VCU Winter High School Tournament: December 13, 2008

by Matt Weiner
This is the general announcement for the first annual VCU Winter High School Tournament. This is a high school academic quizbowl tournament, to be operated by the quizbowl team at Virginia Commonwealth University, and held at The Collegiate School in Richmond, on Saturday, December 13 from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The tournament is open to any high school team that wishes to attend, though we do acknowledge that Cave Spring in Roanoke announced their tournament first, and encourage teams in that region to consider Cave Spring's tournament as well.

AFFILIATION: This tournament will seek affiliation with the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence and will be an opportunity to qualify for the National Scholastics Championship, which is run by PACE and will occur at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA on May 23 & 24, 2009.

QUESTIONS: The questions will be provided by High School Academic Pyramid Questions (hsapq.com). The question format will be modified PACE NSC style. This is a variation on the tossup/bonus format in which the match is divided into three phases, one with twenty-point related bonuses, one with fifteen-point bonuses whose category is chosen by the team that gets the tossup, and one with thirty-point bonuses.

LOCATION, DIRECTIONS, PARKING: The tournament will take place at the campus of Collegiate School. We will be meeting in the Memorial Hall cafeteria. Registration will begin at 8:30, and the first round will begin as soon as possible after that. Please arrive by 8:30 to guarantee that you do not miss the start of gameplay.

-You can use "103 North Mooreland Road" for your map software, or use the directions page linked above. Park in the school lot.

FORMAT: See below.

REGISTRATION AND FEES:
-The fee structure is as follows:
Base fee: $70 per team. There is no limit to the number of teams who can attend from one school.
Buzzer discount: $5 off school's total fee for each fully functional system (control box and eight activators all work)--no limit to # of systems you can bring
Staff discount: $15 off school's total fee. This could be a coach, parent, student who is not playing, etc. Team-provided staffers will keep score for various games not involving the team with which they are affiliated. Volunteer staffers must stay through all the games (except finals) in order to receive credit for their school. There is no limit to the number of staffers you can bring.
Minimum fee: The minimum fee is $0 (you can bring enough buzzers and staffers to eliminate your entire fee via discounts, but you cannot have a "negative fee.")
-To register, post in this thread or mail me at [email protected] with the number of teams, buzzers, and staffers you want to bring, and an email address where you can be contacted with details. Feel free to forward this announcement to any schools that you think would be interested in attending.

METHOD OF PAYMENT: To pay your registration fees for this tournament, please bring either cash, or a check (institutional or personal) made out to Andrew Alexander, who is the Quizbowl at VCU treasurer. Do not bring checks made out to Matt Weiner, to VCU, to "quizbowl," etc. We cannot use them. We strongly prefer not to deal with purchase orders, but if your school absolutely requires it, then you need to send us the paperwork no later than November 15 so that we can get it back in time for you to have a check written before the tournament. Contact me for details if you need to physically mail something to me or to Andrew.

DELINQUENT PAYMENT: Teams who do not pay on the morning of the tournament will be charged a $25 penalty and will have two weeks to pay their total amount before we start mailing letters to your school administration about it.

TEAM & ROSTER SIZE: There may be a maximum of six players on one team's roster, though only four may play at one time. There are two substitution opportunities in each game. Each player may appear on only one team's roster throughout the day--no switching from the B team to the A team, etc. Teams may also play shorthanded with only three players. Teams consisting of fewer than three players may not play without my express prior permission.

FOOD: Neither breakfast nor lunch will be provided by the tournament. We will provide a list of suggested eateries for the lunch break.

Post here or mail me if you have any further questions. I'm looking forward to seeing a wide variety of teams from Virginia and surrounding states on December 13.

We are also hosting the VCU Spring Tournament on February 21, and the VCU Season Finale Tournament on April 18. Please see http://www.hsquizbowl.org/vcuqb/hs.html for information on all high school tournaments hosted by VCU.

The location for this tournament has been confirmed as The Collegiate School. The Collegiate campus is about eight miles west of VCU. We still have many spots available for this event.

Hey, it looks like the field for this will consist of 10 teams, so we will simply do a round-robin over 9 rounds with ACF-format finals. The update for teams is going out right now.

Hey, Matt, hate to rain on your formatting parade, but we may end up unable to field a B Team. We aren't quite sure yet, though.

Matt, Sarah is unfortunately correct. We only have 1 team for Saturday. At least that puts you at an even number of teams, if I counted correctly.

just double checking, but I was under the impression Cosby had two teams (we definitely have 8 people), so the number is odd...

I was told to drop back to 1 team by Cosby's coach.

All participating schools should of course be aware that the limit on any team's roster is six people, so if a school is bringing eight people they must register a second team to have all of them play.

With the new eight-team field, the format will be a round-robin followed by a split into four-team playoff brackets, for a total of 10 games for all teams, concluding with ACF-format finals. Any ties for entrance into the top bracket or finals will be played off on games composed of one or two phases of an NSC-format match, as time dictates. Records will carry over from the round-robin into the playoffs to determine final standing.

Quick results:
1 MLWGS
2 Cosby
3 Freeman
4 New Kent A
I didn't here how the second bracket turned out, but the "Finals" match was actually a tiebreaker between Cosby and Freeman for the PACE bid.
Kevin won Prelim top scorer

Cosby beat Kevin? Wow... great job guys.

I'm wishing we went to this tournament now, but another trip to Richmond would have been rough...

Cosby had a former member of Gov A on it.

Does Cameron go to Cosby? I thought he was being homeschooled.

He is a part-time student at Cosby.

Cameron was not a member of "Gov A" when he attended. He was usually on the B team last year, though he might have been on A or C depending on who was available. However, he was on track to possibly be on our A team this year or next, depending on how things may have transpired. Cameron did not play for Cosby at GSAC last week since he wrote many of the questions, more than most of our own players, I might add.

I believe he said he was taking two classes at Cosby.

I will confirm this much in the interest of moving on. For the record, I do not plan on attending any pre-Nationals high school tournaments unless Cosby asks me to help out at NAQT States (whenever that may be) and we have not decided anything concerning Nationals.

Sorry about my part in the devolution. I was merely trying to correct minor errors of fact.

I can safely speak for our team in saying that we would love to see you at more future tournaments, as a player or otherwise.
