Kentucky NAQT

The University of Louisville will be hosting the Kentucky NAQT State Championships on April 18, 2009 on the Belknap (main) campus of the University of Louisville. We will have pool play or round robin matches in the morning and elimination rounds in the afternoon. I am still working on the cost, but will contact interested parties with the entry fee soon. We like to keep entry fees low, so more than likely, it may be $20 with discounts for buzzer system and moderator provision. The more self contained systems we can get the better. We are using the IS-85 question set
If you are interested in attending, please either reply to this thread or e-mail me at [email protected], or both. We look forward to seeing everyone on campus. Best of luck to all teams in Governors Cup

You can add one Grayson team to the list of interested teams.

Obviously this tournament will provide qualification for NAQT nationals. but are you seeking any PACE qualification?

State championships are automatically considered PACE qualifiers.

That's great. We're still trying to get the B team a bid for PACE

We (Manual) will participate. I will let you know how many teams as soon as possible, but it looks like 3 will be likely.

Hope everyone is doing well and congrats to everyone on another fine Governors Cup competition. Just a reminder that registrations for the Kentucky NAQT tournament are due by April 1st. I currently have registrations from Dunbar, Owensboro, and Simon Kenton and have committments from Manual, Eastern, Trinity, PRP, and Adair.
Apologies for the deadline, but space is at a premium on campus and the sooner I know the field the sooner I can reserve rooms. We are going to start at 930 AM on APril 18th, which hopefully will allow teams to drive in and avoid staying overnight in hotels. The fees are $15 per team and $10 for teams bringing buzzer systems or moderators.
Please let me know as soon as possible by sending an e-mail to [email protected]. Look forward to seeing everyone on the 18th and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me.

Henry Clay is interested in attending the Kentucky state tournament and our captain, Stephen Fritz, e-mailed the tournament director over spring break to find out information about the tournament but has not yet received a reply. If we could get any information from the tournament director that would be great and hopefully we will not be denied due to the registration deadline.

We would be happy to have Henry Clay attend. I actually have not received any e-mails from your captain. When you get a chance, e-mail me at [email protected] and I can send you the registration materials. I will need to know by Friday at 5:00 PM if you want to attend.

Hey dude,

I don't want to overstep my bounds here, but I would like to suggest that you don't do purely blind draws. This could result in things like the best two teams in the state playing each other, while another team gets a cakewalk of a schedule and finishes over at least one of those top teams.

^That has a tendency to happen at Governor's Cup with their blind draw.

Anyway, looks like an exciting field, and I've heard good things about the U of L tourney, so we are all looking forward to it. I really like how there is a wide selection of teams from across the state, which means that there is becoming quite a few of us in KY getting sold on NAQT style questions. Of course, the very chance to go to nationals is also a wonderful incentive for us at least.

Does anyone know who all of these teams have already qualified for nationals?

I think it's SK, MVNH, Manual, and Russel.
Is this right?

It will definitely be a battle for that guaranteed spot.
Henry Clay has a very good chance at getting it.
However, some other teams (Campbell, Ballard, Manual B, Danville, us: just to name a few) could possibly get it.

Good Luck to everyone that is competing!

Simulating Gov Cup State isn't really a good idea

I'm pretty sure Dunbar planned on attending this tournament or was there a registration error?

Hope everyone is doing well. Dunbar was registered, but has already qualified for NAQTs and is going to the PACE tournament in Richmond.

We didn't play them, but I think they had a pretty good day.
However, they got a hard draw (I think Dunbar) and were knocked out in the round of 16.

It was a very fun tournament.
Even though me missed national qualification by 35 points, I still had a good time.

I'd like to congratulate Dunbar and Manual, for both having two the best teams in the state!
It is amazing how good a school's b-team can be.

Well, even though we came sooooooo close yet so far from getting the 5th Nationals spot, I'm still proud to finish 6th in the preeminent "Quizbowl" competition in the State of Kentucky, and we're still going to apply for a wild-card bid to HSNCT, hoping and praying to get in.

Overall, this one of the most fun tournaments I've ever been to. The staff was friendly, the U of L campus was well suited to handle the tournament and all of the things that come with it, and the competition was very good. While the building got a bit too hot in the afternoon, I thought this tournament went off very well, and the people who ran the tournament did an excellent job dealing with an interesting situation of how to determine the 5th place spot.

I liked this tournament and am glad Grayson County came, and we hope to attend again. I'd like to compliment my own team on an excellent season, and also commend teams like Dunbar, Manual, Russell, and Simon Kenton who have played great quizbowl all season, and did so again today.

Thanks to everyone who came to the tournament on Saturday. It was a great day of competition and we were thrilled to have several schools competing for the first time at one of our tournaments. We happy to host the tournament and hope to see everyone next year. Also, if anyone is checking from Grayson or Edmondson, do consider applying for at large bids to NAQT. I have e-mailed info to coaches at both schools.

On a related note, the stats for the tournament are online on NAQT's site.

Have a great summer everyone.
