It was a category round: "Things Beginning With the Letter F." The first line mentioned the series being imported from Japan, and I guess they just guessed.

Not a neg, but still kind of painful when it happened.

At practice, one of our players answered Sudan, and got power on it. Then he said:

"I knew it was Sudan because I knew it had to be in the Middle East."

Mind you, his definition of Middle East is the normal definition, he just thought that Sudan was in Asia.

This woman, who was born in 1891, was the first lady (buzz)

My guess: Jacqueline Kennedy
Answer: Onassis

Almost: what N university had "Win one for the Gipper", team was going to say Northwestern  , but pulled out Notre Dame at last second.

Your guess was Onassis, to which I immediately responded that Aristotle Onassis was not a woman.

Swaziland actually tried that for a while not too long ago. I remember that, at some point during that period, the king got married, breaking the vow of chastity and forcing himself to fine himself one (1) cow.

I would not look too much into, Ian. The person who got the neg was rather green, since he has only been coming to practice for a few weeks or so. Also, he buzzed in/around the first line, I think, so he did not have much to go off of, so there was likely not much to justify his answer (almost certainly not, in fact).

Since the WoQ mirror has finally passed, I am free to post this one, probably the best neg I've been present for all year.
Given: Bilbo Baggins's Birthday Party
Correct: Field of the Golden Cloth
Off the opening clue "Fireworks in the shape of a dragon distracted participants at this event."

The worst part about the whole thing is that, when my teammate buzzed, his answer was completely correct. Still, there was solid laughter in the room for about a minute afterward.

I mean, it seems fairly reasonable to buzz in before the word "procession" (I certainly would have). I probably would have weighed whether it was crazier to have a tossup on Bilbo's party, or to have a tossup on the Field of the Cloth of Gold at a high school tournament. I think I would have negged with Bilbo. In any case, it's amusing but hardly a bad neg. Consequently, I recommend that tossup author George Stevens switches from being a history player to being a lord of the rings player.

I'll admit, the tossup was probably too difficult, but I certainly heard a few tossups on it as high schooler (including a memorable buzz of mine which won the game at some tournament at Vandy).
