Hey Fred, are you going to post individual ballots? Because I want to see what kind of great fool thought we even remotely deserved a vote.

I'm sure you guys are better than you're giving yourself credit for. I haven't had the opportunity to play you yet, Aidan, but you're stats do look really impressive.

Let me preface my statement by saying that I may have had the most interesting ballot.

Looking at these results, I see something way off:

8. Detroit Catholic Central, 255 points (best: 8th, worst: 14th)
18. Detroit Country Day, 113 points (best: 6th, 8 of 16 ballots)

Digging through the stats, DCC and DCD have played three times this year - UM Autumn (DCC 455-265), DCC Invitational (DCD 385-285), and Michigan NAQT State (DCD 380-325). While you may bluster about "NAQT produces strange results", the fact of the matter is that the evidence that we have on Detroit Country Day indicates that they are around the same level. At Michigan NAQT State, DCD had a Bonus Conversion of 23.22 to DCC's 21.89; at UM Autumn, it was DCD's 23.84 to DCC's 20.98. (The DCC invitational didn't have BC stats).

If DCC had been placed in the 20s, I could understand not ranking DCD. But eight of you believe that DCC is in the top 15 AND DCD is NOT in the top 25. (By the way, if you remove my 6th place vote for DCD - the other 7 ballots that voted for DCD averaged 13.5; that is, the average ranking was about 12.5) Just wanted to point this out.

Edit: Realized that this is a bit confrontational in tone. I apologize for that - I really do understand that it is difficult to rank 25 teams when most haven't even seen half.

Bryce, one factor that probably helped DCC place so much higher than DCD is that DCC travels a lot more and played a lot of the DC-area teams. Also, DCC has proven themselves on non-NAQT questions; while I don't have my information pulled up right now, I can't recall if DCD did anything like HSAPQ or NAQT alternatives.

But, I agree - one of my biggest criticisms of the poll is that "name" teams will get ranked higher than teams that are new to the national consciousness. DCD is quite good, though, no mistake about it.

What exactly do you mean by this? I don't see why you need to have stated that. It was his opinion, you shouldn't be criticizing it. He doesn't have to prove anything.

We didn't travel a lot that is true, but we aren't really the most capable team of travelling to where we want to when we want to. But I am really happy that we were given an opportunity to go to nationals this year.

BTW, we did play CC A twice early on the year in October and November with non NAQT questions. We lost both.

Once you get to the rankings below 25, it's just a matter of which teams people have heard of. So, I guess you're not popular enough.

And while I'm at it: what can I do to get the number of voters up? Are people not voting because their ballots will be revealed? We had 18 and 22 ballots for the first two of these I did (back in 2007), and since then we've gone down to 10 to 15.

Fly people out to WoQ. It was a mix of laziness/time constraints that kept me from doing the stat studies necessary to make a good poll, having only seen Illinois teams until now. Having been at HSNCT, I've got some pretty good ideas of who the top 25 are and would fill out a post-nats poll, if one is going to be held.

I think reducing the number of rankings to maybe 15 or 20 instead of 25 could help. Once you start getting down to those 20ish level teams, the picture is much less clear and much harder to sort out, perhaps discouraging voting.
