No Name Tournament 2008: Very Preliminary Announcement

Post by cdcarter »

I announced this at PACE so I will announce it here as well. This summer, along with my trusty co-editor Ian Eppler of GDS, and a slew of contributors whom I love, I am writing and editing a high school tournament. It will be at the IS+ level that we all love, it is using the MUT distribution, and it will be showing its head in October/November of next year. The date(s) will be announced when we have all our sites lined up and ready to go.

There will be about 5 sites hosting, scattered about the country, including Minneapolis South, GDS, and Notre Dame, with the rest being announced later.

If you would like to contribute, please do! My email is [email protected], and people who intend to play the tournament are totally free to contribute for a discount on registration, and other contributors will receive compensation as well.

Hope to see you sometime next fall!

Edit: Corrected blatant barbarism —Mgmt.

I really really hope someone in Illinois can mirror this. I'm assuming you'll have more than 9 rounds total? (Illinois needs to start running more long tournaments.)

The original plan was to write 12 packets, but with the additional contributors, we will probably end up with around 15 rounds. If you have any questions, email Chris or me. My email is [email protected].

Someone in the south (hint Georgia or Alabama) should mirror this.

Oh also, if you happen to know someone who likes editing science, or hosting mirrors of this tournament, have them email me. [email protected]

Brad, consider either the Notre Dame or Minnesota mirrors.

I may be interested in mirroring this tournament at Clemson University (in upstate South Carolina) sometime next year.

Out-of-state HS tournaments haven't really caught on in Illinois yet. There's two that receive any turnout at all, really - Culver's Midwest Championship got New Trier and Loyola last year and nobody this year, and WashU's tournament got Auburn, Carbondale, New Trier, and Loyola this year (although bad weather stopped NT and Loyola, IIRC) The teams that would/do make the extra effort to play these questions probably would, but the rest of the state won't go.

It made me a little sad when I read a Dorman player's remark that less than 1/4 of their 200+ games were within a 3 hour drive; Illinois teams usually don't have to drive 3 hours round trip for a tournament, and so nearly all of the non-elite teams won't even bother.

I'm going to talk to some of my teammates and see if they'd be interested in running a NY/NJ mirror of this tournament. This would be good because
1. There a lot of teams in the NY/NJ so turnout wouldn't be an issue
2. Teams from the area that sometimes travel down to the DC area, like Hunter, Stuy or Seton Hall would save a lot of money with gas being so expensive.

Of course this is all speculative....

Do you still need a science editor?

The news I can provide:
1. A certain cdcarter is a superhero and is writing his stuff.
2. Siva, I was already rejected for the task, so my guess is yes. (It's understandable: I think his science editor is SHANTANU JHAAAAAAA.)
3. There will be packets contributed, at the very least, by me and/or me and Ted. Also other people.

EDIT to include content
