Quizbowl Trivia Chatroom?

Post by AndyShootsAndyScores »

I've heard talk of a chat room where readers take turns asking questions on a mic and others answer. I've heard of a room like this on PalTalk, but I believe I'm thinking of a different board. Can someone enlighten me about it?

There is indeed a trivia room in Paltalk, though I haven't been there in months. Look in their chat rooms, and you will find it. It's not too bad.

As mentioned, anyone should feel free to shoot me a message anytime. Chat rooms often arise spontaneously when someone reminds me that I'm supposed to be running them.

I actually will plan to get a more organized thing going next year, perhaps primarily for top high school players/younger college players, or anyone looking to become one of those. If that sounds like your idea of a good Saturday night and you avoid the self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, let me know.

Are these AIM chat rooms or PalTalk ones that you run?

This isn't exactly the same thing, but there is an IRC bot on EsperNet that should be on 24/7 (in theory). More info here or here.
I think the PalTalk room stopped a while ago after Eric stopped coming.

Do I have to have AIM 6.1 to participate in the chat rooms, or can I still do it with 5.9?

AIM chat rooms are textual. The microphone goes down on Skype.

Folks,

It may be easier (since this is the summer) to post a schedule and any instructions on joining your chat room. It's too hard to just blitz people "immediately" sometimes.

He did not stay but still... one person saw the ad and joined so it wasn't a total failure.

There isn't really a schedule, per se. I'm generally available to host games at a wide variety of dates and times, so just IM me if you're online, have some time, and want to play. It's rare we can't get a game going.

If you're talking about the bot, it should be online 24/7 so that people can play (with others or by themselves) at anytime they want.

Assuming you're referring to #quizbowl: There is no bot, questions are read by live people when they are there, which is usually around 10 PM to 1 AM eastern. Try again later tonight.

The bot is in #scobowl, on EsperNet. You'll know you're in the right place if there's an admin (or whatever the IRC term is) called TriviaBot present.

If interest is satisfactory, I can always start up my good ol' Quiz Bowl room on Paltalk again...

It was pretty good given the mic capabilities. Moderator read the questions while players typed 'Buzz' to answer and then their answer in a considerable amount of time.

Not completely like the real thing, but you know.

What is also good, is there are scorers that can be used on Paltalk.

The old website is @ http://www.freewebs.com/qbpd

I may just have to open it then... it would be better if a few more would express interest so I can keep it open this time, lol.

If you all want me to get this started, I have to have someone help because I will be gone from the 23 until around the end of July for the KY Governor's Scholars Program.

That means I will need an admin(s) to open/close/maintain the room while I am gone.

I am willing to get it back going if a little more interest shows quickly.

Well then...

How about I launch a little orientation tomorrow at--- say around--- 1:00PM EST?

If you all get the hang of it, I'll go ahead and make a few people admins as I will be in packing-mode for a 5-week span of dorm-life for GSP.

It's a great idea for practice and is pretty fun altogether; those who frequented before liked it, and I am sure the new ones will like it, too.

http://www.paltalk.com (Go ahead and download it for tomorrow, and when you get online, message Xx_Eric_xX)

Room name will be, as it was before, 'Quiz Bowl Practice and Discussion' in the Games>>Trivia/Puzzles category. It should be on around 1-ish.

Looks as if I am gonna have to change the name a little bit...

It's claiming the room name's been taken, but it will not list the name I put the room under... oh well.

But yeah... it will be a minor edit, but you should be able to tell what room it is.

EDIT: Lots of technical difficulty, so let's do this tomorrow...

Wellll... I could try it then and later in the evening... I can't really set a time for the evening one yet, but let's say.... 10ish (EST)?

And that's if I can get the darn room re-registered. I have a feeling it's just the fact I'm using Firefox to do it, though... So I'll fix that tomorrow, lol.

Room is now set and is open.

If I have a red-dot beside of me, I'm away and you can just leave a message.

The room's under the same name it used to be: Quiz Bowl Practice and Discussion.

I will try to have us a few games going @ 10 today as a preview (or what-have-you), so hope to see a few there!

ATTENTION THOSE COMING TO THE PALTALK ROOM:

We have had several new members and admins come in today--- keep it coming!

I will be out of town, Sat-July 27, so it will be up to those admins to make new admins, maintain the room, and make room times and dates.

Hope you all have fun!

As for tomorrow, I will be on around 1pm and perhaps around 10pm EST.

Great news if you can't use PalTalk:

http://chat.paltalk.com/g2/group/100272 ... etails.wmt

You can chat via your browser in the same way you would with the program by clicking the above link. Just remember to sign up with a user name first! To chat click 'ROOM OPEN! CHAT NOW!'

Join us tonight at 10--- if I'm late, one of the other admins should open the room if possible. I am gonna be one busy man tonight.

I'm leaving in a few minutes for my Gov.'s Scholars Program camp, so will not be around to operate the room.

ADMINS: Be sure to post some time/day schedules and keep the room going in my absence. I may be able to pop in only occasionally.

They don't allow laptops, TV's, or personal DVD-players, so yeah... that bums me out, lol. I do get to use the on-site computers when I can, before curfew, though...

So yeah--- everyone have a great summer!
