Duke University College Bowl is pleased to announce that we will host High School Celebrity Shoot on November 1, 2008.
All HSCS the questions are written - i.e. no buzzers. All the answers are names of real, famous people. There is an individual test, which determines the rankings for the shoot-out, a team round, a category relay, and the signature single-elimination, paired "shootout" where the top 64 students from the individual test are narrowed down to just 1 winner via several rounds of questions. Prizes will be awarded for top individuals, teams, and underclassmen (freshmen & sophomores).
Registration is $60 for the first team of four students ($40 if registered before October 18), and $5 for each additional student. If there are extra students not belonging to a team of 4, they may be combined into teams with extras from other schools. Coaches and chaperones are encouraged to compete as well; they will also be grouped into teams of 4. There is no charge for any coaches wishing to participate. Registration fee can be paid by cash or check (made out to Duke University College Bowl), and can be brought on the day of the tournament. To register, please email [email protected] and state how many teams & students you will be bringing.
This year's tournament location will be announced once room reservations are confirmed with the university.
Registration will take place from 9:00am-9:30am. The preliminary test and the team rounds will take place before lunch (approx. 12:30pm), and the category relays, bracket playoffs, and awards will be after lunch. The expected end time is 5:00pm.
Please email us any questions or to register. Updates will be e-mailed to registered teams as well as posted at our webstie: http://www.duke.edu/web/quizbowl/

To explain, Cobra Kings is an alias for a NC team that did not get sanction to play as its official name. Hopefully future installments of that group will be associated with their true name.

Re: High School Celebrity Shoot - 11/1/08 @ Duke
Sorry about that, I'd like to explain that a little bit further. Cobra Kings is Hoggard, but School Policy mandates that in order to represent the school we have to use school transportation (i.e. a bus) and have a school representative chaperone us. Because of the corresponding cost increase for renting a bus, as well as working around the busy schedules of faculty members, we'd only be able to go to one or two tournaments this year, and end up paying about $300 per tournament instead of the usual $60-70. Instead we worked out a deal with the principal that has Hoggard competing in local things, (KMO's etc) and Cobra Kings (who are not representing Hoggard) traveling to away tournaments. I'm sorry for any trouble or confusion this might have caused, but we didn't see any other option that would let us go to more than just 1 or 2 competitions

Yea, educational bureaucracy. Raise the charter cap!SpauldingQB wrote:...School Policy mandates that in order to represent the school we have to use school transportation (i.e. a bus) and have a school representative chaperone us.
At least the students are innovative enough to subvert the educrats. Power to the Cobra Kings. You guys need cool jackets.
