CAT II (5/17/08) at Chatham High School (NJ)

Post by ChathamNJ »

Chatham High School will host our 2nd annual tournament on Saturday, May 17. Nestled snugly between the end of AP exams and Memorial Day weekend, this will be a great opportunity for teams to have one last quizbowl tournament before the end of the year or the national championship of their choice. We will use NAQT IS-72.

Our format tries to find something for everyone:
- Each school may opt to enter one team into the Premier Division, with a full morning of competition against like-minded teams. This is an excellent opportunity to prepare for HSNCT or PACE NSC. Premier teams will automatically advance to the playoffs.
- Most teams will enter the Main Division. Top teams from the prelims will advance to the same playoffs and have the opportunity to challenge the Premier teams.
- If interest is strong enough, we will have a Freshman Division. These teams will have easier questions (either Speed Check or watered-down IS questions) but will not advance to the playoffs.
- Non-playoff teams are invited to play in our Jeopardy-style trash rounds, written in-house. Teams that lose early in the playoffs are also welcome to play as many rounds as time allows.

The cost to enter is $80 for a school's first team, $50 for each additional team, with a $10 discount per buzzer set.
Coaches who volunteer to read games involving their own teams will be given a free clean set of the questions (including unused rounds).

Some FAQs:

Didn't you do this last year?
Yes, we had to scrap the Freshman Division last year but the Premier/Main split seemed to be a successful one. I think a couple teams went Premier that regretted that decision, so we'll see what happens this time around.

How many rounds will be played
Last year we had six prelim rounds and a 16-team single-elimination playoff bracket. We had three trash rounds. This year looks to be similar.

What time will it begin/end?
We're beginning registration and bagels at 8:00, and the first round should start by 9:00. Last year we were done around 4:30.

Sounds great! How do I sign up?
E-mail me at sfineman AT chatham HYPHEN nj DOT org. I'll send you the registration form and we'll take it from there.

Bloomfield will most likely attend. 2 Main Division teams probably. (Maybe 2 Main, 1 Freshman).

Bergen will send a bunch of teams, one premier and probably 2-3 main division teams. I will email you shortly.

Thank you to both Bloomfield and Bergen, I've recorded your entries here but please make sure to have your advisor send in the form so that everything is official. No hurry, I just wanted to let everyone know that we're using this board for unofficial information only.

May I ask what the question marks stand for?

Either if it means my advisor hasn't sent the registration in yet or why we're in Main I guess?

Choice #1 is correct - I know you've mentioned it on here but I haven't received anything official. For some reason I wrote the word "tentative" for MAST instead.

There's plenty of time and no reason to hurry, but a gentle nudge for your advisor couldn't hurt.

I probably will be nudging, yes.

By the way, is the trash tournament at lunch or during the playoffs? And could a school enter a team that didn't play at all in the preliminaries? (I ask because the majority of my non serious players who don't play A or B team have been pestering me about this trash tournament since I described it to them).

The trash rounds will be during the playoffs - any team that makes the playoffs is welcome to join in as soon as they lose. Last year we had several teams get tired and leave before the trash was over, so we'll probably make that official and schedule trash opponents on a round-by-round basis rather than trying to prepare a spreadsheet.

As far as extra teams for trash only, I'd have to discourage that just because it would require extra staff that we probably won't have.

BUT

You're certainly welcome to change team rosters for the trash rounds. So you could have your extra players as spectators during the academic tournament, then have them jump in for the trash - and if we have rooms and staff, they might be able to have extra teams too.

Bummer. Not quite sure what the second sentence means (am I old and out of touch?), but I do understand the multiple pulls on our schedules - work/life balance is just hard and we can't get everything we want.

You're still welcome to come with parent supervision if your school allows it.

Yeah Bloomfield, you really should attend (it is the last tournament). Bergen will be coming with parent chaperones rather than our advisor, and you live so close to Chatham that it shouldn't be that big of an issue. And I want to meet the mysterious CzarMan as well......

CzarMan, you're welcome to come join us - I think we have enough readers already but I know we definitely need scorekeepers so you'll definitely get to hear or read questions. Please arrive around 8, I'll tell the check-in table to look out for you and send you to headquarters.

gild the lily
1. To adorn unnecessarily something already beautiful.
2. To make superfluous additions to what is already complete.

"Gild the lily" is a famous misquotation. The actual quote from Hamlet is "To gild refined gold, to paint the lily..."

BCA was beating Delbarton 225 to -5 when I left, so I assume they won the championship. In the Trash tournament, MAST A won with 1760 points, and my team consisting of me, myself, and I came in 2nd with 1560. Wish there had been a Championship game for it, would have been fun.

Great tournament, everything ran smoothly, and it was fun reading questions to the youngn's.

Bergen did win, beating Delbarton 380-115 in the finals. East Brunswick and Sparta both lost in the semis. I guess eventually Mr. Fineman will post the full results.

Overall, it was a well run tournament, no major problems and a fun way to close off the year.

For those keeping score at home, I have bits and pieces of the playoff results. Some games I only know the outcome, not the score, others I don't know the winner or score.

Round 16
1 Bergen A def 16 Eastern Christian 645-20
2 East Brunswick def 15 Livingston B
3 Delbarton def 14 JFK
4 Sparta def 13 Pingry B
5 Millburn A def 12 Mountain Lakes A
? 6 Livingston A vs 11 MAST A
? 7 Pingry vs 10 Newark Academy
9 East Brunswick B def 8 Monsignor Donovan

Quarter Finals
1 Bergen A def 9 East Brunswick B 480-130
2 East Brunswick def winner of Pingry vs Newark Academy
3 Delbarton def winner of Livingston A vs MAST A
4 Sparta def 5 Millburn A 290-95 or something close to that

Semi Finals
1 Bergen A def 4 Sparta 300-265
3 Delbarton def 2 East Brunswick A 310-240

Finals
1 Bergen A def Delbarton 380-115

I don't think there was a 3rd/4th consolation game.....

Could one of the people who reads these boards obsessively please post the URL of the site where I can post full results? I've looked a little bit but I know it's out there somewhere and people seem quick to respond. I should have full prelim SQBS results and playoff scores for everyone this afternoon.
