(10/10/2020) LONE STAR Northeast Kickoff

Post by Subotai the Valiant, Final Dog of War »

Hello all,
LONE STAR is pleased to announce that we will be hosting our Northeast mirror on Saturday, 10/10/2020 as the first regular high school difficulty tournament in the area! All teams from the NYC region and further northeast, as well as western New York, may play. If you are unsure of whether you are included in these regional boundaries, just sign up and we will contact you if there are any issues.

The tournament will be held online on Discord, starting at 9 AM EDT. At least 8 rounds, tossups and bonuses, are guaranteed for all teams playing. We are intending to have a 24-team field, meaning there will be 5 preliminary rounds, 3 playoff rounds, and 1 crossover round at the end to break ties.

LONE STAR is a high school regular difficulty set. More details can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=109&t=24121

Every team must be composed of players from the same school. Pricing will be $70 for the first team from each school and $65 for all following teams. Payments may be given by Paypal, Venmo, or check.

This form can be used to either register teams or to sign up for staffing the tournament: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/16yZORu ... 4-5dwh5Gsc
Staffers will be paid at least $20 for their day of work.

We are using ACF rules (linked here: https://acf-quizbowl.com/gameplay-rules/). Players will have 5 seconds at the end of a tossup to answer and 5 seconds after a buzz to answer. Due to the difficulties of conferring online, we are giving teams 8 seconds to answer on bonuses (more than the normal 5) but, to ensure that the games last a reasonable amount of time, this will be strictly enforced.

All players should follow the PACE Code of Conduct, linked here: http://www.pace-nsc.org/nsc-code-of-conduct/. Prohibited behavior will be dealt with seriously by tournament staff and can further be reported to national organizations; the form for doing so can be found with the list of prohibited behaviors in the Code of Conduct. Additionally, all players will have to type out an anti-cheating pledge during the tournament itself, and all cheating allegations will be dealt with seriously.

Is this tournament open to teams from elsewhere in New York State? If so, would you please revise "NYC region and further northeast." There are several upstate teams that may be interested in this tournament.

Ah yes. Sorry for my oversight; the rest of New York is welcome to play as well. Eastern Pennsylvania may play as well. On the other hand, western Pennsylvania will be included in the Great Lakes mirror.

Do you know what the status on the Great Lakes mirror is? I haven't seen any posts about it.

Information is forthcoming on a Great Lakes Mirror. We're still looking at local hosts and seeing whether a house-run mirror is feasible. Apologies for any delay.

Only a few spots left! The field cap is not rising until we get more mods, so get those registrations in soon!

Yes. Four players at once, and each player should have their own Discord account. I'll detail this and some other online-specific logistical things in an email soon

Thank you so much for playing the 2020 Northeast Regional Kickoff tournament, hosted by LONE STAR! We hope all teams had an enjoyable experience with both the questions and the tournament itself.

Congratulations to Hunter A for winning the tournament after winning a thrilling final 435-295 against Phillips Andover A! Congratulations to Belmont A for rounding out the podium after a win against Hunter B in the 3rd place game. Additionally, congratulations to Karsten Rynearson of Andover A, Max Brodsky of Democritus A, Lukas Koutsoukos of Wilton, Andrew Zeng of Hunter A, and Cooper Roh of Hotchkiss for being the top 5 scorers in preliminary rounds.

LONE STAR has been Platinum Certified by PACE, meaning that the top 25% of the field, or 8 finishers, have qualified for the PACE NSC.
