Interest in Fall Tournament at Penn?

Post by Lapego1 »

Hi, everyone. I know it's early, but I just want to gauge some interest so we can start planning. Assuming there are no other conflicts and considering basically the distance alone, do you think your team would be interested in playing in a house-written (or NAQT) high school tournament at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia? It would be some time between September and November to give us enough turnaround time to prepare for January's Penn Bowl. Feel free to suggest a date good for you, as I'm not aware of the annual slate of events in this area. If it's house-written, the difficulty would be roughly that of GSAC/TJ Spring or other equivalent house-written tournaments (that is, challenging for the upper tier of teams but still mostly gettable by beginning teams) and the format would be standard 20 tossup-bonus.

I'm hoping some of the Maryland/DC area teams would be able to make the trek, in addition to teams from Pennsylvania and the surrounding area. If you're a senior and want to get a look around Penn, then that would give you a good opportunity. The campus is easily accessible from I-95 and there are several good hotels both on campus and in the surrounding area. I know it's 4 hours from Richmond driving at the speed limit (maybe slightly beyond), so that translates to maybe 2 hours or so from DC. On a side note, if anyone has a contact list for Pennsylvania/Delaware/New Jersey teams within a 2 hour radius of Philly, let me know. With enough support, this can become an annual tournament for the area.

Thanks,
Mehdi Razvi

You've come to the right place for a contact list. Email charterquiz at gmail dot com. (With the warning that pretty much the only DE team that goes out of state is us.)

We had an impromptu schedule discussion and Charter hopes to attend Princeton and Harvard next fall. So any effort on your part to avoid their weekends would be appreciated. November was really free for us in '07, but who knows what the dates will be next time around. Charter's tournament is probably 12/13.

Either NAQT or house-written is fine, again if possible avoiding Princeton's NAQT set.

Seton Hall Prep would also be very interested. Send me an e-mail and I will give you a list of other NJ teams who might be willing to travel.

Definite interest. Actual attendance may not occur if players are unavailable on that date or there is another event closer.

I always prefer housewritten tournaments, but either way we'd be interested to attend.

mehdi, i will follow you to the ends of the earth (if we have the money - sort of depends on us winning TV show). but i think that a lot of next year's presumed a team would want to go.

We should be able to make it just fine, assuming it doesn't conflict with any of the big tournaments up here (LIFT, mainly).

We'd want to go if Dr. B. agrees...between the TV show and Cameron and I's experimental tournament we should make enough money for an extra overnighter next year.

Hey Mehdi, what's the deal with Joanna. Is she still doing quizbowl? Either way the two of you should totally pull an Angela and come to PACE nationals!

Eh, well, I'll be at PACE to staff. It fits pretty well between the year I'll spend doing organic chem and summer I spend doing more. You'll have to get on Joanna's case. She and Angela are pretty much the same thing.

Yes, Bergen Academies would probably be interested. Probably (hopefully) be sending at least a couple teams of novices.

Caesar Rodney's coach speaking (yep, from Slower Lower Delaware), and yes almost certainly we would be interested as long as there are no scheduling conflicts. It would be nice to have a true elite Fall tournament to attend to more fuller prepare for the grind of Winter.

We're still working on finalizing the date, given other tournaments and room availablity. This tournament WILL happen, if necessary in the spring.

It looks like 11/22/08 would be the best date for us. What do people think about this?

I know a group of students from MLWGS are interested, but our budget and Dr. B.'s willingness to go to an over-nighter other than Cave Spring will be the deciding factors.
