Cedar Shoals JV Jag Bowl (Athens GA) 11-8-8

Post by CSQuizJags »

The CSHS Academic Team announces the 2008 edition of the JV Jaguar Bowl, to be held Nov 8, 2008, in Athens GA. This tournament is open to any school with players in grades 10 and under. Middle Schools are also welcome to participate, but may not necessarily be put into their own division (unless the numbers allow for a separate MS tournament). We will be using NAQT IS set 78-A. Teams will be placed randomly into divisions (making sure A, B and subsequent teams are kept separate) and play five prelim rounds. The top 16 (or more, depending on the field) teams will move on to a single elimination tournament. Questions will consist of 18 toss-ups and two part bounceback bonuses. In a departure from previous JV Jags, we will not have a worksheet round this time (with the coach teaching three different classes this semester, two of which are new to him, he has no time to create them). Playoffs rounds will be 18 TU and three part bounceback bonuses. Award plaques will be awarded to the top three teams.

We are working with our Chick-fil-A right around the corner to create boxed lunches that teams may order and eat at the school. This is optional and there are several lunch choices within a mile of the school. We will send more information on this once we talk to CFA (around late September).

The entry fee is $70 per team with a -$5 discount (limit two) if a school brings a reader/worker to help out (this person may be a parent or an upperclassman and every effort will be made to make sure they do not read in their school's division).

At this time, we do not have a cap on the number of teams, but we may place it around 36-42 once we get a better idea of how many readers we have coming.

If you need lodging or wish to view the food options, please visit the team website listed below. If you have any questions, please feel free to email the team at [email protected]

Thanks and we hope to see your team in the home city of the pre season #1 FOOTBALL TEAM IN THE NATION!!! (Patent Pending) :)

I'm afraid we don't have the resources to travel to Baton Rouge.

Well played Chad, but you do know LSU plays App State tomorrow. Can (figurative) lightning strike twice?*

Update...this tournament will now use 78A. Walton will use 80A. This should clear things up.

It's disappointing that this will be using 78A, as we saw that at Alabama, but I guess most teams aren't in our situation (JV and Varsity overlapping).

Sorry to disappoint, but we were happy to work with Walton to get things cleared up (and to let my teams play the WAC!)

There's been a small field update. See above for more detail.

I dont think I said this...

Five players can play at one time on a team. If there are only four buzzers, two players may share.

Norcross seems to be no longer on the list. I should go write an angry e-mail to my coach, but I'm 98% sure there was a miscommunication somewhere, more than likely on my/our end.

I can't garuntee that the coach will check her e-mail on a day off school if we can get a day or two if leniency. Thanks

Lakeside seemed to be a half step ahead of the other good teams in the field. It will be difficult for anyone to stop them in AAAA state.

FWIW, the driver for the RGNS activity bus cancelled at the last minute, forcing us to scramble for parent and coach drivers and leave 45 minutes later than planned. We forfeited the first round and ran in to sit down and immediately start competing in our second, leading to a loss later results indicated was likely anomalous. The A squad averaged solid scores (220+) in their next two victories and led Central going into the final question before losing to close out the prelims, so I feel like the team played true to their ability in winning a hard fought playoff match over #4 Flowery Branch.

I was very proud of my team for winning 8 straight games before losing to Lakeside in the finals. They have worked really hard this year and it paid off. Lakeside is definitely a little better than our team at this point, but I feel that we can give them a much closer game than the 275-150 loss that we had in the finals. My students were so excited to just be in the finals that they could barely focus for the first 5 questions or so; we were down 110-0 after the first six questions, before my kids started to get into the game.

Forfeited the first round?

In Division B, the Rabun Gap Team was allowed to play round one even though everyone else was ready to start round two. This delayed the whole division a half hour for the day.

Rabun Gap B was lead to the wrong room by a student volunteer and told to begin play. I was with Rabun Gap A in the adjoining room playing Round 2. Someone played RGNS B in place of RGNS A. RGNS B was then sent to their true second round assignment where they played only the final five questions against Lakeside. RGNS B was essentially forced to forfeit Round 2 and played a tougher opponent (one of the Chattahoochee teams) in place of their intended Round 1 opponent.
