I think Richard Montgomery is going to win the IHSA State Championship.
Come on, we're not that bad. Although we were talking of dropping by in West Virginia or Delaware and winning their tournament when it appeared as though Maryland wasn't going to host a state championship. But we wouldn't drive all the way to Illinois anyway.

After watching ACE, I will say that I would be surprised if Auburn does not finish first or second (the other team on team SHOULD be Wheaton North based on talent alone). Siva cruised through the science specialty tournament while John took 2nd to the very strong Pavrati from Dunbar. Michael Jiang won the Social Studies tournament and all three of them should be starting for Auburn.

While I know that this does not necessarily make a great time, I think it is a very good indicator when three players are able to handle their subject tournaments the way they did while still all staying in the top 10 scorers overall in the top practice room.

Greg will be Greg and he has a couple players to back him up as well. I forget their names off-hand but I remember there being another WN player that did very well.

Hunter played in the top room during all of the practices and did very well. By himself, though, I don't seem him being able to bring down Auburn or WN. I know absolutely nothing about his supporting cast though.

Carbondale will be pretty good. Loyola will be good behind Andrew Friedman. And of course, never count out New Trier.

Overall, next year looks like a year to get excited for quiz bowl in Illinois as the overall strength of teams looks pretty good.

Just a correction: instead of "behind," Kentb426 clearly meant "behind Joe Ahmad, as will Latin School behind". Clearly.

I think as time goes on, there will be a more steady run of good schools from the Mid West ......

I remember having this conversation with several coaches: things will change not because dedicated coaches decide to change them .... they change when a few dedicated coaches commit to changing things ...... and then have their players come back as coaches, question writers, TD's, etc .... and keep the boulder rolling. As the poorer question writers retire, they will be replaced by more and more good writers ...... to me, the most significant events in recent Illinois Scholastic Bowl are not rules changes or even winning PAC ..... its not even the overall improvement in questions or seing the success at NAQT this year ...... it is seeing people like Coach Laird coming back to coach ... seeing Coach Laudermith coming back to coach ..... people like Msrs. Angiuli and Matchen starting into question writing and recruiting people into the process .... it is seeing people like Donald Taylor and Brad Fischer getting involved in moderating and starting tournaments ..... and it is people like Michael Angelo Sorice who was out banging a drum longer than any of us. I have forgotten names, but not by intent.

I have gotten the impression that this has been more common out east for a long time ...... over the past few years it is starting to happen here, and as long as it keeps happening, things will continue to improve.

Ben Taylor of Rockford Guilford and Team Illinois '03 picked up about 25k on Jeopardy yesterday. I heard something about the show going on summer hiatus, so I think he returns in the fall.

I'm not going to lie - seeing your first two answers being "Flava Flav" and "Laguna Beach" made my day. Hooray for Jeopardy, the bastion of academic excellence.

Your score should be a good enough total to advance as a WC - 22,222 would have been 1st wild card in the first teen tournament this year. I would bet heavily that all three of you make it into the semis.

If, you know, people bet on things like quizbowl.

Coach was not happy!!!

# of times remote was thrown at TV: 6

# of times it took to break remote: 3

# of times I accidentally refered to Alex as "Chip": 1

# of times Alex had to ask Greg to stop talking: 1 (when he tried to push on at the commercial break)

# of times Coach had to ask Greg to stop talking this year 3.4 x 10^4

# of times Coach cursed pop culture as concept: 4

# of questions coach got that other players didn't: 2

# of questions the panel got that coach couldn't get: 3 (2 of which are above)

Two things: so which pieces did you throw at the tv starting on throw #4?

Also, Dave found this post more amusing because of a few glasses of wine, which makes me wonder how many glasses it takes to mistake Alex Trebek for :chip: ...

