The Quizbowl Resource Center

The Academic Competition Club at the University of Virginia will be hosting its annual Cavalier Classic on October 25th 2008. The Cavalier Classic this year will run on HSAPQ ACF Set #2. This a preliminary announcement and more will follow as we get closer to the fall.

Ok, ok, that's quite a bit of an exaggeration, but I welcome the fact that Will Butler has stepped up to duly notify teams instead of avoiding the boards like the plague...

Will, can you send me an email or something and let me know some contact info for you or the UVA team? I'll be in law school there this fall, and while I doubt I'll play much -- if at all -- I'd certainly be interested in helping y'all out with reading and stuff.

Will you be using the same questions as Vanderbilt?

While in the past we have done a swap with Vanderbilt, so far this year nobody has proposed to do that. However, if Vanderbilt would like to do a swap, it probably be in UVA's best interest to do it.

When do you think that you will know one way or the other? I have to get a tournament schedule to the administration pretty soon, and we'd like to be able to attend both tournaments if possible.

Mr. Huff, your question is one that I have as well. I'm doing my best to stay away from decision making and such from now on, but I'll mention to Jack that he should figure out what to do on the questions front (he had been in Egypt or something crazy for a while recently). Will, are you the best contact at UVa for this?

Any idea whether or not you'll be seeking PACE affiliation, Will? I can't remember if this tournament was a qualifier last year...

Awesome. Thanks, Will. We only have 2 full teams set at the moment, but hopefully we'll be able to bring several.

Note that there has been a change. This year instead of doing the Cavalier Classic as a house written set, we will be using HSAPQ
ACF Set #2. This is a different set than what is being used at UMD. To register please email me at [email protected]

Wait -- Doesn't the second HSAPQ set come out on November 1st?

The ACF-2 set is being produced early to accommodate this tournament.

Sadly, we can't attend due to a taping for "It's Academic". I'm not sure how many other DC-area teams that affects on this date...

So... will there be a formal announcement for this? James Monroe will likely come, but my coach hasn't received any responses to his emails about information on this tournament.

WJ will attend if the price isn't anything ridiculous.

I will post a field update tomorrow. At the moment it is looking like we will have registration between 8:30 and 9 in Wilson 402(A map is here http://www.virginia.edu/webmap/ACentralGrounds.html)
Price breakdown:
$80: first team
$60: each additional team
-$10 buzzer discount (each, limit 2)
-$40 moderator discount
-$5 Returner's Discount: Have sent at least one team to a tournament that UVA has hosted in the past calendar year.
-$20 New Team Discount: Have not sent any teams to any non-TV, non-VHSL tournament in the past 2 years.

Minimum fee: $40/team
To register just email me.

What time should the tournament end?

Hopefully between 5 and 6.

Fairfax HS competed in the previous three Cavalier Classics, but this year we were inadvertently left out of the contact loop for the October tournament. Having said that, is there still any slots open for our team next Saturday?........please let us know asap.

Sorry about that, and yes there are still plenty of spots.

I don't know if my coach has contacted you about this yet, but James Monroe will most definitely be at this with one team and most likely one buzzer set.

What will the prelims/playoff format be, and will there be consolation rounds for teams that don't make playoffs?

Hey can I have a field update before I register? I am pretty sure we'll make it, but I have to first convince my coach.

TJ will be there with 4 teams.

I'm not sure if Dr. B. has registered yet, but we're bringing two teams. Quint is expected to make his season debut, for those who were looking for him at RM and TJ.

This is not set in stone yet. I would like to have consolation rounds and there probably will be.

Auburn HS is definitely brining just 1 team and 2 buzzers. We might have a moderator to bring. I will let you know ASAP if we do.

This Saturday many of our seniors cannot attend because early applications for college are due next week. Therefore our B and C teams are more like our C and D teams. Please keep this in mind when bracketing our teams.

To add on to this, they also seem very disciplined (through two games) as they have only two negs.

I see Gonzaga's putting up some pretty crazy numbers, too.

I mean, Gonzaga's certainly a good team, but they're putting up like four and a half fewer points per bonus than MW and WJ.

Yeah, they're clearly in the second tier here in terms of bonus conversion. It just seems that that Dan Puma kid likes getting fourteen tossups a game.
