Ithaca Fall Tournament IX Online (11/21/20) [NAQT IS-197]

Post by mrkirkmath »

The Ithaca High School Quizbowl team will be hosting the ninth annual Ithaca Fall Tournament on Saturday, November 21, 2020. As is the case with other quizbowl tournaments this year, this tournament will be held completely online in accordance with NAQT’s Online Tournament Guide. The exact details of what platform we will use are still TBD, and will be decided based partially on team needs/preferences. We would expect all players to be online and ready to go by 8:30 for a morning informational meeting, and we plan to start the first round no later than 9:00.

Set Used
We will be using NAQT Invitational Series Packet 197, a standard-difficulty set for high school teams. Please note that this is the same set that will be used by the Greater Pennsylvania Quiz Bowl Association the prior weekend.

Registration
Complete this Google Form to register for this tournament. Schools are invited to register as many teams as they would like, but be advised that no single team’s roster may exceed six players (of whom four will be playing at any given time).

Regional Eligibility
This tournament is open only to teams in the Northeast Region of the United States. This includes Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and any team from a New England state. If teams outside this region wish to participate, please contact us (information below).

Fee Structure
The base price is $70 for the first team and $60 for each additional team. We are also offering the following discounts:
  • -$10 per staffer provided by the school (all staffers will be required to create a free account at http://www.naqt.com in order to access the online question delivery system)
  • -$20 for any new school/program (a school that has never played at either an Ithaca Fall or Spring event in the past)
The minimum fee per team is $50. Checks should be written to "Ithaca High School Brain Team" and mailed to Benjamin Kirk, 351 Spencer Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.

”On-site” Contact Information
This tournament will be directed by IHS Quizbowl team coach and adviser Benjamin Kirk. He can be reached for questions at [email protected] or contacted by phone at (607) 301-3281. An emergency cell phone contact will be provided to registered teams, or to those who request it via email.

Misconduct Information
All players, spectators, and coaches must adhere to the PACE Code of Conduct. Players, spectators, and coaches should report misconduct either directly to staff or via the misconduct form found at the bottom of the PACE Code of Conduct. Every instance of misconduct will be dealt with seriously by tournament staff. Similarly, the staff will investigate every allegation of cheating and reserves the right to report confirmed cheaters to local and national Quizbowl organizations.

Tournament Format
Games will consist of 20 tossup/bonus pairs, read in untimed matches. During play, we will use the following rules for timing:
  • After a player buzzes in, they will have 5 seconds to start their answer
  • After a tossup is completed, teams will have 5 seconds to buzz in.
  • After a bonus is completed, teams will have 8 seconds to give an answer.
The exact bracketing format used will depend on the final number of registered teams, but we expect to run a quasi-seeded round robin format in the morning, followed by a rebracketing and another round robin after lunch, with a single final match to determine tournament champion if needed.

Top finishers will qualify for the 2021 NAQT High School and/or Small School National Championships, as well as the 2021 PACE National Scholastic Championship. It is unknown exactly how these tournaments will be run, either online or in person (or at all).

Due to unexpected demand for our tournament, we've decided to limit schools to just two teams with any registered teams beyond those two added to a waitlist.

Is the new team discount $20 per team or per school?

The $20 discount is per school. It will be subtracted from the total charge when the invoice is created.

Some updates:

We have been awarded Platinum certification by PACE, and so the top 25% of teams at this tournament will qualify for their National Scholastic Championship in June (I am told they will be making an announcement about this tournament soon).

We have also reached our initial cap of 24 teams. Schools and teams are encouraged to continue to register for the tournament as we explore staffing options in order to raise the cap to allow more teams to join.

To continue to encourage a greater diversity of schools and teams participating at this tournament, the first two teams from newly registering schools will be given priority over third or fourth teams from current registrants.

Another update: We are trying to lock down a handful of additional readers that would allow us to increase our field cap to 36. If any currently registered teams can provide a reader, that would really help!

If any other member of the Quizbowl community is interested in helping read for this tournament, we are paying $20 to all independent readers/scorekeepers who help us out. Please send me an email at [email protected].

We have closed the registration process and are no longer accepting new team registrations. We have also expanded our field cap to 36, allowing entry to nearly all waitlisted teams.

Initial logistics and finalized invoices have been sent by email.

Thank you so much for playing in our tournament on Saturday. We got a lot of great feedback from players about the smoothness of the tournament, the quality of the reading, and the positive experience that was had. We hope that everyone had similarly positive experiences, though if you do have any constructive feedback for how we might improve for future tournaments, we'd love to hear it!

Thank you to all of our staffers for helping to make this tournament such a success! We had a great group of current and former IHS Quizbowl Team members, NHS student volunteers, and adult volunteers, and this tournament could not possibly have happened without their help.
I must also thank Josh Lian and Kevin Zhang of TJHSST for the electronic scoresheet system we used at this tournament, and for providing me some much needed live technical support when I really needed it. Their system is phenomenal, and I highly recommend its use at other tournaments. You can find more information about it here

Congratulations to teams Hunter A and Hunter B for both going undefeated through 10 rounds of play. They faced off against each other in the final match, and Hunter A emerged victorious with a 415-350 win.

Congratulations to all playoff bracket qualifiers, including Hunter C, High Tech A and B, Ridgewood A, Belmont A, Phillips Exeter, Livingston A, JP Stevens A, Hempfield, and Adirondack.

Finally, congratulations to Phillips Exeter's Sreesa Virinchi for earning the top prize among individual scorers, earning an average of 146 PPG during preliminary matches (and an average of 143.37 PPG over the entire event!). To all book prize awardees, please complete the Book Prize Request Form to let us know what book you'd like us to send to you!

I do not know the status of NAQT's High School National Championship Tournament, but the top 15% (i.e., 6) teams at our tournament should earn automatic qualification for that event (as well as any small schools finishing in the top 35% for SSNCT). The top 25% (i.e., 9) teams at our tournament will earn automatic qualification for the Online 2021 PACE NSC. Look for messages from NAQT and PACE about those events!

We hope to see all of you at future events! Stay safe!