I started with the IR emitter ... but that didn't make a satisfying enough sound when it hit the screen.

none ..... it was the anger over the pop culture questions .... I know, I know, its Jeopardy!, what can I expect? But that paired with the game show atmosphere brought me back to my visit to the NAC ..... all Alex needed was his impersonation of someone smoking a cigarette and saying something to Meryl like "We don't get many girls on the show," and it was the NAC.

I ask forgiveness from Alex ....

I dunno, but Mr. Reinstein taught Da Brat of rapping/Surreal Life fame, as well as Jake Siegal, who was in the most recent American Pie movie (Naked Mile) as Cooze.

Since I know that many Illinois coaches read this board and with UIUC's early tournament already announced, what date do think would be best for Northwestern's annual Wildcat NAQT tournament? Traditionally we have held in late October, which works ok, but might there be a better time to really ratchet up attendance?

Thank you. I knew such a schedule existed, but not where to find it. It looks like we've already been penciled into an already quite full schedule. We have contacted NAQT for the set, so a formal announcement should be forthcoming.

I would love to do a middle school tournament. We still need to figure out the feasibility on our end. I still have the contact lists that you sent me a while back and will certainly be in touch if and when we can settle on hosting one.

Oh, and by the way congrats to Illinois for topping my old Missouri team at Pansonic this year. Way to go!

OK, since we are somewhat self-contained (let's face it, relatively few Illinois teams attend national tournaments), anyone want to venture a top ten for this coming year? Or is it too early? Here is mine, in no particular order:

1. Rockford Auburn
2. Wheaton North
3. Fremd
4. Stevenson
5. New Trier
6. Loyola
7. Bloomington
8. Decatur Lutheran
9. IMSA
10. Wheaton-Warrenville

It's never too early for predictions, Mr. Riley.

I agree, Auburn is a definite preseason #1. While a lot of teams have one great player and 4 "helpers", Auburn legitimately has three studs on the varsity roster this year in John, Michael, and Siva. The other nine squads will also be tough to beat as well. My sleeper pick is Homewood-Flossmoor, they had a very underrated F/S squad last year and could make noise. While MS lost some good players, it's hard for me to believe that they won't be a stellar team, especially with that stud freshman they played as an eighth grader last year. Haha. But seriously, good luck to all.

Last year, Maine South, coached by veteran cardiac-arrest-specialist/coach Tom Egan, had two All-State players (one on Team IL,) a captain in her fourth year as such, and a core of seniors that, along with a hotshot junior, formed a heckuva team.

This year, Maine South, under freshman coach Mr. Dutmers, will have that hotshot junior (should make All-State) back as a senior, but he'll be playing with last year's 1-2 from frosh-soph, the aforementioned stud freshman, and probably another senior. In other words, the top 3 scorers are going to have about 15 games experience in which any two of them have ever played together.

For us to be a "stellar team", we're gonna need some magic. Not that it can't happen... it's just gonna need some luck.

I can pretty much agree with Mr. Riley's 10 teams, though not necessarily in that order.

I really can't wait to see how New Trier turns out. Robert and Jonah can cover the science and math, Ben can handle the SS, and together they should be at least decent at lit. If they improve on lit (I was never that good at it, anyway, so it's not a big drop off), I have some hopes.

I'm also interested to see Loyola, since they return all of their starting 5, I believe.

But yeah, as for preseason #1...Auburn, for sure.

MS just needs some serious team gellage. I have yet to see it. The juniors (now seniors) kind of hang out, but they're in their own little spheres. If they can come together and get serious, they'll be great. Until then, they'll be alright.

I agree that Auburn will be hard to beat but I think that fremd is placed to high, although I don't know how they did a Ace Mayland, I do remember playing them this year and last and all they've really got right now is Their hotshot freshmen Arjun who is still IMO too young to be as dominant at varsity as he is at JV.

Age has nothing to do with ability. While this Arjun may or may not be good enough to be a great varsity player as a sophomore, I know I was good enough my sophomore year to beat most Missouri teams and to play close with some others. Also, Keith from RM definitely qualifies as a dominating sophomore last year, no?
