Post by SHP Pirate »

Just bumping this thread up ...

Seton Hall Preparatory is pleased to announce that it will be hosting its “Pirate Open” on Saturday, April 5, 2008 on the campus of Seton Hall Preparatory School in West Orange, NJ. This tournament will be using NAQT set 75A and will be utilizing modified NAQT rules. (Untimed – 20 question rounds.)

Seton Hall Preparatory School is conveniently located off Route 280 in West Orange, NJ, just minutes from Route 287, the Garden State Parkway, and the New Jersey Turnpike.

The fee structure is as follows:

Base fee: $80
Each additional team: $60
Buzzer Discount: -$10 per working system
Experienced Moderator Discount: -$10

(Minimum fee per team: $50)

Tentatively, the field will be capped at 32 teams.

Registration will be from 8:00-8:45. Breakfast will be provided. First round will begin at 9:00.

The final format of the tournament will be determined by the number of registered teams. As this is a late-season event, we will strive to maximize the number of games played by each team.

Is it too late to get in on this? I need to check with my team, and see if we can get a driver, so can I get you a definite answer as to if we will do it by Monday?

Bloomfield cannot attend because APPARENTLY out administration wants two weeks of notice before we can go anywhere.

go without administration approval... Get a team of 4 with 1 parent driving. The school doesn't know about half the tournaments we go to.

Bloomfield ... if you would like to come as an "independent" group ... that is fine. You just need to have an adult chaperone. Let me know.

I would do it in a heartbeat, however it would need to be without my advisor knowing since she's totally against doing that/could lose her job for that. If I could get the registration fee, my A team, and some chaperone together I would do it though.

EDIT: Basically my obstacle is registration payment. And making sure my school NEVER knows a team of ours attended. And what would the requirements of the chaperone be (Age, relation to team). And lastly, could we participate as a team NOT named Bloomfield.

As to Hunter ... no, I have not yet received an e-mail. Please have someone e-mail me as soon as you are able.

As to Bloomfield ... I understand your plight. Whatever you decide to do, just let me know. (If you would like to discuss this further, e-mail me off the board.)

Yeah....Bergen has a horrible administration and goes to half its tournaments independently ( LIFT, Hunter, Temple, to name a few). We just get parents to drive, there usually okay with that (the philly one not as easy). As to your advisor losing her job, that's complete nonsense. She has nothing to do with you guys going to a tournament on your own so she has no liability.

And West Orange is about 5 miles from Bloomfield, so you should easily find a way to get there.

If I bring a team its 2 Seniors and 2 Juniors, 2, 18, and 2, 17. Does that require a chaperone or can we just show up?

Bloomfield ... just show up. I assume that, due to the "unofficial" status of your team, you will not be bringing any buzzers, correct?

Just let them know you will be holding an unofficial 48-hour practice over the weekend. Use that to get an excuse to be absent on Monday (too tired)...

No, unfortunately I could not gather enough support from teammates. They were too exhausted after Yale, and so don't want to do another one this weekend. I really wish we could go.

Byram Hills will be bringing one team. Can we still bring two buzzer sets for $20 off, or are we limited to one because we're only bringing one team? Also, when do you expect the tournament to run until? Thanks!

Okay ... as of Monday evening, the field is shaping up. (See updated list above.) At this point, assuming 14 teams, I am planning on running two round-robin brackets of 7. (six prelim. rounds.) Then, a top-eight single elimination playoff. I am still waiting for confirmations from a number of teams who have e-mailed me about registration. I will hold-off with final details for another day or two.

Regardless of the final field, we will still be holding registration/breakfast from 8-8:45 with rounds beginning at 9.

On Saturday, I will have lists/directions to local eateries for lunch. Several are walkable (Northfield Deli, Munchies, Subway, Johnny's Pizza) while there are numerous other choices within a five minute drive. (St. Cloud Deli, several Chinese restaurants, Panera, Subway, TGIFridays, Wendy's, Pal's Cabin, Eagle Rock Diner, etc.) Of course, if you would like to order pizzas, I will give you those telephone numbers as well.

Assuming that the questions arrive before Friday, each team will be taking home a full clean set of all the rounds.

This was an incredibly well run tournament and Byram Hills had a lot of fun. Everything was well organized and the competition was great. Expect to see us at many more NAQT events in the future! I personally prefer NAQT to :chip: and will definitely push for the hybridization of the Byram Hills team.

Unfortunately, the shift won't be as fast as both of us would like. My coach still is in love with :chip: and I suspect we'll always be a primarily NAC team. That being said, both New Rochelle and Byram Hills had a blast and now know what some of the real competition is like. We both intend to bring teams to the NYS Championships in May and are even discussing hosting a joint NAQT tournament between the two schools next year (probably one school hosting, the other school running it). Hopefully, things like that could encourage more teams to make a switch (or hybridization) like us. I'm a born again quizbowler!

I should have them up tonight. I am having a bit of trouble using SQBS to post online. If I can not get it to work, I will manually post the full results here later this evening. Also, I will be sending a full set of results to Bykowski this week for national rankings.
