From some set last year (house written I believe, perhaps a Maryland tournament and Henry might know):

A tossup's first sentence mentioned that he was born to Hasidic Jews in Belarus and studied art.

Buzz!

Hitler

We stopped and laughed for a few minutes. Then we discussed why the Freshman Method of buzzing is not a good idea.

(The answer was Marc Chagall.)

At HSNCT (I think), I gave "shattering the backboard" for "being drafted out of high school". The second clue (the clue I buzzed on) was about noted short guy Sebastian Telfair.

This was an IS set last spring; I remember because I did the same thing when playing the round for laughs with some other staffers just before it was read to teams.

Resurrecting due to an amusing neg at practice today on an '02 IS set (32, I think):
Question: something about it being treason for anyone but a sultan to own one
My teammate: Mamluks?
Correct: Elephants
The next clue involved the first domestication of them.

A gem I had from New Trier Solo's finals last year:

Wrong: My Grandfather's Son (by Clarence Thomas)
Right: Black Boy (by Richard Wright)

What makes this especially bad was that it came after the clues "hanged a kitten" and "joined the Communist party"

On Tuesday, playing MCMNT 2008, the one freshman we've recruited so far made his first collegiate practice buzz.

Wrong: Dalai Lama
Right: John Roberts

Luckily this came just before "Fred Thompson" and not after.

If you're going to have a memorable first buzz, it might as well be a bad neg. That said, he seems eager to have fun and learn stuff, so I predict he will be making much better buzzes soon (in all senses of the word "better").

In middle school practice today:

Answer given: Melanoma
Correct Answer: Melatonin

The question asked for a neurotransmitter secreted by the pineal gland. I was somewhat impressed that a 7th grader sort of knew what he was talking about, but the idea of a cancer-secreting gland amused me.

During EFT, I negged with "Jedi Council" for "Lutwaffe" at some point in the question were it had almost certainly established that it the answer was something involving Germany. It ruled. I think Evan also negged with "Tie Fighters" for "Sentinels" after a clue about them gaining the ability to teleport after flying into the sun.

Moderator said: "Four Feet, Thirty-Three Inches"
