to make sure everyone, board-reading or not, gets a chance to voice an opinion.

The 21st is February is going to be really hard to us to get to. But March 7th or March 28th would be just fine.

WJ can't make any of the dates except for 3/28, so that's got my vote.

EDIT: correction 3/7 is actually sort of okay. We would skip RM and come to this if that were the date.

Father Meehan and Aidan,

Is it okay if I could come help read at this tournament if this ends up on March 28th? I will see if some other GMU people would like to come help as well read or scorekeep if that is fine with you guys.

I think we're cool on scorekeepers in any case, but yeah, if the date changes, we may need some more mods. Thanks for the offer; I'll let you know.

Though it is during our Spring Break, 3/28 works the best for TJ.

Not that we're in a hurry, but when can we expect to know the finalized new date? Apparently we're thinking of playing Yale on the 27th, but I'd stick around to play this if we settled on the 28th.

This is not official, but we are probably going with March 7th. This will be firmed-up, and more details will given about what to do to re-register, as soon as Fr. Meehan responds to the email I sent him yesterday.

ZIGZAG Rescheduled - 3/7/10

by Kouign Amann
Alright everybody, here we go:

This is the official re-announcemnt of ZIGZAG, to be held at Gonzaga College High School on Sunday, March 7th, 2010. Pretty much all relevant information stays the same. Please make sure you re-register, using the same method as before: email me with any questions, but be sure to email Fr. Meehan with your registration.

We regret that there didn't exist a date that could work for everyone, and we know our choice will prevent several teams from attending. However, we picked what we thought was the best date, considering all circumstances. We apologize for any inconvenience and hope to see many teams on the 7th.

NEW FIELD:
School - Teams - Buzzers - Staffers
CR - 1 - 1 - 1
Blair - 1 - 1 - 0
Quince Orchard - 1 - 1 - 0
TJ - 5 - 1 - 0
Howard - 1 - 1 - 0
Whitman - 1 - 2 - 0
Blake - 1 - 1 - 0
Wilson - 1 - 1 - 0
RM - 2 - 1 - 0
GDS - 2 - 0 - 0
Robinson - 1 - 1 - 1
Longfellow - 2 - 0 - 0
Mountain Vista - 1 - 0 - 0
Centennial - 1 - 1 - 0
Total: 21 - 11 - 2

So, this tournament is now a scant two weeks away. As much as I would enjoy the simplicity of organizing a quadruple round robin among the three teams currently registered, I don't think that would be very interesting for anyone involved.

So register.

But they would be really good games! Those are two very worthy competitors.

Or, I propose that we all play at the same time, in fact, a la It's Academic.

Or, yeah, more teams register, please.

This is a reminder that posting in this thread does not constitute registration. You must email Fr. Meehan to register, and he has not received an email from any of the three above schools. Please do so. This tournament is only a week away!

If the four teams promised above register, that will leave 15 teams. I would greatly prefer 16, so if you still want to come to this but haven't registered yet, please do so soon!

With the addition of GDS and RM, we are now at 16 teams. I haven't heard back yet from Centennial. If they do end up showing, that would give us 17, in which case I guess we'll just form a scab team for three brackets of six followed by crossover tiers of two. The same would happen if TJ's fifth team appears. If we stay at 16, I think we'll do two brackets of eight plus crossover of top three, middle three, and bottom two.

This sound good to people?

EDIT: Prepositions are cool.

Hey, this field is pretty rockin. There are going to be some great games this weekend. The best part is while i think we can all identify the top two teams at this tournament, the fight for positions 3 - 8 or 9 are totally up in the air, pending an upset here or there. And then even the teams you would say are at the "bottom" are all competitive and will also have some great matches. You never know what those TJ C and D teams, GDS B and C teams, and RM B team are going to do. They could surprise some people. I'm looking forward to this tournament about as much as any we've been to this year. It's going to be lots of fun.

Am i really the only person that volunteered to moderate though?

If anyone knows how to contact someone at Centennial, now would be a good time to tell me. They haven't responded to emails or forum posts.

So, we are currently at 20 teams, plus a possible 1 more from Centennial. We also have just enough buzzers to run this, but we have no extras in case of things going wrong.

I am open to advice as to how to schedule 20 or 21 teams in a way that doesn't suck. In fact, I would very much like some advice about this.

Anything more than 11 or 12 plus finals would probably be extremely unpopular with Fr. Meehan.

For 21, does 3 brackets of 7, then rebracketing with the top 2 from each bracket making it into the top playoff bracket work? That gives exactly 12 rounds plus finals.

I really wouldn't want to do this, but I just realized the following:

Fr. Meehan hasn't formally confirmed Longfellow's 2nd or TJ's 5th. However, I unofficially told both these teams a few days ago that they could come. How great of a faux pas would it be to tell those two teams that the field is closed and not let Centennial show up as well in order to preserve the field at the infinitely nicer 18? Again, I would feel really bad about doing this, but 20/21 is a pretty terrible number.

Well, the next nice number is 24, I believe. Four scab teams seems like a lot of scabs teams to make.

21 is not an awful number. If you run 3 pools of 7 for the prelims, you can do a 5 game playoff pool where the top 2 in each pool play a full round robin, or you could do a 6 game cross bracket where the top 3 teams in each pool play the top 3 in each other pool.
